I went an bought one. I don't really get into the Apple hype, but wanted something to display books and muck around with some apps. Does anyone had anything to add to this thread apart from random comments about Iphone/ Lenovo or comparisons with laptops or pigeon holing the Ipad? Anyone downloaded any cool apps I should be looking at?

you wanna stay away from the vast majority of iphone apps, as they look like complete crap when resized to the ipad secreen.

some good, mostly free apps:
cinexplayer - great for playing avi/xvid/divx etc
twitter
flipboard - magazine style access to your social networking.. pretty cool.. good for showing off :)
airvideofree - streaming video from your mac/pc, and can also use it to convert videos for imprting into itunes. this app is great. would and probably will end up getting the paid version.
IM+ - messenger client.
IMDB
Soundhound - good for finding new music
Aussie Rules HD
Lasoo - browse catalogues of local shops

I wondered what was going on at my Apple store as I went past. Ridiculously busy. I think there were at least 25-30 red shirts floating around. Crazy.

Yeah, very good day to pick up an iMac or MacBook Pro.

A month ago an entry level iMac was $1599.

Across the board price drops for all Macs brought the price down to $1449.

Today with Black Friday sale it's $1328.

$1328 for a 21.5-inch 3.06GHz Intel Core i3 iMac with 4GB DDR3 SDRAM and a 500GB SATA HDD ain't too shabby.

Anyone had a look at the new iPad apps for The Age and Sydney Morning Herald?

I like it for a 1.0 release. People will fall into two groups, those that want the electronic version to mimic the paper version, and those that don't. I would like e-newspapers and e-magazines to look like the traditional versions, but perhaps with some value-add. Ability to search and print, a way to do crosswords, and maybe a breaking news section.

I would probably enjoy getting the Green Guide as I've always known it, just in electronic form. Would be nice to have the ability to not download some sections eg. Drive, Jobs, etc, and the ability to delete old papers but keep some sections eg. Green Guide.

Hi guys, just a query.

I'm in limbo at the moment as whether to get the iPad now.

A new one must be around the corner - speculation is anywhere from late January to April - and no one from the Apple store has heard/can say anything about iPad 2.
If I were to get one, I would of course prefer a new model being such a significant/long-term electronics investment; however if this means waiting 2-3 months for something that has new things that I could do without (retina display, facetime camera etc.) I'd go for it now.

I'm going into uni (architecture) this year, and I'm not sure of it's usefulness in this regard (notetaking etc.) for someone who also has an iPhone.

Any advice?

Wait. It'll be a month or two until v2 is released and you'll be able to make a decision. If it's got stuff you want, awesome, if not, you'll probably be able to pick up a v1 cheap.

Also, Android 3.0 tablets are just around the corner, so Apple may finally face some competition which could affect pricing. They also could be better for what you're looking for.

Remember though that the iPad is (in my opinion at least) a consumption medium, rather than something that can be constantly used for production. If things like document creation and other uni stuff are what you want to use the device for (and you're stuck on Apple), I'd go for a MacBook Air as the next best thing.

I'd love to get my hands on a Galaxy Tab.

I think Apple have said they aren't interested in a 7" iPad, but I think they just have to have two models. The smaller Kindle is a great size, except for the stupid keyboard which I think is unnecessary.

I saw someone in my lecture using an iPad to take notes. It looked cumbersome and very difficult. Had it propped up at a 45 degree angle so she could see what she was typing but that angle sacrifices ease of typing ability.

New flash app out called iSwifter. Free to download and later prompts to buy at $3.99. Not a fast browser for everyday use, however it rocks at running flash based sites and vids. I am a UFC.tv subscription member and tried running vids through skyfire with no luck. This runs them with no streaming delay at all! you can also play flash based games as well through it. Recommended.

iPad 2 available from 5pm Friday.

Early indications are pointing towards a significant screen issue with the iPad2. Backlight bleeds on black screens in low light, apparently. Many folk are returning their units.

I'd wait until Apple fix the issue before purchasing. I know I'll be waiting, and considering they've already admitted to the problem, they'll be fixing it soon enough.

Still hasn't stopped people lining up around the block to buy it, but can't say i'm surprised given how die hard the Apple fan boys can be.

Yeah, most didn't realise until they got home and fired it up. It's not a big deal, just if you're watching something dark in a darkened space. Other than that, I think for games, email, web browsing, it's A-OK.

Seriously, are people buying into this technology for function.....or fashion??? PLEASE.......!!!! waiting hours in line for an IPAD....that's friggin geek city..

Personally, I think most iTool (sic) people can't see the grass from the trees but hey, thats just my opinion!!!!

Given the options available at the moment, solutions for Android are growing at an exponential rate....what with Android releasing 2.3 for their phones and Honeycomb 3 as their major outlet for Tabs...it still amazes me that there are cattle out there still nibbling bits out of Apples A*S........

I think you'll find the selling point is the Apps and the design/interface. Apple are on the mother-of-all winners there.

As I said the Apps are growing exponentially for Android and will catch Apple in the not to distant future.

I have been speaking with quite a few people about this recently and many claim the Androids are easier to use then iphone.

All im saying is I don't want to get caught up in the "hype" surrounding the iphones but rather get to the truth of the matter. From the feedback I'm getting, there are quite a few products that rival it and apparenty with samsung and LG coming out with their next generation smartphones, will beat Apple convincingly.

I just find it unusual the way many people rush to Apple because of what it is rather then what it can do:confused:
