Might see a bit of experimentation now I reckon. I can’t imagine they’d be able to keep their eyes on any chance of finals given the current injuries.

If word is on the street that Buddy is going to call it then internally they’ve hit the eject button.
I’m a bit puzzled.

Do the Swans honestly believe that anyone thinks Buddy ISN’T retiring this year?

Assuming we are without everyone that missed last week through injury, and the additional two we lost this weekend, I think we will go in something like this:

Backs - Fox, Francis, Gould, Blakey, Lloyd, Florent, Cunningham - Larkey is the ominous threat, he's a different player against us, Francis would probably get the job. Stephenson could also be dangerous so I would have Fox on him. I want Blakey and Florent to release the shackles a bit, hopefully able to do this a bit this week.

Forwards - Hayward, Heeney, Franklin, McLean, Papley, HHK, Clarke - McLean as the Full Forward for the first 6, gets a breather on the bench before his Ruck stint so he can go, then back to the goal square to the end the quarter. I want Franklin playing the Lead up role outside 50 to use his kicking abilities, with Heeney and Hall-Kahan leading at him and others. I want Papley to take a step back and start crumbing again. Clarke will obviously play a shut down role again.

Ruck - Hickey (12 on 6 off 12 on), hopefully last weeks run helped him a bit, otherwise it will be another long day against Goldstein who has pushed forward hard against us in the past. Don't think they drop him after one game and give McAndrew a run.

Mids - Parker, Rowbottom, Sheldrick, Gulden, McInerney, Warner, Campbell - I would have Parker, Rowbottom, Sheldrick and Warner doing the CBAs, with Campbell, McInerney and Gulden patrolling the wings.

With all the injuries I won't be surprised if all the youngsters who are coming in step up for just this one game now that they might be excited to play their new roles if it happens. Maybe they rally behind Mills their captain being out for an extended period.

However the fire won't always be there and we will crash back to earth 3 games later

I doubt it, I just think they’ll bring the official announcement forward now.
There's only 7 SCG games left this year (+ 1 out at Blacktown), so the opportunity to milk Buddy nostalgia for gate receipts is drying up.

Blues
Saints
Eagles
Cats
Bulldogs
Suns
Demons (last game of H&A)

You'd think they'd look to sell out at least the Cats, Bulldogs and Demons games. Will be tough though given the swannies will probably in the 12-15 ladder range by that pointy end of the year.

Wonder if he'll get a final crack at Steven May in his last game. Could be fun knowing there's no consequence on a suspension.

If we play Gus in the centre and North smoke him do we still blame Horse?

We keep him there and give him a month in his position. If after that he's not good enough so be it least we know.

surely Horse already has a good idea how good he would be? The guy sees him play in the VFL week in week out and sees him train every day. I don't see why Horse needs to try him a month in the middle before knowing how he would perform.

Gus would be practicing against Parker, Gulden and Stephens at training.

Knows how good he is...yet plays him at small forward when he's never been one...Horse is a massive problem here, despite what many think he's done this over and over again playing blokes out of position. It took how long for Mills to play in the middle again?

Don't care what he's doing at training, we can't keep the bloke on the list for training drills. We are at best going to come 12th, how about we use these games to find out about these players at the top level. Parker can play predominately forward, would give him a break. Release Rowbottom (into Parker's role) and put Shedrick in the middle somewhere.

Horse has a rubbish record in identifying talent

Sometimes players come in to the team to simply fill a role that needs filling. Sometimes that role won't be the one that's best suited for them. Sometimes it will simply be the role that's left over for them once the other 21 players have been put into the positions that make us strongest as a team.

It's not realistic to shift solid, best 18 players into positions they're not used to, simply to accommodate a fringe player coming in to a do a temporary role.

And if a fringe player is good enough, they'll often do well, even in a role that's not suited to them, and from there be given bigger responsibilities and played in a more important position.

Does this mean Horse doesn't screw up with where he chooses to play certain players? Not at all. But it's got to be about the team performance first and foremost, even if that's at the expense of a particular players development.

This is my concern. It is only natural that Gus practises week in and week out against Parker, Mills, Rowbottom, etc in training drills as well as match sims. If he is continually being beaten in the contests by these guys then that is what Horse and the MC is seeing. It is one thing to amass possessions against VFL sides (albeit, it is a GREAT thing) but the coaches are aware of exactly how he performs against an experienced mid group, which MAY be why we are seeing him rewarded for his performance by selection, but not given the midfield role.

If they aren’t playing a position they are playing in reserves then don’t play them it’s pretty simple. If I see Sheldrick come in and play small forward again and then gets subbed out because he ain’t a small forward well frankly Horse can sub himself out. Henie a midfielder ply him there it’s very very simple…and it’s not as if Parker hasn’t played forward and been good at it may I add.

Was a bloke called Tom Mitchell that did that too and a certain coach refused to play him that said player went on to win a Brownlow and is plying for the title favourites this year. Give them a go especially this week against sides like North. Not as if the normal mids have been great this year

I’d agree EXCEPT:

(a) the blokes Sheldrick is beating in the VFL are no mugs. Marty Hore, for example is a hardened AFL experienced mid. He’s not up against kids.

(b) Horse has form. Tom Mitchell was much maligned here - but for a long time, in Horse’s view, he wasn’t up to a place in our midfield. Not suggesting Gus is Tom Mitchell - but Horse can be pretty stubborn when it comes to looking beyond his favourites.

A reason Nic Newman left

Refused to play him?
19 games in 2015 followed by 26 games in 2016 say otherwise.

And no doubt Tom has become a better player for not having been gifted a spot.

I agree with (a) but not (b). When picked in the seniors, Mitchell was not played out of position as we claim that Sheldrick is. He was played in the mids but kept getting dropped back to work on his two-way running, which is quite different.
