Interstate supporters in Melbourne

I noticed that 11 of the 17 sentences in the OP start with the word 'I' and 3 of the 4 paragraphs start with the word 'I'. I thought that was interesting. I would like to know what others think about this. I.

Thoughts?

Discuss?

Given I was describing an event I was at, I think I didn't overuse the singular pronoun 'I'.

Thats got more to do with the fact that subi is 90% member filled..If there were more public GA tickets available more opposition supporters would be present.

That could be one factor, I still get the feeling the amount of supporter for interstate clubs isn't as great here. Maybe it might have to do with demographics, interstate migration patterns. Majority of West Australians in Melbourne support Eagles or Dockers, while Vics in WA are split between many clubs.

Was a massive eagles crowd until the start of the last 1/4 when they all walked out. Classic eagles. Lol.
Thought they must have gone home. They were all milling outside the g waiting for their collingwood mates.

I didn't see many Eagles fans leaving at the start of the last quarter. I thought we were at least theoretically in it for much of the quarter. I admit I walked out with about 3 minutes to go, partly throwing in the towel, partly frustration, and partly to beat the crowds, which didn't work anyway. I did see as many Pies fans already walking out too, probably more to try to beat the crowds.

The swans have the largest following in melb by far compared to other teams, we have nearly 15k members who are solely based in victoria, Adelaide always pull well here an I'd say West coast are third in line

Call me amazed! A club that relocated from Victoria, has the largest interstate following in Victoria.

I live in Melb and go to a few neutral games. WCE are easily the best supported interstate side, no idea if they are ex-pats that now live here or they travel but either way its a great effort. Both Adelaide teams also seem to get good support too.

So it isn't just me...I've spoken to a number of other Eagles supporters here (who've moved from Perth), it is something that has struck has since moving here. Much more than expected.

Presume that (the overuse in the above reply) was deliberate. You'd hope it was, anyway. Still, only your first paragraph was really describing the event. Paragraph three in particular really reads like a 5 year old's journal entry.

Off topic, but overheard a fan at the swans training session on saturday morning that she hasnt missed a game in two years... what would the likely expenditure be like on that given the amount of flights and accommodation required

If you only take the last game the 8 non-vic teams have palyed the 10 vic teams into account IN VICTORIA, the crowds are.

1. Sydney - 37,085
2. West Coast - 30,390
3. Adelaide - 29,350
4. Brisbane - 29,115
5. Fremantle - 27,956
6. Gold Coast - 25,841
7. Port Adelaide - 24,247
8. Greater Western Sydney - 23,180

I was at the Collingwood vs West Coast game, and anyone else who went, couldn't help but notice that, as is usual nowadays here, the sheer number of Eagles fans. I would estimate it myself at at least 30% judging from what I saw in the crowd, and the general noise they made. I was near the boundary line in one of the M-sections and in the general vicinity it seemed close to 50% Eagles fans. Overheard the bloke next to me saying 'seems to be more Eagles fans'.
OK
While it was still a Collingwood home game with more Pies fans, I was quite struck by how much support the Eagles seem to get in Melbourne. It doesn't seem to translate quite as much on television, but you can still tell. The audible cheers when we're doing well, the boos of Collingwood players lining up etc.
OK
I haven't seen many games involving interstate clubs and Melbourne clubs here. I remember an Adelaide game, but their presence didn't seem as large. I know there are many Sydney Swans and Brisbane Lions supporters who used to go for South Melbourne and Fitzroy, but I don't know how their numbers stack us vs the Eagles. I don't think the Dockers or Port really stack up...as for the GC and GWS, should be fairly obvious. I did, however, see an old Asian man here in Footscray wearing a Giants jacket, dunno how much of a serious supporter he was. One of the few sightings lol.
... and?
I mean, there are a lot of interstate migrants from the West (I overheard the same WC fan say he is now living in Perth, which is the case for most Eagles supporters here), and WA is the second most populous of the AFL dominated states. I'd still imagine quite a few from SA. It definitely seems a lot more lop-sided compared to interstate supporters at matches at Subiaco, where it's at least 90% Eagles (or Dockers). I remember a prelim against Adelaide where I could count the number of visible Crows fans (wearing the gear) on one hand. And this was a major final.
Cool story bro :thumbsu:

What is the point of this thread? Is it just the ramblings of a madman?

Based in Adelaide I followed Port around the country in 2011. Cost approx $4,000* having booked all flights and accommodation late 2010 (or whenever the fixture came out but from memory that's right).
A terrible, terrible year to have done this with only 3 eventual wins, and only one of those on the road. But mid 2010 we'd given Choco the boot and caretaker coach and club hero Matty Primus had won the majority of the remaining games so I'd been full of optimism. Could go on for ages about what I learnt and enjoyed even during that.
One important thing was don't be a Richard Cranium, don't go for the absolute cheapest option with long waits between planes, awful fly out/fly in times and so on. If you're 20 OK, but I remember the Boer War.

* Edit - almost half of that were the Perth and Darwin trips.

I would argue Brisbane has good support down here as well with their old links to Fitzroy.

You mean like all the freo fans that left early during Pavs 350th....doubt they'ed have milled around out front though, more than likely would go hang in a mall or under a bridge somewhere.

The Eagles and Crows benefit from not only the fact people in those states move to Melbourne a lot, but that they have so many old supporters. Plenty of retirees with money and boredom plan a few days away around a trip to Melbourne.

SA fans, especially ones outside of the city, have it easy too. Plan a few weeks ahead and you spend an hour on the plane and could probably spend $400 including flights, hotels, tickets, meals out and a few beers. Makes a difference.

This is so true for that Adelaide demographic, the well off retiree, the brown chord and tartan golf hat type, who'll plan a weekend that encompasses a Crows game, a musical and catching up for dinner with that lovely couple from Sandringham we met on that European river boat cruise in 2013.
