Tracey Holmes is a respected journalist?

That article was absolute garbage.

She claims it "wouldn't be too hard to mount a case that it was in the interests of the athletes health that the IV treatments took place".

Well yes Tracey, a medical condition is the only out for that particular breach, but I think it will be a little difficult to convince many that Alzheimer's and morbid obesity are running rampant down at bomber land. Maybe from one dodgey South Yarra md, but that's about it.

Just wanted to post this quote from Rupert Murdoch who owns News Corp which owns Herald Sun and Fox News regarding the phone hacking scandal he went through.

He told a committee of MPs investigating phone hacking: "I do not accept ultimate responsibility. I hold responsible the people that I trusted to run it and the people they trusted."

Funny how his newspapers are asking for a different standard be set on James Hird.

Agreed. She sets the tone of the article with 2 unsupported opinions and Belongs on the Sensational Media Reporting thread.

Amid the mass hysteria over drugs in sport, Essendon coach James Hird is next in line in what can only be described as a witch hunt,

Her inference that it is the games duty of care for players to take PEDs/supplements to help them recover and the AFL could be subject to lawsuits as a result of head injuries like the NFL that is most misguided.

She has a perfectly reasonable view that there is no proof that Hird has done nothing wrong and therefore he should not stand down, but I think she would have been best served by leaving it there.

When she references Hird's past achievements and states she hopes they have " given him the strength required to face up to this latest challenge" and offers her view that "When one of the greats of the game is advised by the sport's supremo that he should consider standing down it is a call to arms" IMO she sounds more a Hird 'fangirl' and less like a journalist offering a considered opinion.

Hence my question.

Wow...you are crazy. There is Mass Hysteria and it is a witch hunt. Journalists and the man who runs the AFL are asking someone to step down based on rumor, spin and innuendo...that is a witch hunt.

What she is doing is providing context. The mainstream media has done a great job demonizing the term supplements so every-time it is brought up there is a negative connotation associated with those terms by the public. They use terms like concoction and pig brain extract to further this negative perception when as the article I posted shows, all medicine, drugs and supplements come from the same place.

Stopping players from using supplements entirely for recover is a Duty of Care issue. Making that claim is not saying every supplement should be legal for this purpose. Are PED's for recovery something that should be illegal? I mean, why can a player who can't play through pain be able to get a pain injection? Why can Max Rooke be able to get calf blood injected to help with his injury problems?

Unfortunately this Country is flooded with people who think like you. You have Hird guilty in your mind...the media did their job perfectly.

Either Dank or Hird is lying so audaciously as to be unbelievable. Being privy to more evidence than any of us, Demetriou seems to believe Dank, or at least the Dank version.

Hird is staking everything on the reputation card. He's going to make them call him a liar.

Isn't he also a mate of Evans?

Essendon is at the centre of the drugs-in-sport controversy, with the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority investigating the club over concerns its players may have been administered or injected performance-enhancing or illegal drugs as part of its controversial conditioning program during the 2012 season.
There have been worries raised about Switkowski’s independence given he is an acquaintance of Evans having sat on the Healthscope board with him between 2007 and 2009 before it was delisted from the Australian Securities Exchange. The former Telstra boss is also an Essendon supporter.
However, Evans told The Australian Financial Review that Essendon members deserved an independent inquiry into what had happened at the club and that Switkowski was an ideal choice to lead it.
“Ziggy Switkowski is a person of the highest integrity and experience in governance and administration,” he said. “Nobody who knows Ziggy would entertain the thought that the review will be anything other than extremely thorough and independent.”
Switkowski, formerly the chief executive of Telstra and now chairman of Suncorp Group, said he believed there was no conflict with his appointment.
“I do cross paths with David from time to time, and yes, I am an Essendon fan. But I have absolutely no concerns that any conflict, should it ever arise, would prevent me from doing my job.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou launched a strong defence of Evans and Switkowski, saying the appointment of the latter to the review was a prudent choice by the Essendon board.
“David Evans is a fine and well-respected person, with the highest integrity,” he said. “Ziggy Switkowski is a highly respected person from the corporate sector and I think he is an excellent choice. David has kept in constant touch with the AFL about the people he was talking to [about the review] and we are happy with his choice.”

Frome The Australian

The review will be conducted by former Telstra chief executive and Essendon supporter Ziggy Switkowski,

to borrow from sir humphrey from yes minister, you only have an inquiry if you know what the answer is going to be. But I'm not cynical :D

One would hope so. There is nothing wrong with engaging a supporter of the club to run their own internal investigation. In fact Essendon would be mad to use anyone other than a friend or someone they trust implicitly. It's is their own investigation to identify areas and protocols that need to be rectified. They want someone who has the club's best interest at heart and they don't want their dirty laundry aired. I can't fault them here and I would expect my club to do the same.

Completely irrelevant as Hird has said that the responsibility lies with him.

Not a very bright post from someone calling others not very bright. :D

Did I read somewhere that Essendon also have someone else doing an investigation?

As the multiple investigations continue into the contentious supplement program, it can be revealed the Bombers in February employed criminal lawyer Tony Hargreaves to conduct a separate investigation to the one currently being done by Ziggy Switkowski.

I haven't seen any details as to the scope/purpose of his investigation.

It has also been reported that Hargreaves is currently acting for Essendon with regards to the ASADA investigation.
