Is North Melbourne passing on Logan McDonald going to be the 2021 version of the Bulldogs passing on Buddy for Ryan Griffin

It’s an interesting one.

Swans fans on bigfooty at least, don’t seem particularly excited/focused on him.

His thread is page 3 on the swans board, without a post since early Nov. most players have been discussed in their threads since then. Seems strange for a pick 4 KPF entering his second year.

How’s he going?

Perhaps we realise he’s a KPF and they are rarely ready Year 1. We didn’t even have to as we were contending last year. He’ll eventually take over from Franklin but why do we need to rush him. I’d trust our development over most clubs it’s rare we get these things wrong

I’m not saying he should have played more, isnt developing well, or making any comment on his ability/prospects.

I’m just saying that i find it odd that swans fans haven’t bumped his thread on their board since nov 5.

Edit: how’s his preseason been? I went to your board to read up but couldn’t find any info.

Neither are inside mids like Phillips.

Grainger-Barras is probably the one they could have done with more. They are well stocked with mids. Put him alongside McKay and their KPD's are set for the next 6-7 years
Gun.
By consensus most had McDonald ahead of him on their board, hence this thread

This is a fair shout. DGB looks very promosing.

At the time, i must admit, i went nuts when we didnt take Mcdonald, however I'm more and more comfortable with it now. Especially with Larkey having a very good 2021.

I must admit I was initially critical of North on this one.

The appeal of gun tall prospects at the top of draft is really hard to turn down, but apart from that I just didn't like North's reasoning that they had a plan to draft midfielders first and then add talls later.

To me the only consideration with an early pick is to get the absolute best player you can. That's how you maximise the value of the pick and anything after that is just noise.

Looking at it now with a bit more time and also with North's list progressing I can see they have good confidence in Larkey as the number 1 and have been able to add supportive ruck/forward types to bolster around him.

I guess I still have my doubts on Phillips given he does seem rather vanilla for such an early pick and especially with North having Simpkin, LDU, Thomas and then adding Powell. It goes against my philosophy of taking the best player possible with the highest pick but I do wonder if North had great confidence they would get Powell and that's he'd do very well if they'd think about more of a risk with the Phillips pick. DGB, Perkins, Hollands, Cox or Reid might've been the upside picks if they were comfortable with their plan around Larkey.

There's also the reality that now they've added JHF the hybrid guys like Perkins and Hollands don't appeal as much and maybe a rock solid midfielder who can do a team role is perfect for them.

I’d be a lot more uncomfortable with Hollands or Reid at the moment, especially the latter who barely played last year and now has stress fractures in his back and is out for the foreseeable future. When you add Covid he might miss the best part of 3-4 seasons of football.

He’ll be playing R1, pre season has been really good from all reports. This was sort of the plan all along, give him a taste last year but he’ll ply the majority this year leading to him leading the forward structure when Bud retires

This is an interesting and valid point.

He's not a physical freak type Big Midfielder.

But have a watch of the first two goals there. It will take you 30 seconds.

Phillips is involved in both but it is the second one starting at 0.26 that's most interesting. The patience and belief he has in himself in what was his 12th game or so, and his ability to wait and wait for the right option, then deliver Larkey an essentially unspoilable pass to 20m directly in front (with Weitering as his direct opponent) is why he went so high.

If he and Larkey can keep that kind of mid - KPF understanding up for another 250 games, we're in a very very good spot.

Nick Larkey is 23 and just had a 42 goal season for a rebuilding side. It's not liek north are sending undersized KPDs forward to 'create a contest' because nobody else is there.
RCD/Comden as a partner is not a bad combo to start with

If North didn't have Larkey I think this debate would look fairly different.

I can say we decided that we would build our midfield as the number 1 priority. Rotate as many as we can through there. Whether that works out as we hope , well time will tell.

But it is refreshing that we have a plan. Yes correct we have Larkey, Edwards, Comben, Xerri, Goldy and CCJ. So yes I'm happy with our fwd options

It’ll be interesting to see how this works out in a few years. I wonder if north would have gone McDonald if they’d known JHF was coming in.
yeah I think so, they're very different players. I think the main reason North passed on McDonald was that they had a lot of faith in Larkey and Comben to come good. So far we've got 1/2 there.

Larkey is the man at North, no doubt. A brilliant piece of drafting getting him so late in his draft too.

Comben, CCJ and Edwards all in the mix over the next few years too. North are okay for talls now.

And who knows, Harry Mckay is a free agent in 18 months too.

That 2016 Draft had a really long tail didn't it!

52 Willie Rioli
53 Jack Graham
57 Josh Daicos
66 Luke Ryan
73 Nick Larkey
76 Mitch Lewis

Rookie draft ran hard too:

1: Draper
6: Stengle
9. Ladhams
10. Marshall
11. Zuurhaar.
16. Jack Henry
33: Zach Gutherie
37: Oscar McInerney

Weird thread to bump going off some pre season form. Thought mcdonald couldn't have done much more as a underdeveloped key forward learning to play on the scg.

Isn't just pre season form.

You do know Phillips had his development years ruined by COVID?

Carlton, Essendon and St Kilda are also responsible. Be grateful and bow your heads when you talk about your lords and saviours.

That one isn't the full quid.

Really?

He is worth more than that.

I would be expecting West coasts first pick (top 5) for Mcdonald and steak knives.

It was sarcasm.

Sydney would demand a King's ransom for McDonald.

I'm expecting for McDonald to sign a new contract sometime over the next few months (understand the delay, his manager would be an idiot to rush a new contract, especially if he comes back into the team and has some strong performances in the first few months).
