The AFL today announced the 2014 International Cup will be held in Melbourne from Saturday August 9 to Saturday August 23, 2014.

The fifth International Cup carnival will include two AFL curtain-raiser matches, matches played at AFL and VFL venues, a men’s and women’s competition, a standalone AFL 9s fixture and matches linked with community football leagues.

AFL International Development Manager Tony Woods said the aim was to make IC14 the biggest International Cup to date.

we're going to run a series of interviews with various overseas leagues over the offseason this year. If you run or are heavily involved in an overseas Australian rules competition, drop me a pm or email me at jmlassey@gmail.com. The first interview with ARFLI President Kian Quigley will be up shortly.

Do you think they will be any chance of allowing AFL players with foreign backgrounds represent their home nation in the 2014 International Cup. It would definitely increase the standard of the competition which is a good thing.

For example, Mike Pyke (Canada), Nic Nat (Fiji), Karmichael Hunt (NZ), as well as the various other Irish/American/New Zealander senior/rookie players on the lists of a number of AFL clubs.

None, firstly, risking potentially important players for a comp of no significance to AFL level footballers, clubs will not let it happen. Second, this is a comp primarily designed to let different foreign leagues compare themselves to other leagues, and give their domestic players something to aspire to.

Having Mike Pike taking ruck knocks for Canada says nothing about the state of Aussie rules in Canada, and deprives a Canadian player of a spot. Players want to play with the players they play with and against at home, not blow ins they have never seen before. On that basis, even letting Irish players knocking about in Aussie amateur leagues play for Ireland is a bit questionable.

The only exception I could consider is if an AFL recruit learned the game in, and was recruited from a foreign league.

Actually agree with your post, however the new Irish draftee Flynn (?), played in the local Irish AFL league, and Richmonds PNG recruit learnt his football in PNG with a local side. ( Gideon Simon), and one of the American boys drafted also played local football in the good old USA.

A couple of years ago, it was considered a unlikely dream by passionate supporters of football O/S that a player would ever be drafted out of a O/S league, it seems to be, becoming quite the norm now.

Off topic, but i am suprised that more South Afrcian boys have not been drafted

I do not think of any of these as being the sort of player I meant, although Gideon Smith comes close. Most of these played overseas to try and get a little experience before coming to the AFL. None of them were selected for the AFL based on footballing ability shown in those leagues, they were selected for athleticism, and used the overseas leagues to get a headstart on their development. Gideon is the exception, but even he did a lot of his development here.

They player I am thinking of is a player who is selected on footballing ability shown in an overseas league. None of the leagues are good enough yet, but some are getting closer and I think it can happen.

Bang discovered the sport two years ago during a trip to Australia and plies his trade with the Aalborg Kangaroos and Danish Vikings.

Considered the leading player in last year's Euro Cup, Bang will also play in the NEAFL with the UWS Giants.
