Who are the players whose dads played afl but not enough games to be father son. Let’s see how a team of them would stack up against the father sons.

The few I have heard of Noah Anderson, Shae Bolton, Alex Rance, Mitch Georgiades, Ed Allen.
 
Philippou, Sam & Ben Reid.

Also Josh Dunkley eligible to be F/S but chose not to.

Connor West ended up at 1 of his dad’s club’s - Robbie played for WCE, Footscray and Port in the SANFL. Won a Sandover Medal too.

Jeremy and Mitch McGovern’s dad was a stocky mid/back flanker - Andrew - played for Sydney and was Freo’s VC (I’m pretty sure) in their early days.

Marc Murphy similar story, though I recently watched the Andrew Dunkley Open Mike (a bit of bizarre one, whenever the conversation moved to Dunkley Sr's post-playing relationship with Sydney) and thought that it was mentioned that Sydney wasn't sufficiently interested in Josh to pursue him as a father-son recruit.

Didn't they agree not to take him before a certain pick. If he was still available after that pick there were no promises they wouldn't pick him if they thought he was best available.

Correct

Dunkley signed on as a father-son nominee just before the deadline. Swans passed him on their first round and we got him at pick 25

I only heard Dunkley Sr's views on it and he said he wasn't bitter about Josh, though he seemed plenty bitter on the Swans for other reasons, not being offered a role with the Swans after retiring being one.

A.Dunkley just seemed strangely aloof for seemingly minor reasons, he even mentioned how delighted he was that so many teammates from his last year broke through for a premiership in 2005. But not making the effort to go to the event where he was inducted to the hall of fame, things like that, just seemed weird when there really didn't seem to be a flashpoint where the relationship had broken irreparably.

In fairness, Dunkley did make mention of the toll of living in country Victoria and supporting (and driving) three children in their elite junior sporting endeavours takes a lot of sacrifice, commitment and time. I can understand that. But I'd have thought you make the effort to get to your induction to an AFL club's hall of fame... it's a big deal.

Anyway, we'll probably see a fair few similar cases in the future to Marc Murphy, where the fathers move away from their home state for their football career (well, in Murphy's case, the club moved), go home after retiring and their sons never really show an interest in being a father son, when they can stay in their home state and be drafted by a different club.

It would be very hard to split the two teams in terms of a greatest of all time f/s to players whose fathers played but weren’t eligible.

I believe the Cornes brothers were eligible to be selected under F/S - to Adelaide. And I also think James Hird was also tied to Essendon under the archaic rules of the time.

Graham needed to coach Adelaide for one more season, as were the rules/concessions of the time

I've read that Graham offered to stay on the coaching panel in some capacity after he was sacked to ensure his kids would be f/a eligible but Adelaide declined the offer - or something like that

Brisbane player Darcy Wilmot’s father played five games for Collingwood all in 1980 while aged 23. Darcy wasn’t born until 2003 and debuted in 2022. Has there ever been a bigger gap than the 42 years between these two? FWIW Gary Ablett Snr only retired in 1997 and Jnr played his first AFL game in 2002.

A couple of Cats had fathers who were AFL listed but never broke through for a senior game: Gryan Miers’s father David was with Collingwood in the 80s and IIRC Tom Atkins’s father was with Footscray.

IIRC Mitch Duncan’s dad played 200 WAFL games but his father doesn’t have the surname Duncan. Not unlike how the Guthries’ father is Andrew Merryweather who played just one game for Fitzroy in 1982 and then played five games for Essendon in 1988. Six years between senior appearances is a very rare occurrence.


Ben Dixon’s father, who recently died, played five games for Fitzroy.

Brett Deledio’s father played one game for Carlton.

Matthew and Jon McCarthy’s father IIRC played three games for Geelong.

Paul Couch’s son Tom played a handful of games for Melbourne.

Yeah, even just logically, both were first rounders in the free market*, no way would Adelaide have not picked them up if they had the access, considering how much of a bargain f/s picks were at the time.

And - assuming your version is correct - pretty noble of Adelaide to not exercise that loophole.

*edit Kane was early second round.
