Bluejay, do you think the Catalans and the Madrid competitions will get together to put a team in the 2008 IC?
I very much doubt so, for many reasons:
I guess you already know about the political issues that coexist all around Europe in most countries and regions. Catalonia, and thus Spain, are no different.
Our Catalan government helps us paying all the travel expenses whenever we play as Catalonia and recognizes us and our sport as official. The Spanish authorities for Sport said 2 years ago that aussie rules was nothing and obviously they don't help with money. So the Madrid Bears have to pay all the expenses themselves and we don't. The thing is that if we go under the name of Spain, we're in the same position than the Madrid Bears. They are mostly expats, and they have better prices for plane tickets to travel back to Australia. Here in the LFAC there is no aussie at all and we don't have as much money as some people of the madrid Bears, so we're happy to know our government helps us while we representate Catalonia internationally.
LFAC relationship with Jeff Callow and the Madrid Bears deteriorated a lot since the last IC, when they traveled to Australia without even telling then Belfry Valls founder and now LFAC president Pedro Moliner, and opting to ignore us completely.
On a personal note, and it is just my opinion and not that of other members of the LFAC, I would never ever play for Spain. My Identity Card might say I am Spanish, but I do not feel Spanish at all. I never go for Spain in any of the team sports nor do I cheer for Spanish players in individual sports. I am Catalan and always will be, and would play with any other country but Spain.
I hope this clarifies our position about 2008 IC and the possibilities of going to Australia in 2008. We hope the AFL change and the IC organisation their mind about letting nations participate, but as it is right now, I guess we won't be able to make it.
