Toast Is McVeigh now underrated?

I'm not sure if you can say he's underrated. I felt for most of his career he was a little overrated by opposition supporters.

McVeigh finally started playing to his potential in 2012. 2011 was a poor year from him, and his off-field concerns were obviously impacting his footy (understandably). He seems to be in a better position this year in terms of his personal life, and it's showing on the footy field. I think getting the captaincy was too big a burden last year given his personal circumstances and in hindsight was not ideal, however noone would've known how things would've unfolded for the McVeighs.

I was one of the people who bagged him over the last few years because he wasn't playing to his full potential, but this year I constantly found myself being impressed by his performances. Then I read Kennedys article about the best inside midfielders or whatever, where he mentioned McVeigh had the best hands in close. From that moment I kept noticing how impeccable his disposal was. He had an amazing season, I think in part, due to the fact that our midfield has finally started winning the ball in close, which allows a player like McVeigh to do his best work. from 2007-2010 our midfield was usually getting beaten by the best midfields in the comp, which meant that McVeigh didn't really have an opportunity to work to his strengths.

Other than that, the rest of his game has really improved as well. In the past, he'd consistently miss gettable shots, however this year he's kicked some clutch goals he wouldn't have kicked in previous years.

He's a cool head, with great disposal who makes good decisions and kicks crucial goals. What more can you ask for.

Not enough has been mentioned of the 'Captain's Goal' he kicked to stop the blood letting in the third quarter of the GF. The term is freely used in AFL circles and they should package that goal courtesy of Mitchell and use it as the perfect example. Even after the 50 it was still at an angle from 40m in a tricky breeze which saw just about everybody miss at that end. It came off the boot sweetly and never looked like missing.

Clutch.

PS. BBBBH had one in 2005 from outside 50 as well to get us within a kick after #20's little brain fart, so we've been well served by 'Captains Goals' in GF's...

I was probably guilty of underrating him earlier in the season, but I think now I appreciate just how effective he has been as a leader (although a very different style of leader to Kirky). This has been more than backed up by his actions on the field, particularly his run, his composure when in possession, and ability to kick the goals when needed. It says a lot about his character to bounce back from adversity the way he has.

McVeigh...

Underrated by everyone except myself, Should be seen as the best player in the competition :p

In all honesty though I think he is somewhat underrated... Was overrated for a little bit after he had his original break out year... but for the last two seasons he has been underrated on both this board and opposition supporters.

He isn't underated by the players though, Even Scott Pendlebury said he had the best overall disposal in the competition a while ago.

"A fantastic one-touch player all over the ground by hand and foot. Whether hitting up the leading forward or kicking into the corridor he seems to be able to do it with ease and precision. Might not get a lot of external recognition but is highly rated among rival players."

I thought he was ordinary two years ago to be honest, but now cannot agree more, especially with the last paragraph.

By opposition supporters perhaps, but not opposition coaches nor, I suspect, players. I think Hawthorn may have underrated the team on GF day.

It's possible especially after the first quarter they did. I was more referring to the media regarding underrating the swans

Sensational smother in GF last quarter stopped hawks i50 and resulted in swans goal. Completely knackered his skills stay silky.

20 Macca disposals are worth 30-40 of anyone else's. Not only on target but best option every time. Pops up both ends, must be a bitch to match up on.

The Mexican media always does and I hope they continue to do so. And so do the bookies. A premiers we are still not favourites for next years GF; Hawthorn is. This would seem to indicate that they, or their punters, think the win was a fluke. It was the same after 2005! Mind you winning back to back is relatively rare.

Thanks to the bookies, my flights down for the GF were free! Here's hoping they continue to underate us forever :D

Back on topic, Macca has been in my top 3 fav players for the last 2 years. Whenever he gets the ball, my heart-rate always drops a notch or two.

Absolute gun. Still 5yrs of great footy ahead of him.

Not ashamed to say I was one of his biggest critics. Even less ashamed to say I'm now one of his biggest fans.

Fix your sig and add the adelaide hoodoo as well

Pretty much the whole swans list is underrated apart from Goodes
And even Goodes is still considered an inconsistent flake...even by many Swans fans.

As for McVeigh, I was very surprised when he was made Captain until I heard his inaugural guernsey pres speech and was left in awe. Kirk's "this is the bloods" speech was awesome but McVeigh topped that IMO.
Clear, articulate, believable, passionate, inspiring. I wanted to jump up there and pull on the guernsey. One of the players refers to his GF 3 qtr time huddle on Swans TV (can't remember which...maybe AJ?).
After his incredible personal challenges in 2011, 2012 has been a revelation. Strikes me as a player who will only get better as he gets older.

What, show me the "Goodes inconsistent flake" bashers... Let me at 'em!!

I agree re: maccas speech. If anyone who reads this doesn't know what we're talking about then do yourself a big favour and youtube it, bloody fantastic moment for those boys getting their gurnsey that night. That is how you build a culture. You live it and believe and lead by example. Our captains both do that as good as our past captains have. I'm very proud to hold Macca up there with the Kirkys & Kels of our club as an inspirational and committed leader.

I honestly think McVeigh is about to explode. Seems to be one of those players who get better as they mature into their mid to late 20's. I checked Centrebet for his Charlie odds, and they had him at 201/1. I thought they looked pretty good, i went to the TAB to place a bet, they had him at 1000/1:eek:.

Safe to say i probably lost $20, but 1001/1 is extraordinary value for a player of his calibre. Backs up the OP that he is probaly underrated.

I'd have him right up there for a Brownlow favourite. Imagine if he got a Brownlow before he retired, what a story that would be. He's quite capable of getting one, apparently his off-season has been scary good.

Wouldn't get too ahead of ourselves regarding Brownlow potential and the like.

He's a very good cog in our midfield but he is competing with Kennedy, Jack, ROK, Goodes, Jetta and co. for attention. A tough ask.

And he always has great preseasons. He was a great endurance runner as a junior and has continued to be in the top 3 or 4 every since he arrived at the Swans.

He'd have to go to another level (a level which includes kicking goals more consistently probably) to be any realistic shot at challenging for a Brownlow. Let's just be happy with where he has got to as a player and captain shall we?
