Is Buckley A Good Coach?

The senior coach is an important club figure and a legitimate topic of discussion. It's fair to do so and everyone has a right to express their view.

The mod team observed that the thread was dominated by a few protagonists and their points were repeated i.e. 8 years of regression vs marked improvement in 17,18 etc Pretty much everyone with a strong opinion has already expressed it here.

What further degraded discussion was the simplistic "sack FIGJAM" or "he's a legend" type posts.

This thread will remain open. If your view has slightly shifted or you have new thoughts please share. In an effort to encourage quality discussion repetitive statements and circular arguments will from now on be deleted as will silly posts suggesting that we sack a coach on match-day.

I'm not a Buckley apologist but do bare in mind that we need to have a plan for targeting and securing someone we see as actually being better before we sack Bucks.

And before you say anyone can be better than Bucks despite our genuinely abysmal standing, think of Carlton et al who seemingly just cycle through coaches and stay relatively close to the bottom almost always.

I don't want that to be out future.

"bare in mind"? - bear in mind that the problem is that the coaches' box often appears to be bare in mind after quarter time.

Here's a game plan: stop blaming the coach and go out and get some mids that aren't teenagers or plus 30 vets and they'll actually be able to 'implement' a game plan
You sound like a broken record, everyone in the football world is criticizing our shit game plan but you reckon it's everyone else's fault except the coach, give it a rest you sound like an idiot and no one is seeing your point of view, go back to the club you actually support

Correct me if I'm wrong.. but wasn't Buckley given an extension after 3 consecutive jlt game victories? What yr was that?

Well done Ed.

Thanks heaps re.
Re Rome had to fight about 5 different wars against the Greeks re. Each time the Romans spanked Greek butt but then left the same pesky Greek rulers in place. It never solved the problem so eventually Rome got sick of having to spank Greek butt and finally put the foot down and went full conquest. 1000 years later and Greece is still Rome re.
The relevance here is that Collingwood is like Rome .. messing around, avoiding doing what's really needed to solve the problem.. thinking a slight change to the status quo would be enough. Buckley is like Greece, the pesky problem that won't go away, performing poorly in battle and living off past reputation.
You're welcome re.

1. We’ve beaten one top 8 team since round 7 of 2020.
2. We are sitting 2/8…. Including one win against NORTH MELB which was still not an EASY win
3. We can’t score, this isn’t a new trend have had how many goalless quarters?

and we are still having this conversation?

Yeah let’s sign up to another 3 years of 50pt scores, trying not to lose games instead of trying to win.. what a formula for success that is! Anyone saying we haven’t been flogged this year. Yes we have. 5-6 goal losses when you can only score 5-6 goals a game are absolute FLOGGINGS.

The buckley people are even making up crap now, David King said yesterday that we've only lost by an average of 19 points. How is that relevant even if it is true? I think that he is making it up anyway. We need to sack buckley this week before more damage is done

I think the decision re Buckley and assistant coaches will be made (internally) after Round 11 and I think GW has seen and heard all that he needs to in the coaches box to make the decisions.
I think that Buckley and all Assistants are gone.
Why did it take so long to work out that the defensive zone was bad ? - especially after the Suns exploited it ?
C Brown failed goal shot against the Lions was again repeated in the same manner yesterday ? How can that happen ?
Recruiting needs to be better as if we had a forward like C Dixon yesterday we win - not because of his goal scoring but his kick from Pies CHF in the last quarter that set them away.
Charlie could not run when he was at the Suns but yesterday he ran well and all day.
I cannot see why the Pies have such poor skills as its not as they work a full time job and play football socially - although some of the social footballers skills would be better than some of the Pies list.
Wrighty needs to go have a coffee with Bellyache and get the Cheese to drop in there for a session and show them how to tackle front on.
Pies need more work on the Basic Skills instead of all the advanced crap - go back to Football 101.

Yep - kick straight before "strategizing" :( on a defensive / attacking/ sideways/ flexible/ rotating / fuc*en game fuc*en plan

I couldnt believe the callum brown lack of shot on goal. I immediately wondered what buckley was telling him to do. The skills are terrible. You have to wonder why buckley keeps recruiting players who cant hit a target. Wright doesn't need to have coffees. He just needs to show buckley the door...

Exit latte?

The coffee reference was for for Wrighty to have a coffee with Bellamy at the Storm and get Cheese (Brandon Smith) to teach the Pies how to tackle a player head on.
Buckley does not seem to like thinking out of the Box but Wrighty seems a lot different and Bellamy is a great source of knowledge and coaching knowledge.
Seems stupid that you have the current NRL premiers as neighbors and we don't try to utilize their knowledge on tackling - and the Piers are average (or below) at tackling.

Just on that, tackling is a technique to be learned but at the end of the day mass matters. Our team looked small compared to Port. Took a couple of players to bring Ollie down in one play.

I noticed this too. Port have got some big boys. We are very light on by comparison.

More time in gym - less emotional bonding?
Will bond quite well after a successful tackle...
