Say you're a gun coach, you know it, everyone knows it. Which 2007 AFL list would you want?

As a Blues fan I think we're gradually climbing up the list list ;) I think we still have 5 deadweights on our list but we are getting there.

This is what I think.
1. Hawthorn - get a 5 year contract and manage that talent. Pity I have Zac Dawson but there's always trade week.
2. St Kilda - 6 great building blocks and a few nuffies. If the nuffies can fill positions and my key players stay fit I'm guaranteed Top 4.
3. West Coast - who could fail with those 3 midfield guns? Make that 2.
4. Bulldogs - lots of promise. I trust myself as a great Coach to do it.
5. Carlton
6. Port Power - lots of good young runners coming through
7. Geelong - with Tom Hawkins anything is possible. A touch of brilliance to an even list could just be the trick.
8. Fremantle - probably should be higher but geez I hate purple.
9. Richmond - I dont mind Richmonds young players but even if I thought they were the best I still can't have them any higher. 9th suits.
10. Melbourne - a few young guns coming through but a reliance on some 28 year olds is unhealthy.
11. Kangaroos - 4-5 great kids and a bunch of tryers. Not enough.
12. Adelaide - not much youth but hey one gun Coach made nothing from something so maybe I've got them all wrong.
13. Sydney - not planning for 2009 but then I can always cry foul to the AFL for extra salary cap.
14. Brisbane - Brown and a heap of young tryers. Thats about it.
15. Essendon - too heavily reliant on this years draft to catch up with the competition. Should be rebuilding. Instead placating Sheedy.
16. Collingwood - finally seeing the light by trading Tarrant but a few years too late.

Brisbane and Melbourne up the order.
Richmond down. Kangaroos down.

If you were the world's best coach you'd want to take the worst list and prove to the world how good a coach you really were.

So in this instance you'd have to take Collingwood or Essendon... but being a Carlton man I'd shoot myself before I'd be a part of those two clubs and lead them to another flag!!

So I'll just have to take the cooshier role and coach the club with the best list!

CARLTON!

Hmmm...yeah? I was thinking in terms of the best list to make your mark on the competition. Without a list even the best Coach cant do much can he...what was that guys name who took over Fitzroy?!?

This comment is not intended to re-open the 'Can Pagan Coach' argument.

I think Pagan will be to Carlton what Walls was to Brisbane...

when Pagan passes the baton to the next coach we will be thanking him for taking the flack during our dark years and building a good list and raising our young boys to be level headed good natured individuals.

Everyone comments how well Murphy composes himself and how a lot of our youngsters are going... perhaps Pagan has proven why he's good with raising a young list.

Whomever gets our list after Pagan (unless he gets an extension after next year) will be thanking him, much like Matthews must have to Walls.

OK, think o f it differently.

If you were Kevin Sheedy on your last legs and in the last year of your contract, and you had one wish in the world, what would you wish for?

The Bulldogs list!
They really have the players that could challenge for a flag in the next couple of seasons, and could really be the next Victorian club to claim the Premiership.

Hi Blues fans, I hope I'm not out of place posting on here but it looked like an interesting thread.
IMO:
1. West Coast- Must I explain?;) Full of guns and most are quite young.
2. St Kilda - Probably should have done better with a different coach.
3. Bulldogs - Lots of youngsters starting to come of age, Vics best hope of a flag this year (possibly STK)
4. Fremantle- But you'd have to put up with Tarrent, Farmer lol. Obviously have some nutters but very solid. Pavlich doesnt hurt either. Couild be a force this year, next.
5. Carlton- You guys are coming along nicely but lacking rucks and perhaps some depth. Midfield to rival WC in a few years time.Murphy=gun, will be Judd-esque IMO. Stevens must finally step-up.
6. Hawthorn- Will be one of the powerful teams in 2-3 years, Buddy Franklin, Hodge and Mitchell all standouts with several potential young guns.
7. Geelong - Not sure but seem to have some good ones, Hawkins, Selwood.
8. Port Power - Rebuilding but IMO getting ahead of themselves, too relient on an injury-prone Tredrea.
9. Richmond - Ninth, nuff said ;)
10. Melbourne - a few young guns coming through but a reliance on some 28 year olds is unhealthy. (I know thats your post but i agree).
11. Adelaide - Some good young players coming on but realistically this year or the next is the last shot at the flag for a bit (there I said it;)).
12. Sydney- A solid list with few stars but seems to work for them.
13. Kangaroos - facing some tough times ahead, Archer is over-rated.
14. Brisbane - They've got Brown... but lacking a bit extra
15. Essendon - Rebuilding but still a way to go, too relient on too few who are getting on.
16. Collingwood - Got rid of a couple of Clokes and Tarrent but they've still got one Cloke, Davis, Holland, a Lonie, 'Presti', two Shaws and a Wakelin!!!

