At a theatre in Los Angeles last month, Hollywood A-listers George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Barbara Streisand took the stage in a public show of support for Joe Biden.
Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel interviewed the president and his former boss, Barack Obama, as a crowd of supporters watched on.
It was a fundraising success, reportedly bringing in a record $US30 million ($44 million) for the Biden campaign.

But just a few weeks after the event took place, Clooney has called on the president to withdraw from November's election.
"It's devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe "big F-ing deal" Biden of 2010," the actor wrote in the New York Times.
"He wasn't even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate."
Biden has remained defiant in the wake of his disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump, insisting it was a "bad night" but that he's still the best person for the job.
And he may well dismiss Clooney as one of the "elites" that he's accused of trying to push him out of the race.
(Asked for comment on the Clooney piece, the White House referred reporters to the letter the president sent congressional Democrats earlier this week, urging them to unite behind him.)
But the actor's high-profile intervention is deeply damaging on several fronts.
Clooney is one of the relatively small group of people who can speak first-hand about a recent personal interaction with Biden.
And as a lifelong Democrat who "loves" Biden, he argues the party is "so terrified by the prospect of a second Trump term that we've opted to ignore every warning sign".

The Hollywood actor George Clooney, one of the Democratic party’s biggest fundraisers, has called on Joe Biden to step aside to save democracy from Donald Trump.
In an opinion article in the New York Times, Clooney expressed deep affection for the US president but said that personal interaction with him at a recent fundraising event in Los Angeles – the Democratic party’s most successful ever, raising more than $30m – suggested that the stumbling performance in last month’s debate in Atlanta was not an aberration.
“It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe ‘big F-ing deal’ Biden of 2010,” the actor and longtime Democratic party member and fundraiser wrote.

“He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate.
“Was he tired? Yes. A cold? Maybe. But our party leaders need to stop telling us that 51 million people didn’t see what we just saw,” he said, referring to explanations from the White House and Biden himself for his bad debate performance.
More bluntly, he said explicitly that Biden could not prevail in an electoral rematch with Trump: “We are not going to win with this president.”
Stressing that his call was made reluctantly, Clooney paid tribute to the political battles that Biden had won throughout his career but said his age represented an insurmountable adversary.
“But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time. None of us can,” he wrote.
Clooney’s plea came as Biden continues to insist on staying in the race while senior Democrats agonise about how to apply pressure on him to change his mind, and serious questions continue over Biden’s health and viability for re-election.
The actor called on leading party figures to come off the fence and make the case to Biden, while dismissing as “disingenuous” the president’s argument – stated in a letter to Democrats in Congress this week – that the party’s membership had already chosen the nominee in the primaries.
‘Most of our members of Congress are opting to wait and see if the dam breaks,” he wrote in remarks clearly critical of continuing inaction. “But the dam has broken. We can put our heads in the sand and pray for a miracle in November, or we can speak the truth.”

So lets just do a hypothetical - lets say the Democrats put up a younger candidate who isn’t radical and seems to be reasonably well balanced, would you prefer them or Trump?

Voter ID is so reasonable. Photo ID is required for almost every function of society, including opening a bank account or flying on the airplane.

If it's on the books why not strengthen the law.
The bill would aim to close any loopholes that allow people to register to vote without proof of US citizenship or photo ID, require all 50 states to remove any unlawful immigrants from their voter rolls, add penalties of up to five years in prison for election officials who register non-citizens to vote and require proof of citizenship for those who vote overseas.
