I can't seem to make up my mind on an whether to get the new Ipad or not.

Background:

I've got an Iphone 4s and a 15 inch Macbook pro, I travel a fair bit but am perfectly happy watching movies on my Iphone while travelling on short trips and don't mind carrying around my Macbook on the bigger trips.

I've recently found myself with some spare cash so cost wise its not really an issue, I'm struggling to decide whether I'll get much use out of my Ipad when I'm not travelling or if it'll be that much better than just having an iphone.

Can those who have had any of the Ipad's give me a run down on how much they actually use it and if they would buy another one?

My other option is just waiting another year and upgrading my Macbook pro to a Macbook Air Pro (If the rumours come true)

I have an iPhone 4S and a MacBook Pro 13 and a new Ipad.

I have now got to the point that I don't take my MacBook when traveling - in fact I haven't used it in 3 weeks. There are 1 or 2 regular functions I do that would get some benefit from the MacBook v the iPad but for the difference in convenience, I work around.

My filing system is all Dropbox based, I link that to the iWork's apps via WebDAV (dropdav) and I can do all my word, excel and PowerPoint stuff through that. I use a couple of PDF viewers and editors for reviewing notes. I have a portable (but good) Bluetooth keyboard for processing heavier workloads.

With iMessage, email, twitter and some remote access apps I'm set to do most things a non-tech person would do most days without my Mac.

For viewing content, reading files etc it kills an iPhone and it is super convenient. Just take some time to get the apps you need and you can do most things without the Mac ...

EDIT: I do a lot of presentations, the ability to replace the need for a whiteboard via the use of mirroring and a whiteboard App is a huge bonus.. Also the fact that the iPad has its own SIM means accessing the net during presentations is safer as you aren't dependent on accessing the wifi (if available) in the place you are presenting. I cn walk in now, 5 mins before start time, plug in and go ...

What whiteboard app do you use?

Hey guys.
I have a consumer question, from someone who never has used any tablets/netbooks before.

I'm travelling to america for two months, all over america. I will be doing heaps of travel and have lots of waiting times at airports. I was wondering what people would recommend for a wi-fi only tablet/netbook to be used for:
uploading photos from my camera (I know ipads need a connection for this)
facebook
banking
music/games
emails
etc.

I have looked into the ipad a bit, unfortunately can only find the 16gb version for sale. I have looked into the camera adaptor on ebay for $8 which is very good.

The thing I'm not sure about is how other tablets compare and how netbooks compare?

Price I am looking for is preferably <$500

I've got a few.

I have been using Zig Zag Board but I think I prefer the look of Jot. My problem with Jot was that when attached to a projector not all of your iPad screen is displayed I.e there are areas you can write on that ont display AND it's laggy! But I've just discovered it has an alternate setting in App Settings specifically for mirroring which I'm told fixes both these...

There are other whiteboard apps that have additional features, widescreen and so on but my use is primarily as a pure whiteboard replacement.

The advantage to me of Jot is that the screen displays completely blank to the audience (but lagged killed it), assuming that's solved with the setting change I'd prefer it to Zig Zag because that also displays all the surrounding function keys etc to the audience (which creates clutter IMO) ..

Had a jailbroken iphone 3 for a few years now, still chugging along.

I was dead against getting an Ipad. Dead against, why buy a bigger, heavier version of something I already had! I had considered getting the Galaxy Note for an tweener.

Then I helped the Mother in law set her iPad up....

Within 2 weeks we have 2 new ipads in the house, and I've noticed a lot less TV being watched, it's used as noise in the background..

Think the formally ever present laptop will be consigned to the desk and used downloading/tranfering files from now on..

In short, love the ipad!

I am the same, hardly use the mbp now, just for downloads and when I need to do some things for work.

Any recommendations on the best way to get movies/tv shows, and itunes music from a laptop to an ipad3? Looked for a connector and the only one that may work is a camera usb connector, but the guy in the shop was unsure if it would work for other stuff?

try http://www.i-funbox.com/
Just connect to the laptop with your usb/ipad cable and copy the files.

Dloaded that to my laptop, connected IPAD3 and says no device connected...it is thoigh as laptop recognises it when I plug it in. Am I supposed to install something on the IPAD? Site is not very clear on Funbox?

You download the file and run it on the laptop and then connect your iPad, wait a little bit and then it should find it. You don't need anything installed on your ipad
Maybe reboot your laptop if it's not picking it up.

Hmm, have done all that. Re-booted everything, but still no connection. Even though Lappy recognises Ipad is connected. Wondering if it is an IPAD 3 issue. 2 might work okay, maybe they have not upgraded to connect with 3?

Anyway, thanks wmvaux....back to the old drawing board!

I got an iPad for my birthday a few months back, and aside from having a nice big screen to get the internet on, I'm not really seeing much use in it. The poor 3G reception at a location I often work at limits the use of the internet there, which cuts its usefulness, and I haven't found any really compelling apps.

I feel rather guilty, especially as it was a present, but it's just quietly gathering dust at the moment.

Any good apps for iPad ppl can recommend?
It depends on what kind of things your after, but ones I find really handy are... Crackle (Lots of free movies and TV shows), Foxtel as you can set your iQ to record from where ever you are, Dragon Dictation as you talk what you want typed and it does a great job, Living Earth is great as it shows a live view of the Earth with weather too, SoundHound is a great app for music, can pick a song from what you hear or by words you type in, Tapatalk is great for connecting to forums like big footy and others, The New Herald Sun ipad app is great, you can view the paper the same way you would read a paper version, Action Movie FX is fantastic for making your own action movie shots, Tom Tom works great, eBay on ipad is better than the internet, Appadvice is great for finding out about all the latest apps. There are lots of handy apps depending on what you want.

For video, I'd recommend AVPlayer HD. You can transfer video through the Applications tab in iTunes, or via WiFi in a browser or even FTP. Great program.

To manureid,

i-Funbox is worth persisting with, much easier to use than itunes. In the directory C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support, theres a file called libxml2.dll. Copy it and paste in into C:\Program Files\i-Funbox DevTeam, or wherever you installed i_Funbox (assuming you've already installed i-Funbox on your computer and it's a Windows computer).

Thanks, will try that as the IPAD still not showing as connected through the i-funbox application. Yet is showing as connected to the PC.
