Is Buckley A Good Coach?

The senior coach is an important club figure and a legitimate topic of discussion. It's fair to do so and everyone has a right to express their view.

The mod team observed that the thread was dominated by a few protagonists and their points were repeated i.e. 8 years of regression vs marked improvement in 17,18 etc Pretty much everyone with a strong opinion has already expressed it here.

What further degraded discussion was the simplistic "sack FIGJAM" or "he's a legend" type posts.

This thread will remain open. If your view has slightly shifted or you have new thoughts please share. In an effort to encourage quality discussion repetitive statements and circular arguments will from now on be deleted as will silly posts suggesting that we sack a coach on match-day.

so who are these available Coaches with better resumes, who are waiting for a call?

If Buckley's resume is so good, then why have this team gone backwards for 9 out of 10 years?

Was Buckley's the best resume on the board table in 2009 when the succession plan was hatched? Were there even any other coaches considered for the position?

No - he was parachuted into position because he was an ex-player.

It's utterly irrelevant whether some phantom resume is or isn't better than Buckley's - the team has any number of faults from game plan to forward structure to poor skills that have existed most of Buckley's tenure. He has to wear the failure for that. He has had input into this list - it's his. Does Longmuir have a better resume than Buckley? Because he sure as shit is a better coach.

Too many players - Grundy, DeGoey, Pendlebury, Sidebum, Hoskin-Elliott, Cox and Thomas have gone backwards at an alarming rate. Others like Brown have failed to develop at all. The ones like Daicos who have, have stated that it was due to other coaches - Hocking, in his case (ditto Phillips).

Almost any assistant coach who has been in the system for at least 5/6 years, preferably under two coaches, and especially if they have been part a Premiership as either player or coach, or preferably both, would have a vastly superior resume to Buckley.

He is a failure on every level, apart from media performances, where he excels.

It’s funny how apparently 2018 was all bucks, but the other 90% poor years “it’s not his fault”. Go figure

Ed would go away completely if he had the interests of the Club at heart and not his own deluded ego.
Alas, you speak the truth. I fear he is going to drag us down even further.

Terry Wallace and Rodney Eade had better resumes than Alastair Clarkson.

In the end, Hawthorn opted for Clarkson and the rest is history as they say.
I'm very open to us going down the untried route majority of premiership coaches have done it on their first go at it. We go down that route then I want Mitchell, Yze or Kingsley.

Bucks is one of many of the culprits
No if that were true you'd be screaming that he shouldn't be involved and should let the professionals in list management and recruiting do their job

They did, they just happen to be abysmal at it and you want a scapegoat for their incompetence

So you're saying that Hine is ok with his drafting but Buckley just can't get the best out of them?

I think in the absence of objective assessments of Club recruiters we are all guessing.
But the off the cuff subjectives views, like that of the poster saying we don’t recruit KPD, are easy to invalidate as criticisms of Hine.

What sort of idiot, gets a few goals up, the opposition react by dropping players behind the ball, we can't score, not even get close and he does nothing until the game is all but lost.

Sure we are not the best side, young kids but the coach needs to be able to react to opposition tactics. He does nothing, just sits there chewing gum and blaming the players. Piss him off now, he is turning talented kids into shit trucks.

We are though, so fretting about the past is not going to change that. We face massive upheaval.

Upheaval now & again is required & as long as we come out the other side stronger & with a plan for the future then things will be fine.
‘we accept mediocrity from too many in the football department for far too long. It’s time to reset with fresh faces & fresh ideas on & off the field.
My opinion of course & you disagree. That’s your prerogative.

Nothing wrong with the stat. Buckley will be the 8th longest serving coach never to win a flag.
And when you add in his playing career, well.......
There is something wrong with you delighting in it though.
