I always thought Boulton would have been a smart pick....interesting to see how he goes with the difficult task of Carlton.

Good post POBT

If, and please note the if, Leppa doesn't make it I'd like to look at Brett Ratten. He had the Blues with an average list playing well and was more a victim of that toxic board and their insane ambitions than poor performance. He has been at The Hawks for a while now and could bring a lot.

Brett Ratten for sure! He did very very well with Carlton, great player's coach, and I am stunned he hasn't been picked for another head coaching role. That may very well be of his own choosing though...

No way to Lyon. It's a running joke in Perth how he never trades nor ever plays any youth or draftees. Plays far too safe for my liking. Great contract coach to take a team to the top in their premiership window (which we are not), but don't ask him to spare a though to the club's future.

Theres also the matter of poor match day attendances. Not a smart strategy in our market to hire a coach (Lyon) who goes for the most horrendous to watch game style imaginable.

To a certain degree, If your winning then your winning but I'm glad I dont have to put up with that dour garbage as a fan.

Finals or bust, knocking on the door at least. FFS
I think that's way too optimistic for were our list is at. The only place on the field we have bonafide guns is through the middle. Our keys are both ends are weak. The finishing position will depend on how our keys go especially in the forward line. If we have a key that can kick 40+ it will go a long way to knocking on the door. Will really help to bring our brigade of smalls into the game.

Sounds likes 4-5 year old post...but you're right!

6 games down & I'm liking what I'm seeing. Always did think Leppa was the man for the job & the way we are playing doesn't change that view.
the draw really opens up for us for the rest of the year, before the bye we have in order- port, pies, dees, hawks (H), blues, dockers, eagles (H), and the tigers. we have been through the draw from hell but we are out the other side now and in the long term it may have been a good thing to go through ie. we know where we need to get to to be a successful team.

the next 8 rounds to the bye will be very telling IMO, we need to add consistency of effort and if we do i would be hoping that we go to the bye with a record of 5 wins 9 losses at the worst or 7/7 as a best possible outcome.

The club appears to be trending in the right direction in terms of consistency of effort, development of game plan, development of individuals, culture, retention of players but it is way too early to be making any sort of call on whether we were justified in extending his contract.

One thing that can be said is that there hasn't been much heat on Leppa as a coach this year. Whether that is due (in part or in full) to the fact that he got an extension, we'll never really know.

At the end of the day, we all just want to see our club go forward. Whether the contract extension has nothing or everything to do with that will end up being a moot point eventually.

I feel more confident that we have the right coach for now. So many players re-signing is a very good sign, and Lambert wouldn't be securing those signatures if it wasn't for the players believing in the club, coaching and the direction we are going.

We've had a pretty rough draw so far - I'm struggling to think of any other club that has played all top 4 teams in these first 6 rounds. But I think we could see some good things in the next few weeks, especially if they all keep the faith.

Gee I would love some of your positivity. We are still 1 and 5 with a percent of just over 70. I'm not much of an optimist at the best of times, but it is hard for me to see that outcome as a glass half full after 10 out of the past 11 years out of the finals.

Yeah there are lot of reasons for our 1 and 5 start, including a tough draw and the youngest / least experienced list in the league. But I would hardly be breaking out the champagne just yet. From where I sit we have put in 2 really good efforts (Gold Coast and Sydney), 2 half reasonable efforts (West Coast and North), and 2 deplorable efforts (Geelong and the Bulldogs).

Bottom line is that despite the tough nature of our draw, it is far too early to say we have definitely turned the corner and that Leppa is out of the woods in terms of his coaching future. A poor showing over the next few games and all of the sudden we are not far away from a full blown crisis.

Even if we replicate our performance of the first 6 weeks for the full year, it would probably only mean that we win around 6 games for the year (and face another 5 or so shocking games). That may be a slight improvement, but I'm not about to start doing cartwheels.

Having said all that, I understand the hope that we have finally turned the corner as Club off-field and on-field. I hope that really is the case.

What're you talking about we could 9-5 at the bye :D

Despite what perceives to be an onfield improvement, we must still garner an applicable amount of wins if Leppa hopes to avoid scrutiny. I could see 7 wins being the acceptable outcome by season's end, but i would argue that 8 should be the goal of this club. My perception of Leppa so far is that he is a great development coach (similar to McCarthy from the bulldogs) however i just don't see him leading ever leading this club to a premiership.

After every really good effort of the last few years there has been hope that we have "turned the corner." When we start performing consistently well in away games then I will be convinced.

Given consistency is one of the things we are looking to build I am hoping that in the back half of the season we get an opportunity to build that habit. It will be shaky at times but I'll be happy if we can reach Melbourne's lofty heights and win two games in a row.
