I’m not sure which time period you’re referring to. I think if in the AFL era, ACL never spelt the end but it likely would have been at least a full 12 months to return at AFL level. It’s probably more the advancement in operative procedures and rehabilitation that allows the modern footballer to return relatively earlier compared with the past players. Risks of recurrence still remain high however due to the rigorous running and constant body knocks during a match.If I am not mistaken, some of the players that returned early was a result of using synthetic tissue to repair the ACL.
Correct me if I am wrong here, but there was a time when ACL meant your career was totally over. I presume over time with the advancement of medical technology, one day we may see an ACL injury being at most 3 months.