Cheers mate, I am torn between having a soft spot for the Blues and being annoyed by them-I work with a heap of quite cheeky Carlton supporters!
What are peoples thoughts on Josh Kennedy? Sort of the forgotten one behind Gibbs and Murphy, he'll obviously get a fair bit of game time wont he? Pre-season form hasnt been startling but I've just got a good feeling about him. Did show a bit in 2006.
Interesting Pointless 'fact'(?): My Dad taught Bryce Gibbs, I never knew him personally but from this and friends who knew him a little (different schools) I've heard he's a top bloke! (Anther plus on your list that I didnt mention, don't believe the negative propaganda from other supporters).

Collingwood: I like a challenge:D
Freo: Look set for success, and a football guru like me would take them places.
Bulldogs: Ditto, though a tall or two will help.
Carlton / Hawthorn: Good young lists going somewhere and could experience extended success in a few years time.
Saints / Geelong: With a good coach, they could prosper - though the losing culture at the club will be hard to shake.
West Coast: Would be much higher, but the fact its a drug infested hell hole comes into play.
Port / Richmond: Some good youngsters coming through and are on the rise.
Melbourne: Same as above, although probably need to get rid of and replace a couple of their more senior players who are past it .
Sydney: Disciplined team, two time Grand finalists. Probably past their prime but still some potential for success in the next couple years.
Brisbane: Some young guns and in a couple of years could be an exciting team. Though will take a while to fill the gaps left by the mass retirements over the last couple years.
Kangaroos: Some exciting players drafted this season, but really don't see much there.
Essendon / Adelaide: Both have aging lists that are gonna need a turnover - Adelaide could be decent this season but will be in trouble in a year or two.

Yeah we ar ecoming out of the woodwork as some of the lesser confident fans begin to show a little more faith in the benefits of having 5 years at or near the bottom!

Normally I hate bandwagoners but its about time we had one.

Gibbs is a future champion. We've got a whole raft of them coming. Never too late to switch teams

Richmond.. OMG there list is UNBER-talented and will win like 10 flags in a row while Terry Wallet is there and keeps signing SUPERSTAR players like 'Bling' Tambling to multi-year deals

Geelong - Obvious reasons
Carlton/Hawthorn - Good lists for 2-3 years ahead
W.C.E - Just to find out whos doing what and report back here
Bulldogs - Love the Doggies, Aker would be a good laugh
Collingwood - just to tank
Everyone else - I don't really care

I'd agree with that entirely, except I'd put the Bullies just a touch ahead of St Kilda. Particularly agree with Collingwood at 16 :thumbsu: :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

St Kilda, WCE, Dogs, Carlton and then Hawthorn because they lack tall defenders and legspeed.
If you were Kevin Sheedy on your last legs and in the last year of your contract, and you had one wish in the world, what would you wish for?
Kouta to come out of contract at the end of the year and walk into the PSD.

I think the Saints are better placed to win a flag in the next few years than the Dogs because they have genuine KPP who can win you a final if they're at full strength. The Dogs would kill for players of the calibre S.Fisher, Riewoldt, Maguire, Gehrig, Hudghton and Kosi on their list after Grant, Harris and Morris were spanked by the Eagles.

Ball, Hayes, Dal Santo, Armitage, Goddard, Gram and Montagna are quality youngsters just like Cooney, Griffin, Giansiracusa and Cross, but the end is near for Grant, West, Johnson, Darcy, Akermanis, Montgomery and Robbins who are all 30 or older. I'd rather have the younger Fergus Watts than a McDougal on my list even though both are average players.

If the Saints had a Dean Cox on their list I reckon they'd be unbeatable. The Dogs arguably have more class through the midfield, gun onballers and they do have a stack of legspeed, but a midget forwardline and run won't get them over the line in September once they get "heavy legs" after a long season. ;)

A Whitnall and Fevola would make the world of difference to the Dogs. :thumbsu:
