Is Nick Riewoldt deliberately favoured by umpires?

ON YA SAINTS ... 9-0 so much for the carlton and richmond comebacks... face it boys your window has well and truly started and you still suk!! time to rebuild.. AGAIN??:D

This is the part where somebody mentions 26 spoons and one solitary premiership almost 50 years ago. (i guess the DVD is almost ready to be released) :)

as for the OP yes Roo has always had a good run with the umps ...but having said that he doesn't seem to give too many frees away.

Not any more so than any other forward, no.

Works hard to get to every contest first.

First in, best dressed.

Go compare the inside midfielders (selwood, hayes, ball) to the outside ones, i bet i know who had more free kicks.

He's not being favoured. It's not Riewoldt's fault he's THAT GOOD opponents have to resort to unfair tactics against him.

Exactly, Riewoldt earns every free kick he gets. For every lucky free kick he may get, there are plenty of other ones that get missed. Like every other dangerous forward he often gets double or triple teamed with defenders blocking his path or trying to take him out.

The fact that Riewoldt has the speed and aerobic capacity to play in front most of the time also helps. If defenders can't keep up with him they often resort to illegal tactics to hold or block him, which then results in free kicks. So it's not a case of umpires favouring him, more a case of him earning free kicks from his own skill and hard work.

Agree with the general consensus, most of the marks he takes are on the lead in front of his opponent, where it is very difficult for him to infringe. However I will say he does have a bit of a tendency to get under the ball a bit of times which does lend itself to a hands in the back free kick. What he also doesn't do is give away undisciplined free kicks behind the play or out of frustration like a number of other forwards.

I don't think Roo is favoured by the umpires, I just think all the other forwards aren't infringed against as much as he is.

Yes! one must infringe dramatically to attempt to stop such a champion as Roo.

I wonder if this post will be deleted. Hopefully i'm praising enough to appease the forum gods.

I dont think Riewoldt gets too many free kicks, despite what the stats says. I came up with the following reasons why he is leading the free kick count for forwards;

* He is in a winning side, means more inside 50's, more in play contests
* He is the hardest working, leading forward in the league, means he is in front more then any other forward. The umpires trend towards giving free kicks to the player in front more then the one behind.
* He is blonde, big name, high profile, every umpire knows who he is, what he is capable of

These factors lead to a simple conclusion, that he gets more free kicks because he plays in front, works hard and is in a very good football side, and the fact he is a bloody good footballer and the umpires know this.

I dont know if it is deliberate or not, I would say that is highly unlikely.

But if Riewoldt deserves 10 free kicks, he will probably get 9 of them. The other forwards on that list get around 7 of them at the most, some get less.

And thats not even mentioning the ones he doesnt deserve, of which he also gets a shitload more than other forwards.

But oh.....thats because ''he plays in front''. What do other forwards do then?

I love it when an OP is ripped to shreds not by childish retorts, but rational and well-written arguments.

Statistics are meaningless if you don't look at them in context. I hope the OP now understands the context that their quoted statistics exist in.

Also try spoiling a player like roo at full speed on the lead, and in the air. I dont see many defenders that would be able to keep up AND lay a legitimate spoil, its pretty hard to get that high to spoil him without illegal contact being made, and kudos to any defender that can. Virtually the way to spoil him on the lead is to hope that poor delivery makes him slow down.

You really don't think he gets any favourable treatment from umpires? You think his style of game is the only reason behind the massively lopsided stats? If that's the case, Riewoldt is the most unique forward in the history of the game. No other player has ever come close to Riewoldt's free for to against ratio, so I can only assume it's because no one has ever played remotely similar to him. Riewoldt is a pioneer :thumbsu:

Under the current rules. Everyone knows rule changes have hurt the game to some extent. No use comparing to players in other eras, point invalid.

Hmmm lets see about that....

NO - All reiwoldt is IS the BEST CHF in the league.

Seriously how good is this kid???

Best captain... most courageous player in the leaugue no mark he wouldnt go for.

How many of those 238 would have been a trademark Lloyd dive?

I'm guessing well over 100.

FFS - Bay 13.

Its a bit rich for a bummer supporter to be trolling about umpire favouritism, when 90% of the free kicks that Lloyd receives is when he goes into his customary swan dive with that stupid startled squirrel look on his face.
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

As for the OP....valid and lopsided statistics were used to pose a question....The ''context'' you speak of is very much up for debate.

This is just sad now Essendon fans. Try to move on with your lives. Accept facts..... Lloyd is just not liked. Riewoldt is.
Oh, and Riewoldt >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Diving fishfaced Highpants
