Why does every other club get punished because st kilda can't keep a player?
Exactly.

If there must be compensation why not exclude Round 1 picks, and commence compensation from Round 2.

Every team deserves to keep their Round 1 draft position because they're all trying to improve their squad with the best available yound talent. **** St Kilda, they now have 2 picks in the top 10 (7 & 8).

Pick 34 will turn in to pick 40 i think.
Won't be too many more compo picks you'd think. So just picks for matching f/s & academy. And those have to be paid for. So don't think it will go much further than it is now. May even come in a couple if Brisbane trade for picks in the 20s.

Pick 8 for Battle. This competition is a joke.
Ass Stain club president whinges at the AFL about father son rules at the B&F, gets rewarded with pick 8 for a schmuck defender. If Sayers whinges about something AFL related inequalities at the B&F tomorrow night, we'll probably get banned from the draft.

Mind blown at how much Hawthorn are paying Battle and how much Collingwood are paying Perryman.

Neither are close to elite. Both are getting paid similar money to Cripps.

The advantages of developing your own players from the draft. Using decent picks and getting quality, durable players, then developing them in house.

Mechanisms for acquiring players are so difficult to navigate. (You get clubs demanding multiple first rounders for 28yo (albeit quality) role players). Those who nurture their own solid citizens reap the rewards.

Having a side full of stars integral to the club’s success and a bevy of foreign legion types is not a good model. We must embrace the draft. We must develop the players we acquire through the draft, not leave them “untried” in the seconds while we play our “stars” injured and/or fatigued.

That’s the Collingwood mantra now. They hit the mark for a while but lately they’ve gone offline. They’ve lost a couple of soldiers in Murphy and Adam’s recently and it’s changed them somewhat, for the worse.

I agree. Re the Academy types, I get they invest in these kids etc etc blah blah blah. But for mine, that is the expectation of all clubs to continue to grow the game. Each club should have a high performance academy. If one of your players is ‘up there’, then you need to retain or obtain a 2nd rounder in that draft year and you only get priority access to ONE player. Clubs need to become complicit in the development of the game. Teams have to input the same system, the same investment and opportunity. I’m even an advocate of recruiting zones being bought back in. If kids want to move to a certain zone, that’s fine, they only get access to ONE player, the others are free range. The league needs to be equalised.

You also shouldn’t be allowed out of your mandatory 3 year rookie contract. Eg Horne-Francis. It’s a National competition, suck it up.

If you’re believing the media about Battle and Perrymans wage, are you believing them for Cripps and Williams?

Lots seem to believe the media when it’s not one of our own

Aren’t the NGAs already a return to recruiting zones?
I’ve been jumping on our club about this, to me it’s been neglected and not a priority.

If you fix the payment method like you touched on, why limit at just one, if you invest in a player for 8 years but don’t get access to them because you happen to have one other player eligible that year isn’t right imo, if you pay properly people won’t mind.

I find it annoying that Marshall is a Lions academy member but plays at Sandringham.

Pretty sure the $ are the main factor triggering the Compo picks for Saints & GWS, so in this case the $ for Battle & Perryman are correct otherwise 1st round picks would not have been given.

Not taking the media at their word at all.

Looking at the $$$ figures required to trigger the compensation and know Cripps took unders to re-sign.

Remember I shared the years length of his contract a good period of time before he officoally re-signed and before the media even guessed on that one (was full swing "Cripps to WA" headlines). It was relatively minor terms at that stage and all Cripps was saying to the media was "I really love the club" and "we'll sit down and get it done." He wasn't lying.

The salary cap has exploded again since and salaries across the league have shot up as a result. Coona Blues also right in the cost of doing business.

Just mind blowing how good that man has taken care of our club. We owe it to him to get him the cup.

I believe the quoted figures, just commenting that the media when Williams signed for us stated figures, but they are widely dismissed here as BS.

Lots here say Cripps took unders and I’m sure he could have got more but if you believe media he’s still on $1M plus, but that could have gone up as you say or could be a different $$$ figure every year.

Never doubted he’d stay and I think we aren’t pushing hard enough this off season or last to maximise a tilt with an exceptionally strong core

Re: Williams

Bell curve is a dramatic effect as does performance enhancing clauses in his contract.

Re: Cripps

His base salary isn't as high as the media would have you believe but is hitting his performance enhancers with regularity..

The base (guaranteed) salaries of these free agents is absurd.

Agree with you, however only problem is our mechanism for young talent development , ain’t reliable historically .
We have three areas of concern, coaching, recruiting , and player development, all critical and vital.
Can’t envision any drastic decisions taken until the Sayers & Cook administration moves on after 2025.

OP updated with today's trades (Alex Neal-Bullen, Jack Darling, Jack Graham).
