Swan may be at the top end of midfielders but there a number of mids that rack up big stats. Just look at someone like Priddis for West Coast or Carrazzo at Carlton, neither are elite players but they can still rack up big numbers like Swan can.

Goddard has had 30 disposals, 10 marks and a goal or two twice in his last 50 games....ie it happens once a season.

These purple patches you speak of simply dont exist.

I wasnt being that specific to the stats, give or take a couple disposals, a mark or two and that is what Goddard is capable of doing regularly.

10 or so touches around half back with 5 marks or so.

Then push forward and take a couple marks and kick a goal or two.

As I said, funny I need to repeat, 2 rounds is not enough to make solid judgments. Especially given Goddard was far from poor and although beaten, certainly not disgraced by a player who should have been AA last season.

Firstly, Goddard is a superstar. One of the best going around. i would happily have him at Collingwood. Secondly the jealousy that some Saints fans have about Collingwood is incredibly amusing. Why would they feel the need to discuss Swan in a Goddard thread? It is obvious that it stems from us having won as many Premierships in the last 6 months as they have in their history.

Probably because people brought up Goddard in the Swan is underrated thread and said Swan was a better player than him. This was the reason TownleyTime made this thread as a petty response to people saying Goddard was better.

So as per usual it's the Collingwood supporters starting this rubbish, we are just responding to it. I don't really see the point in comparing Swan and Goddard anyway as they are completely different players.

Its hard for a Collingwood supporter to understand that one player may be beaten by an other or in fact draw even. Collingwood players only ever have bad days themselves and it has nothing to do with there opponent its simply was just a bad day.

Swan

What do all these players have in common. They are highly decorated. Buddy can be assessed slightly differently as FF rarely win B&Fs but he has won one and he is a Coleman medalist and consistent high goal scorer

Dominant players in Goddards position win B&Fs, Brownlows, Media awards etc.

Goddard has none of these. 43 Brownlow votes (164 games)in a career to date. Compare that to Judd 162 (200 games), Ablett 112 (192 games), Riewoldt 95 (199 games), Swan 79 (153 games) and even Buddy 45 (122 games).

Awards etc are not everything but they are an objective marker. Goddard within his own club, by the media experts and offical awards of the comp has an empty cabinet. Thats okay if you are talking a very good topline player. Top 5 rankings are hard for me to give for a bloke who doesnt stack up with the objective measure we have available.

We are seduced by his wonderful potential and he has the game to be top 5. I just wouldnt rank him there yet without the consistency that his rivals for such a position all possess.
