Is Buckley A Good Coach?

The senior coach is an important club figure and a legitimate topic of discussion. It's fair to do so and everyone has a right to express their view.

The mod team observed that the thread was dominated by a few protagonists and their points were repeated i.e. 8 years of regression vs marked improvement in 17,18 etc Pretty much everyone with a strong opinion has already expressed it here.

What further degraded discussion was the simplistic "sack FIGJAM" or "he's a legend" type posts.

This thread will remain open. If your view has slightly shifted or you have new thoughts please share. In an effort to encourage quality discussion repetitive statements and circular arguments will from now on be deleted as will silly posts suggesting that we sack a coach on match-day.

FYI Gone Critical Anzacday Maggie5

Buckley's brave move of moving De Goey in to our back 50.. and having Mcreery up forward.. on his lonesome.. with half the game to go.. 3 goals down..

That is the stuff of legend.

He is not a good matchday coach.. he is an absolute legend our FIG.
Indeed, only he can take a forward and then turn them into I don't know what. Moore, Mayne, Stepho, DeGoey, Elliott ... the list goes on. He is a forward killer.

He already had 2 flags in his pocket, and than won us our last one.

Its irrelevant, Buckley cant coach.
Coaches a super team in the Eagles, given every advantage by the AFL.
1995 - 2009: no flags.

Yeah, he’s a super coach

I didn't say MM was a super couch, you did.

He won 3 flags - Buckley will never win one.

Fact is, unless the club does the right thing and sacks him ASAP, he will be the 8th longest serving coach in the history of the VFL/AFL without a flag.

He cant coach.

Mick would have to be right up there for the longest streak without a flag. Can you look it up for me please Doc?

Apparently too long because Ed had to get his boy in there after MM coached us to a flag.
Your memory might be playing tricks on you. The succession plan was announced before the 2010 flag.

Nothing could have been worse than Flagless Nathan - as the stats show.

Better than 7th?

Doc, you really need to relax. Neither of us has any say in what happens next.
There is no argument to be won here.

You’re right in that none of us has a say.
But we fans care more than the people who are paid and employed to do a job in the best interests of the football club.

When this doesn’t happen....the fans are the ones who suffer most.

And yet his apologists keep on carping “it’s not his fault”, “he can’t get out there and kick the ball”, “he doesn’t construct the list”, “not his fault if the players can’t execute the game plan”, etc, etc etc. One has to wonder what Bucks is actually responsible for. He’s the Teflon man in the opinion of some of his acolytes.

what about you guys dismissing every achievement as either a fluke, an outlier, or due to assistants coaches,
I think that’s much worse.

Which flag has he achieved - what achievements as a coach will go down as worthy - other than media trinkets inc coach of the year?

10 years, no flags. Went close in 2018, but overwhelmingly on a downward trend since he took over. Don’t think too many coaches who inherited what Bucks did, and then goes 10 years without a flag would still have their jobs. He’s retained his position and the blind support of his acolytes because he was undoubtedly a champion player and a “favourite son” of the club. Doesn’t mean he’s a good coach though.

VFL/Afl is littered with examples of champion players who were ignominious failures as coaches. I don’t put Buckley in that category, but he has fallen short. Overdue for a new voice and leadership.

what are Moore Howe and Roughead if not KPD?
Moore started as a forward then we turned him into a backman. Howe is not a key position player. Roughead was a delisted Ruckman/forward mainly at the Dogs. Tarrant came back. Apart from Ben Reid; excluding Moore and Cloke who were father son gifts; you'd have to say Hine's record of drafting KPP's in the last 15 years has been non- existent to abysmal.

Which Coach has got a better resume sitting on GW’s desk today?
We have to sniff around. Clarko, Lyon or a young bloke who has served some time as an assistant or coached at a young age and is looking for a second chance. Leppitch or Voss. Caracella and Sam Mitchell would be worth an interview. Clinging to what you have because you are afraid of the unknown is ridiculous. Bucks has had his opportunities to achieve something and after many dull years he almost pinched a flag. It's been downhill since that day.
