AFL is out of the question, but elevation to the VFL surely must be considered if the VAFA team keeps growing on its recent success...

Most people in here seem to forget that Hobart is not in Melbourne. Surely it would generate money and jobs for the region? There's that angle to take. The AFL surely have the money, or at least will have when the current expansion teams generate some more interest it may be a viable thing to do.

The idea just has a certain nobility to it in restoring an old team that I like too.

This is an incredible thread. If the AFL wants to restore the goodwill of the supporters that actually allow the game to function this would seem like a logical step.

And it would even be good for expanding. The AFL would be known as the code that cares about the fans. It would be especially good at attracting NRL followers sick of RL post Sewer League.

Oh yeah I can see all those League fans in Sydney just sitting around waiting to buy Fitzroy memberships and watch them play on the weekends. Sure.

It's a big shame what happened to Fitzroy. A merger with the Bears was probably the worst result. Relocation like the Swans I'm sure would've been much more preferable in hindsight. Maybe to Tassie. Or shipped up to Brisbane before the AFL even created the Bears. If not even to WA, the Fremantle Lions, or SA. Even though North fans would disagree and no one wanted VFL mergers I feel a Fitzroy-North merger would've worked well for all involved.

That all said though I can't see how Fitzroy would prosper back in the competition as another Victorian side. They'd just harm North, Melb, WB fighting for more dollars and talent. I can't seem them being financially viable.

And restarting Fitzroy as part of some expansion in to another state would be even more insulting I think. If you are a Fitzroy fan who stuck through the merger then you've got the 3 flags in Brisbane to show for it. If you stayed with the local team then you've got that. If you jumped shit entirely then what's going to make you to come back with some expansion project set up as a third WA team or Tassie team or Northern Sydney team. Just doesn't make sense to me.

Obviously this just isn't going to happen.

BUT… it's interesting that we feel that there is 'no room' for more teams in Melbourne. That is basically dictated by the crap Docklands stadium deal. Teams need to get x amount through the gate to break even, face losing money if below.

Ideally the home side would take the door takings and that would be that, but no, not with this modern crap stadium deal.

I for one am sad that there is no more Fitzroy. Iconic club.

I wouldn't have been interested in following a relocated Victorian team, and I bet I'm not in the minority of Freo fans when I say that.

It might be good enough for Sydney supporters, but not West Aussies.

Adding a team to a saturated market would bring nothing but problems and would probably make 3 struggling Vic clubs into 4 extinct Vic clubs.

THE Fitzroy Football Club, one of eight founding clubs of the VFL, played in the VFL-AFL for one hundred years and who now play in the VAFA are not the "Fitzroy Reds". The "University Reds" who changed their name to the "Fitzroy Reds" went out of existence at the end of 2008.
What happened to the Reds at the end of 2008? Players, jumpers, home-ground, theme song, supporters?
