The senior coach is an important club figure and a legitimate topic of discussion. It's fair to do so and everyone has a right to express their view.

The mod team observed that the thread was dominated by a few protagonists and their points were repeated i.e. 8 years of regression vs marked improvement in 17,18 etc Pretty much everyone with a strong opinion has already expressed it here.

What further degraded discussion was the simplistic "sack FIGJAM" or "he's a legend" type posts.

This thread will remain open. If your view has slightly shifted or you have new thoughts please share. In an effort to encourage quality discussion repetitive statements and circular arguments will from now on be deleted as will silly posts suggesting that we sack a coach on match-day.

Good question.

Some base their opinion on God only knows what.

Some base their opinion the facts - and the facts are irrefutable, undeniable, un-spinnable.

just put him on ignore. There is no reasoning with him & you are just doing your own head in.

Yep, and whose fault was it allowing all that to happen? The footy boss? And why did the board oversee it all and just let it happen?

To add there is no known universe we are as bad as we are currently showing, we are a much better team than bottom 4 - even with what we've got. That is not fault of list management and recruitment.
The universe that contains 3 slow 30+ mids that can't spread or get to contests is just that universe, game plan breaks down and you look like bottom 4 dog shit

After 10 years as coach, Buckley is as much to blame for the list problems, the type of players we have recruited and the type which we haven't recruited as anyone else at the club. I don't understand why people separate coach and player list as though Buckley can just wash his hands of the recruiting errors that have plagued this club for 10 years.
Buckley I would think has a big say in what type of players we want or need. Is it his responsibility to then go and
a) watch all the potential drafties available
b) determine who else is available through free agency, etc and negotiate them coming to the Pies.

And yes Beams was a huge mistake but negotiating the signing of Treloar & Grundy on mega deals and extending Stevo's isn't his job. We've had plenty of dud trades over decades but it's the miss management, lack of wiggle room in our cap and absolute lack of quality young players Bucks has had access to that is now really starting to f?ck us over.

No - MM signed a contract where his tenure as Coach ended in 2011 and then was to start a new role as DC in 2012. With the complete knowledge and agreement that Bucks would then be the Coach.

He chose to accept those terms - the Coaching contract was fulfilled to the letter no sacking occurred.
Yeah, right. Sign this contract, either way, we're not going to renew you as senior coach.

Sacked.

Yes. And replaced as senior coach at the end of 2011.

I suppose if you want to get technical, he was demoted, and replaced by the work experience kid.

Its worked out really weel.
He resigned after losing the Grand Final for us.

Worked out great - MM won a flag.

All the facts above were clearly outlined in the contract he signed in 2009.

MM walked out and blew up the succession plan.

Really- please post the front page of the HS saying - “Pies sack Mick”.
C’mon, we all know that Mick Malthouse did not resign from the coaching role. He obviously wanted to continue coaching but was told that he will be replaced in the role by Buckley.

Call it what you want, however, it wasn’t his choice to vacate the position.

Not as senior coach, he didn't.

That was the last day in that role.

He, quite rightly, resigned from the cobbled together pretend job Ed the Head came up with so he could have his cake & eat it too.

He ended up with the cake all over his face.
Like I said, he resigned.

they renewed him for 2 years and he got a flag

If Flagless Nathan had done the right thing in 2011, MM might have won another.

We'll never know of course - pity we never got the opportunity to find out.

He was sacked, but the usual suspects are attempting, and failing miserably, to spin it another way.

He agreed to the contract, that was his choice.
