Is Brendon Goddard Overrated?

but that's the thing, he has good stats, he averaged 28 disposals in 2010 (i think), no one's saying he isnt a very good player, he just isnt in the league of Ablett/Judd/Swan/Pendlebury/Buddy/Riewoldt/Hayes/Selwood, those guys play the tough positions week in week out, it doesnt matter if they aren't as versatile because they dont need to be, they're elite in the elite positions, goddard simply is not.

You put your best players where the ball is or fwd of centre, you dont play your best player across HB especially when you already have elite HBs in your team.

Goddard can play all positions and to be honest due to this it probably has cost him higher awards. I like how who slotted Pendlebry and Selwoo there in front of him LOL. How many games has he spent patches at full forward were he still had 30 odd touches. You turn those games into 35+ and hes BOG.

Terrible post. He nearly beat your side on his own in GF1 yet you only mention GF2. Because he isn't ranked highly in clearances, it means he isn't in the best few mids in the league? He is the best marking mid in the game, as good as anyone in disposal and can play forward if his team needs a goal. He would be your best player, stop being an ignorant fool.

My point was as soon as he had a genuine elite mid as company he went from BOG to WOG (no racial pun intended), he went head to head with maxwell in the first half of GF2 and he clearly won that battle, he's a better player than maxwell so that isnt surprising, in GF1 he was pretty much head to head with shaw, shaw was still one of our best.

One game doesnt make you a champion, GF or not.

Why doesnt he rack up huge midfield numbers then? he cant get a clearance to save his life, are you saying the saints midfield didnt struggle last year?.

why wasnt he moved to FF after HT of GF2? it wasnt like you were 7 goals down now was it? lol.

Goddard will cop a tag from here on in, watch his form go to shit, i predicted it before the NAB cup even started and you know that.

Ever played mid field when your sides being beaten easily? Ever played mid field when your ruckman is getting flogged? Have a look at Balls Pendlbry and Swans numbers in the second half of GF1 when Jolly was beaten they were well down.

Why would you want the best kick in the AFL getting shambly kicks out of clearances when the object is to get the clearance to him. Again get a clue.

Our whole team was down in the second half, we thought we had it won and took the foot off the pedal, that can happen with young teams, GF2 was the true picture and that's beyond doubt.

Oh yeah of course God forbid a team mounting a challenge and Collingwood being put under the pump. You sound like a child that loses a Under 10s game.

You have no idea mate, seriously, just keep watching as the season wares on.

Would you like to look up his clearance rates?, fact is he wouldnt rank in the top 7 clearance players at collingwood, people say he can play anywhere at an elite level lol, he cant play midfield at an elite level and that's a fact, he went head to head with swan in the second half of GF2 and racked up the grand tally of 7 disposals (mostly ineffective), swan had 19.

Goddards never proven he can play fwd at a consistant elite level, the guy's a HB which the saints work very hard at making him the loose man, other clubs wont allow that anymore (hense my prediction he wont finish top 20 in the brownlow), that's part of the reason his numbers have been shit this year, dont believe me?, keep watching son.

Yeah nice selective use of stats moron. You pick out the 2nd half of the GF replay to back up your argument when the game was lost and the St Kilda players had pretty much thrown in the towel. How about the first GF when he tore your club a new one all around the ground and would have won a Norm Smith if it wasn't for Hayes being just as brilliant?

You can't judge Goddard on clearance stats either, he isn't a specialist inside mid like Swan. Swan can't go forward and take great overhead marks like Goddard does either and he also can't go into defence and play as a key defender/sweeper like Goddard does. Goddard's kicking is also a lot more effective than Swan's dinky little kicks, none of which is measured by stats alone.

Again, none of those players have the versatility Goddard does. They are specialist mids or forwards because in general they can't play anywhere else. Goddard can be infuential in a number of positions which the others can't which makes him more valuable than a player that can only play one position.

You're right that he isn't in the league of Ablett / Judd / Swan / Pendlebury / Buddy / Riewoldt / Hayes / Selwood. He is in a league of his own as an elite utility, a better comparison for him is players like Goodes, Hodge and Pavlich who can all play a number of positions too.

Look at the evidence, we absolutly spanked teams you were lucky to get over the line against during the finals and GF2 went along the same lines as the first half of GF1 exept we didnt let up in GF2.

Yup, in a league of his own with Goodes, Pavlich, Hodge, etc...

Seriously, Swan kicked 24.24 last year, compared to Goddard's 24.9, so don't tell me Swan can't go forward and kick a goal. Swan can't play defense, but he's still all over the ground working hard, and is a better midfielder than Goddard.

Again child we all saw what we saw StKilda minus there number one ruckman from quarter time took it to Collingwood and in the end drew. Perhaps the loss of Gram for the first half then Fisher at half time was to much for StKilda to again mount the same challenge but what that has to do with Goddard dominating in all positions in GF 1 I dont know.

Hows goddard going this year, you'd think if was the best player in the comp he'd be blitzing wouldnt you? how's he going anyway? our guns seem to going alright, that's because they're genuine guns, not guns every now and then.

Never said Swan can't kick a goal or go back into defence, most midfielders run all over the ground to get possessions. However he can't play as a key forward and take overhead marks like Goddard can or play as a key defender like Goddard can.

Swan maybe a better midfielder but Goddard is a better utility. Midfielders like Swan who can rack up stats are a dime a dozen though, utilities like Goddard are much more unique.

Yeah clearly hes finished. What sort of a clown are you.

By the way which AA was given the job of running with Swan v Port or North?

Judging him on just two games? Please.

Our whole team has been down the first two games and we've actually had decent opposition too. Collingwood have dominated against weak opposition so it's a lot easier for your guns to look good.

Hahahahahahahaahaahahahaahahahahahahahahaahahahahaha, i'll give you $50 for one, you're a deadset ****. hahahahahaahahahah, unbelievable.

It's hilarious how you use this excuse. You're team was down because you thought you had it won and took your foot off the pedal. That in itself is laughable, but then you argue statistics in the 2nd half of GF2 for Goddard and St Kilda are still relevent in comparison when clearly the game was won and gone by that stage and all of the Saints players were down. Very selective you are, but you are not a hypocrite are you?

This year? You mean the 2 games he has played in? Ridiculas comment this is. Way to early to be judging just yet. Plus Goddard has hardly been woeful. He may get some more attention this season, and a good player in Brett Delidio did a job on him last week. Goddard was not disgraced.

Your guns are going good, great players, but remember their opposition have also been the same two teams that last years wooden spooners have defeated.

Love the selective comparison of stats too. Of course Dane Swan is going to get more clearances as that is his role. Goddard is clearly our designated kicker whether in the midfield or across half back. St Kilda dish out to him most times to utilise his elite skills. Not to get shonky kicks out of packs.

How were his stats in the Nab cup, didnt have the grand possession total of 3 kicks in one of them? lol, keep making excuses.

Terrible thread. Absolute champion of the game.

Youd think so but here we are.:thumbsu: Amazing how Collingwood supporters have spent basically the whole pre season saying how shit SKildas bottom eight are and that Collingwood are close to the best all round side ever. Then say the only reason we drew was the efforts of Goddard and Hayes. So he along with one other took on the best and almost won.

Yet hes overated apparently:eek:
