Re: South African Rugby League Provincial competition

High scoring matches but good to see the massive amount of enthusiasm. I really think rugby league has massive potential in South Africa. They are a nation that could benefit greatly (more then most other up-an-coming nations) from financial assistance from NRL and ESL clubs.

Russians invite PNG to Victory 7's

RUSSIA’s National Rugby League Association has extended an invitation to Papua New Guinea to take part in its Victory 7s tournament next year.
This follows after the recent Under-16 Youth World Cup in Moscow where our schoolboys stunned the local community with with an attractive brand of football.
The Russia NRLA approached the International Rugby League Development Centre in Sydney, Australia and requested that PNG to be included in the Victory 7s tournament.
IRL development co-ordinator Tas Baitieri excitedly welcome the request and will be talking to the PNG Rugby Football League when he returns to Australia from the European Cup tournament which is currently under way in France.
Baitieri last week said: “I am in full support of this invitation and will be taking it up to PNGRFL chairman Sir Bob Sinclair to see if your senior team can attend this tournament.”
Russia’s recently introduced annual “Victory 7s tournament” falls on May 9.
The tournament commemorates the victory of the Russians in 1945. It is understood that rugby league playing nations in Europe and Australia have also being invited.

The georgian "haka"

http://www.rlef.eu.com/newsstory.php?id=104

Georgian war dance is called "Perxuli", which means Footwork. It originated in
January 2005 and the idea came from Georgian National Ballet leader and
choreographer Iliko Sukhishvili.

"Sukhishvilis" have been the leading group in Georgian dance for over 6 decades.
They have been some of the best ambassadors for Georgian Art and Culture
worldwide, with their outstanding performances.

Historically many countries tried to defeat and conquer Georgian soil but Georgian
warriors were famous for fierce battles, and great courage. During the wars,
Georgians performed a "Khorumi" dance to lift up the spirits and
Celebrate victories.

After Iliko approached unsuccessfully Georgian Rugby Union,
Nodar Andguladze- Chairman of Georgian Rugby 13 Federation,
Giorgi Asatiani- Vice Chairman and Rati Amaglobeli, young poet
well known for his patriotic verses, shown interest in promoting
ancestral traditions with the rise of Rugby League in the Caucasus in 2004.

The idea was supported and approved by Samoan born Richard Ale,
who is working in Tbilisi and volunteered to coach Georgia.

From now on, any team that will play Georgia will have to face the fierce
Perxuli “Haka”, which was performed for the First time on 29th July 2005,
when Georgia defeated Holland 34-14.

The text for the war dance is as follows:
13 kartveli! 13 Georgians!
13 vajkaci! 13 bravehearts!
13 mebrzoli! 13 Warriors!
dges gicvevt brzolashi, we challenge you,
brzolashi gicvevt! we challenge you!
Cameti Kartveli mebrzoli dges 13 georgian warriors today
gicvevt brzolashi, we challenge you,
brzolashi gicvevt! we challenge you!
Chven vdgavart ertad, We stand together
da vambobt erts: And say the same:
gulebi brzolis Our Hearts are pounding
ckurvilit gvicems! with the hunger of battle!
Mxari mxars mivcet we give shoulder to shoulder
Da xeli xels! arm to arm !Mxari mxars mivcet shoulder to shoulderDa xeli xels ! arm to arm !

This ritual will add an extra flavour for the spectators and playersand will be aimed to lift up the spirits of the Georgian players and intimidate the opposition.
Russia and France will experience this no later than this Month

Re: Russians invite PNG to Victory 7's

This is what we have to look forward to in 2008 for the World Cup.

The flamboyance of the Papua New Guineans ad South Africa.

The power of Tonga and Samoa.

The skill of Fiji and France.

The professionalism of New Zealand, England and Australia.

The size and passion of Russia.

The unknown of Georgia and Serbia

The unpredictable Italians.

The arrogant but under-skilled Yanks

the list goes on.........

I think the Windies flogged them.

