I tend to ignore the last round and in the period before late round wins - I reckon they can give false hope. I recall a late win against the Dogs at the Gabba a season or two back and went home confident that we were miles in front of them & boy was I wrong. Leppa has had a pretty easy run so to speak- expectations have been 0, so it's not hard to meet or exceed them. Last year there was hope (false) that we could possibly make the 8 - yet we were the first team out of contention. Yep injuries cruelled our shallow list but we didn't seem to have a lot of fight at times (from the limited bits I saw). So at this time of the year, every club is selling hope and so are we. We have been a bottom six club for nigh on 6 years, which coincides with the introduction of the Suns. We still have the youngest list in the competition, when the oldest lists are the ones battling it out. I don't think there is any paradigm shift coming that will change that. Weighing everything up - I can't see us getting out of the bottom 6 this year all things being equal. Which brings me to Leppa - I honestly don't know if he can coach or not and I'm not confident I'll learn anymore this year.
So from these statements, you think we should hold the course?

I can't see any messiah on the horizon - the muppets parading as our club management jettisoned Voss in very similar circumstances and it proved what? This is a long term rebuild - so let's stay the journey and see how we go.

Not sure the idea that we judge Leppa on the first part of 2016 flies as justification for a decision one way or the other to be honest. You could very very easily argue that with an extremely hard draw till the bye, and at least 3 new senior players and possibly 1 draftee making their debuts in a new team with a new gameplan in that period, what sort of evidence do people expect? My gut feeling is that we will be lucky to have scraped together 3 wins possibly 4 by then - and if thats the case you may as well sack him now.

I don't see Leon Cameron, nor did I see Bluey face the sort of pressure that we as supporters put on our coaches at similar stages of their clubs development. You have to force yourself to ignore anything prior to 2 years ago to really assess our success or failure on field. Yes we've been struggling for years and our desire to see success supersedes time... but the reality is we now have the youngest most inexperienced list. 2 years in we are the GWS (18/18)/Suns(17/17) of years past... and to expect our results to be anything else is to set an unrealistically high bar to judge by.

What I do see as a huge huge positive is the unity, restructure and stabilization of our off field situation. And Leppa is a large part of that structure. Support staff including the Lamberts, Austin and the seemingly increased numbers of trainers, are now structured around his vision. It is simply impossible to get your front of house right if the back of house is dysfunctional. Rightly or wrongly, Leppa is an integral part of a unified team - the first in a long time. And if you believe Stefan Martin's words, one that was working just fine thank you very much despite the speculation.

I'm not 100% convinced Leppa is the perfect or even the right coach. And its easy to mount an argument one way or the other based on whatever stats you want to choose... injuries, wins/losses... But for me there's way more to this decision and perhaps for some, my reasons are impossible to grasp and are baseless. It's the immeasurable's.

Leppa's (and his team) have built a list 2 years ago I thought was impossible. There's a depth now so sadly lacking 24 months ago it seemed there was no promise. Now there is. It's not ready yet... but one day it will be.

Senior players are willing to shift here. You don't make life altering decisions if you see no hope of promise.

Senior staff members are willing to do the same. Promotions are one thing, but you have to believe and buy in - by doing so you trust its a step in the right direction.

There's a core group of senior players who have bought in lock, stock and barrell and the newer ones are starting to do the same. That's not something you do unless they believe what they see and hear.

I wish 2015 had given us more evidence to base him on. A chance to run his plan and team without injuries cruelling them, and expecting boys to play men. But it didnt. And I don't buy into Port or the Dogs being reasons to argue we should have done better. Lets see sustained success from both teams before we put them on pedestals.

For now, I think he's worth the chance. Roos would have got it. Eade will get it. It will take 12 months to bed this team down. To have constant speculation the whole time is distracting and destructive.

Give him 2 years now, and if in 12 months its obvious he's not the right man sack him then. Contracts are worthless anyway in the AFL these days.

like your analysis notliondown.
in the average age/games experience, i have been trying to find the stats on those averages as compared to the suns and giants in their first year. i know we rank last as they did in their first years but can't seem to find the actual age average and games average to compare them.
might help to put the expectations on the team and leppa for 2016 into perspective.

Agree with this one. 2 year extension but the 2018 part is linked to a trigger on results of 2016/2017. If we are going downhill, we have to payout for a year and search for a new coach.

If Leppitsch hasn't got us moving in an upward trajectory after his fourth year, he will be gone. With that said, i reckon we'll improve enough for him to keep his job. If that doesn't happen though, I wouldn't mind the club approaching Ross Lyon for the top job. Lyon might not be interested in coaching a side that's not ready for a flag tilt but I'd say he'd be ready to jump ship again at the end of Fremantle's run in the top four.

Ross would be a PR disaster for us I reckon

Geez i thought we play slow and boring football now. Could you imagine if Ross got appointed. Al clarkson on the other hand.

Lyon brings attributes to sides that we are currently missing. His teams always run both ways, stick to structures, attack the man and ball around the contest and generally keep the opposition under inordinate amounts of pressure.

Not suggesting Lyon should be our next coach (although I would take Lyon's win/loss record) but, for all the criticism of the style of play, we could do worse than modelling parts of our game on a Lyon coached side. At least for a supporter, you know your side will show up and compete.

This will be another area of interest. Not a fair metric considering the amount of ball that went into our 50 this year, but improvements further up the field should give our defenders some breather.

This is the other reason I believe Hanley should continue on HBF role when fit. Hanley will be our most match-aware, creative player in defense when he gets the ball. Until we find an able replacement to pick this up (could be McGrath), he needs to be on the backline providing that dash.

18. Brisbane Lions
Aside from veteran Daniel Merrett, coach Justin Leppitsch has looked long-term and backed a terribly young defensive unit for the Lions. They leaked the most goals per opposition forward 50 entry in 2015 and conceded the second most number of marks. With more games into defence-first stoppers like Darcy Gardiner and Justin Clarke, along with young aerial specialist Harris Andrews, these numbers should improve in 2016.

Good post POBT I don't get the Ross Lyon hate based on his performance. Yeah boring at times and ultra defensive but the Saints were a point away from a premiership and climbed the ladder to be there twice. Freo have been good since he took over and they really seem to have been let down by list management and recruitment of KPFs (I'm sure all of us can relate). I wouldn't say no to Ross.

If, and please note the if, Leppa doesn't make it I'd like to look at Brett Ratten. He had the Blues with an average list playing well and was more a victim of that toxic board and their insane ambitions than poor performance. He has been at The Hawks for a while now and could bring a lot.

Having said that, I want Leppa to succeed and I want this list to succeed. All speculation is just that at this point.
