iPhone 4 vs Samsung galazy s2?

"Protect your iPhone from accidents. Get a SquareTrade warranty."

I wonder if these SquareTrade people are seeking the iPhone market over the Samsung market...?

As I said before, the Galaxy S2 has a 22% larger screen, yet is 17% lighter.

Samsung has 13 Android phones with screens at least 3.5" yet weigh under 120g, all 15-25% lighter than the iPhone.

Either the iPhone's screen isn't big enough, or if it is, then the iPhone is simply too heavy.

Comparing the Iphones side by side with the competitions offerings I think the build quality of the Iphones are far superior to the Samsungs, Motorola's etc.

Internally everything is held together with actual screws  HTC are well known for using glue and double sided tape.

I can deal with a few extra grams if it means that my phone still looks like an Iphone in a years time

dang - I was hoping to read this thread and getter a better idea

I'm torn between Galaxy s2 (or wait for the nexus?) and the iphone 4s?

argh

The SGS2 is arguably the best phone out at the moment, Nexus looks the goods but IceCream Sandwich is the big plus there. If you can wait a little while keep an eye on the Nexus (and the new phones on the horizon) as the price is a little ridiculous at the moment. If you need a phone now grab the SGS2 as you can't beat it bang-for-buck, and ICS should be out for it early next year. I just ordered one for $499 delivered :thumbsu:

iPhone? Meh, personally I think they are overrated rubbish. Lots of people love them and if they are your thing then go for it, but the Samsung is a great phone and Android has quickly overtaken IOS.

how do you find the app store?

my current phone is a samsung Omnia Icon and quite frankly it is rubbish as it runs windows.

which phone did you pick up for $499? I assume the SGs2.

Yeah ordered a SGS2 from Kogan to replace my ageing HTC Magic (a very early Android phone), should arrive any minute. I was very close to preordering a Nexus from the UK but I just don't think it's $200+ better than the SGS2.

App store is good and it's constantly getting more apps, you can even browse and remotely install apps from https://market.android.com/?hl=en. Reading comments from a few ex iPhone users on other forums they've been able to find replacements for most/all of their favourite apps, and quite often for free. Oh, and if you're that way inclined you can download the installer files for paid apps manually and install them for free ;)

So are there any phones out there with ICS pre-installed? How long will new phones NOT come with ICS pre-installed? And what's a cheap phone that you can buy outright and unlocked?

how cheap is cheap for you?
there's the nexus S which can be bought pretty cheap. also apparently vodafone are selling EOL stock of the x10 for around 149. unlocked for free on their website

as for when ICS will come pre-loaded onto phones, i would say you are looking at least a couple of months after the release of the nexus.

Galaxy Nexus will be the first (17th November overseas, but no local release date yet), I don't think any others have been announced yet as the OS hasn't been officially released.

From what I've heard the cheapest half decent Android around is probably the Acer Liquid Metal, you can get it from JB Hifi for about $130 but from memory you have to unlock it yourself.

As stated below, there is currently no ICS phones, but the open source code should be out soon, probably within a week of two of the Nexus
It's going to take longer for the manufactures to port it to Sense and touchwiz and all that, but Cyanogen will start as soon as that is released and it should be available or most (rooted) phones after that, which i'd assume would be much quicker

I bought the SGSII and love it... but I have never owned an ;phone so cant comment on the difference between the two.

Its fast, does what I want, app store is easy to use... I am very happy with it.

well D day has arrived. still can't make my mind up.
one of the things pushing me iphone way is the ease of getting apps.

You'll be happy whichh ever way you go,

I think the iPhone is a better polished product end to end, but whichever Android you like can be better customized, if thats the wya you like things.

The one think I still like about Apple is, that they give you free upgrades 9IOS4 -> iOS5 etc)of iOSm where as it seemsa more difficult task to upgrade on Android.

well I ended up going with s2 :D

I really coun't think of a decent reason that I wanted the Iphone other than peer pressure (work that out) as everyone in my family and my wifes family have iphones.

after using a friends andriod at work, I still can't see a reason to go iphone.

all the apps I want are on andriod, I prefer the camera and i like the maps/nav function

so S2 it is for me.

Welcome to the "dark side" :)

so the s2 will get the upgrade? I don't think it is on the ICS platform.

also - i am facing into a barrage of criticsm from family members and friends about my choice - for what reason I have no idea, I actually find it amazing how chosing a phone can actually get people upset

1 person told me I'm a tech knob ? - I don't even know what that means....

so a question to the Andriod people (to a noob)

what would be the best things to do to my new phone to actually utilise its capabilities ? I was hoping to learn slowly what could be done but would be happy to get a bit of a crash course so I can show my apple loving friends that I haven't picked "a dud phone" and a "copycat OS"