This is where we could have an outstanding World Club Challenge.

Include the top domestic teams from South Africa, Jamaica, Estonia, Russia, Italy, Cook Islands, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji etc

They can play in a qualifying tournament to see who joins the top NZ domestic team, the top NL2 team in England and the top Country team in Australia.

Food for thought anyway.

Good on the Russians for being forward thinking instead of waiting for countries to ask if they can play.

Good to see 8,000 ppl playing the game over there aswell :thumbsu:
It'd be atleast 8,000. There would be 8,000 juniors.

Re: Russians invite PNG to Victory 7's

Thats what i thought, but it's hard to get any decent info about Russia, I did see an article at LU the other day, i think it was the 1 you posted, must have had a bit more on the end of it, it did say men and women though, so maybe that was without the kids

Sounds good, like a mini Challenge cup for new club teams until they are strong enough to have a crack at the proper CC.

Wales open championships with victory
Sun Oct 16, 3:24pm (Wales)
Written by: Ian Golden
WALES 22 SCOTLAND 14
By Ian Golden at Brewery Field, Bridgend.

In a closely fought encounter at the Brewery Field, Bridgend, Wales narrowly overcame a strong Scotland side.

Wales had never beaten Scotland at senior level before this match and it was poor kicking that almost cost them a win this time, failing to convert any of their five tries.

Although the crowd was officially registered at 11,176, it looked a lot more and the good old fashioned, “arrive at the last minute” rugby league tradition arrived in South Wales threatening to delay kick-off as there were still lengthy queues at the box-office as the teams walked out.

Wales controlled the opening passage of the game. Sheffield’s Aled James could have been the first to score but knocked on following an excellent move involving Anthony Blackwood, Phil Joseph and Richard Johnson.

The Dragons’ pressure finally paid off in the tenth minute. Wales skipper, Lee Briers saw the space and kicked accurately over the Scotland defence. The kick was latched on by Bryn Powell who easily ran the ball over the line.

Wales could have increased their lead just three minutes later. Briers was tackled metres short of the line and from the resulting play-the-ball, Manly’s Mark Lennon knocked-on.

Briers and Powell repeated their earlier feat in the 19th minute, Powell catching a trickier kick and grounding in the corner to make the score 8-0.

Scotland got on the board on the 24th minute from their first real attack. Iain Marsh was tackled following a 40-metre run from the Batley second-row forward. From the resulting play-the-ball, Hull FC’s Danny Brough broke free of the defence to ground under the sticks. Gareth Morton converted.

The try inspired the Scots and it was only down to a solid Welsh defence that they failed to get another point on the board before half-time. Ben Fisher came close but his attempted lay-off to Brough was picked up by Damien Gibson. Brough came close to creating a chance himself but there was no-one in the box able to catch his speculative grubber kick.

Scotland started the brighter in the second-half and were unlucky not to score after three minutes, Damien Gibson tackling his opposing full-back, Wade Liddell following a 60-metre run from the Gateshead star.

However a Gareth Morton penalty kick just two minutes later opened the Scots’ second half account and levelled the scores.

Scotland kept up the pressure but against the run of play, Wales regained the lead on 55 minutes. Adam Hughes, who had only passed a fitness test on his hand that morning enabling him to play in this tie, intercepted a Danny Brough kick on the fifth tackle and ran 90 metres to ground. Lennon missed the conversion leaving the score at 12-8 to Wales.

Jordan James, who had helped Castleford to promotion back to Super League the previous week, was next on the board for Wales, forcing the ball over the line despite Wade Liddell clinging on tight to him as he dived for the whitewash. Once again, Lennon missed the kick.

Danny Brough got his and Scotland’s second try of the game from their first attack following the restart, grounding in the corner. Morton was once again successful with the tricky conversion and despite having half the amount of tries on the board than the Welsh, Scotland were just two points behind.

Wales finally did kick a successful goal as Lennon put over a penalty with ten minutes to go.

Gareth Morton, who had kicked so well during the game, thought he had scored the winning try with just three minutes left on the clock, but his 60-metre break to the try-line was halted by the touch-judge, who had run on the pitch to point out an infringement to referee Thierry Albert.

But it was Wales who wrapped up a hard-fought win as Lee Briers ran over to score in the last second of the match, giving the Dragons their first senior win in two years.

“The spirit of the side has been second to none this week,” said Briers. “We’ve only been together for a few days making this win all the more remarkable. We lapsed in concentration at times but got back into it when it counted.

“I think we’re good enough to win this competition. We’re now looking forward to getting stuck into Ireland in two weeks time.”

Scotland coach, Steve McCormack was obviously disappointed by the outcome of the match.

“I think it was a very even match and we can consider ourselves unlucky as they scored tries from two kicks and an interception. However, we lacked composure in final third which is what cost us.

“I’m disappointed by the decision by the touch-judge near the end but we’ve got take it on the chin and work hard and get ready for the Ireland game next week. We’ve got a real hard working proud bunch of players and coaching staff and I can’t knock the players’ efforts. We’ve got to win next week against Ireland to stay in it – that’s our only goal now.”

Rugby League officially touched down in Malta last Friday afternoon at Luqa Airport(Malta) where the 17-man Maltese squad arrived accompanied by coaching and support staff numbering 40.

Greeted by photographers from national Maltese media, the squad have since resided at Sliema where they have been joined by the England Lionhearts national team squad on Monday morning.

INTERNATIONAL RUGBY LEAGUE SHOWDOWN LIVE ON MĀORI TELEVISION

Māori Television will cement its place in broadcasting history when NZ MĀORI VS COOK ISLANDS RUGBY LEAGUE action goes live to air both in New Zealand and the South Pacific this Sunday October 16 from 2.00 PM to 4.00 PM.

The final game in the channel’s English language cover age of three tests will be presented from Hastings by former Kiwi rugby league captain Richie Barnett, television and radio broadcaster Dale Husband, and Māori Television’s own sports reporter Te Arahi Maipi.

The first and final fixtures are broadcast live to the Cook Islands – the first time the tiny Pacific nation has televised a live international sporting event featuring a Cook Islands side.

The opening game in Tokoroa last Saturday (October 8) was a thrilling tie (26-26) between the NZ Māori side coached by former Kiwi Tawera Nikau and the Cook Islands team led by Kevin Iro. The second game in Gisborne on Wednesday (October 12) was a convincing win for NZ Māori (30-14) which means the Cook Islands must take out this Sunday’s game to draw the series.

Māori Television’s coverage is supported by the Cook Islands Tourism Corporation which is campaigning to build greater awareness of the destination through sports tourism. The corporation’s chief executive, Chris Wong, says the test series has drawn much interest from league fans both in New Zealand and at home.

“We are proud to be associated with rugby league and Māori Television in this initiative which will help raise the profile of Cook Islanders in sport and further build awareness of our country as a tourism destination,” Mr Wong says. “It’s also pleasing to have Kevin Iro give his skills and talent back to the game and to see him lead the Cook Islands campaign against his ex-team mate Tawera Nikau.”

The Cook Islands’ national rugby league team has been playing internationally since 1988 when they were defeated by the NZ Māori team 70 -10. The teams met each other six more times on the field with the Cook Islanders beating the NZ Māori team twice.

Commentators Richie Barnett and Dale Husband say both teams are evenly matched with players from New Zealand, Australia and England turning out for their respective sides at short notice.

“It is cultural pride at stake so every hit counts,” Dale Husband says. “The Cook Islands were riding high after the first game but are now feeling quite dejected so they’re sure to come out firing this Sunday. I don’t want to call who’s going to win so all I can say is – it’s going to be going on!”

Join the action on Māori Television with the final game in the NZ MĀORI VS COOK ISLANDS RUGBY LEAGUE test series from Nelson Park in Hastings this Sunday October 16 from 2.00 PM to 4.00 PM.
