Play Nice Is Gil really this much of a fool? Jobe's Brownlow and the commission's "hard" decision.

As I understand it - recreational drugs on game day are assessed as PEDs are they not?

You can't go and snort a line of charlie pre-game and get off on a warning because it's a "recreational" drug can you?

So has anyone who won a Brownlow been found guilty of snorting coke on game day in their Brownlow year?

Gill has been sucked into Essendon's sob story and probably scared of Essendon's take everything to court attitude. If the AFL had any integrity or balls they wouldn't be letting Watson keep the Brownlow medal and wouldn't be letting Essendon have all these early draft picks. Gil hasn't done much wrong but his handling of the Essendon drug saga has been nothing short of gutless. Failing to discipline a football club that still claims to be the victim and is showing no signs of remorse or having learnt it's lesson, instead letting it profit from this situation.

There's a right and a wrong here and Gil is burying his head in the sand.

May as well scrub the word fairest off the Brownlow medal's title and give all the eligible players a Brownlow. Nothing fair about Watson winning the brownlow or Essendon having pick one in this years draft.

Watson should have given it back ages ago. ****** hell mate, you've won a best and FAIREST award, and you've subsequemtly been found to have been using performance-enhancing drugs at the time. And don't the WADA rules say that any award or victory achieved by a doping athlete is null and void automatically?

The original CAS decision ordered awards be stripped, the only thing that's in the AFL s hand is wether to award it to the runner(s) up the stripping us out Of the AFL s hand, it also applies to the club awards, as Essendon is a signatory through the AFL

The dilemma for Gil is he knows they should strip Watson of his medal, but if they do this, for the first time the AFL will be seen to be taking a stance against illicit drugs. Up to now, they've pretended there's no problem.

He thinks doing the correct thing is brave, I think not doing the right thing is gutless.

actually apply that to all 34 players ,Hird ,Thommo, The doc, the bootstudder, the tea lady, better still mass trial, lynch the lot burn their kids at the stake
raze their houses, whats enough for the nuff nuffs
cotchin brownlow would rank up there with Hardy and Dipper as worthy winners

Its such a clean cut decision I don't understand the problem....

Him and his team mates were found guilty of doping on the actual year he won it, so doped up him and doped up those around him got him an empty medal.

Im surprised he'd even want to keep it, it must feel so hollow and undeserved.

A real man would have handed it back.

Would anyone remember if they'd bet on Mitchell or Cotchin and call in to collect? You know how the AFL is with the betting agencies...

Horses get positive drug tests all the time and while they lose the prize money the betting has been resulted long ago and that is that.

The Brownlow would be no different. Not a factor at all.

Bet the AFL wish they knew the Mitchell news was going to break this morning. Could have stripped it after the appeal failed last night and everyone would have forgotten about it already!

Gil is a smarmy shifty slimy person but certainly no fool. His single objective is to optimise the financial boon that is the AFL. Outcomes will be micro managed on a case by case basis. Integrity takes a back seat to the Single Objective. His recent comments on the difficulty of the Watson case is a clever ploy to make him appear human, and prepare the way for a decision that will either upset people here or there. Like a politician Gil knows most people dont follow the issues closely and are easily distracted and manipulated. Far from a fool he is a master.

Has anyone yet realised that this isn't Gil's decision to make?
It comes to the AFL Commission, which Gil would normally be a part of, but in this instance he is not.

In fact, he has publicly stated he would back whatever recommendation went to the Commission as far as whether to strip the medal is concerned.

"What I've said is that I would step down from the Commission and lead effectively the prosecution and lead the recommendation that went to the Commission and then they would make a decision and he would be represented and have a view, whichever way it goes,"

Was Watson rubbed out for this cheating? I think he was actually. Did Watson accrue any votes in these games that he was rubbed out for?

So in fact Watson was banned for 22 games during which time he couldn't collect votes. So he has been punished then right?

What happened to Ben Cousins' votes in years in which he may have subsequently been found to be taking drugs? Were those votes rescinded and cancelled?

I also understand Cousins was rubbed out for a year, 22 games, and unable to accrue votes during those 22 games. Was Cousins punished twice by being rubbed out for 22 games and then retrospectively being penalised of votes he got in prior years?

What about Dane Swan?

Should Swan be penalised for votes he received during a time when there may have been questions about whether any of those votes he recorded were in games in which had he been tested he would have tested positive for something.

Can you explain to me what punishment has to do with it?

It needs to be taken off him as he is not eligible to have it. That is not punishment.

Jobe should have the brownlow medal taken off him, and it should be given to Moana Hope. Forget the drugs; he only won it because he's a privileged, white, cis-gender, hetero male.

I'm sure he'll be fine with that outcome.

Can you prove his performances during that year were somehow enhanced?

How about - he scored nearly twice as many Brownlow votes as in any other year he has played?

He had more disposals, goals, clearances, contested possessions than any other year.

It's the only year he didn't miss a single game.

Now, this could be co-incidence. Every player has a career year sometime. But......

He's been accused of taking drugs for the 2012 season and the 2012 season only. Sure looks enhanced to me.
