Is North Melbourne passing on Logan McDonald going to be the 2021 version of the Bulldogs passing on Buddy for Ryan Griffin

It was madness then ,and madness now.
Midfielders are a dime a dozen and power forwards are hard to come by.
Not really. CJ was an easy get. So was Jacob Edwards at the mid-season draft.

We've got four promising young key forwards and a couple of mid-sizers who play tall. That's heaps.

We need another young KPD or two, but picking Phillips over McDonald looks fine to me.

not sure it's top 5.

1) Tambling over Buddy
2) Scully/Trengove over Dusty
3) McCartin over Petracca
4) Ariel Steinberg over Luke Parker
5) Dow at 3 not looking pretty either.

Not even the worse of 2020.
Bruhn over any other player who might hang around for more than 2 years.
We took Jackson Thurlow 2 picks ahead of Brodie Grundy.. Considering we haven’t had a decent ruck since Ottens smh

CCJones was not an easy get. It is rare for a player to be developed for years and then walk out on the club.
You only got him because you had the threat of the number one pick in the pre-season draft and threw a big money contract at him.
When Logan was passed up I had the same feeling when Melbourne took Jack Watts before Nic Nat.
It shouldn't hurt you too much though as you will be getting very high picks for years to come.

Na. We got CJ because he'd rather be at our club than yours.

He's a very good player but is a very disruptive influence on the younger players.
Remember he escaped the bubble ,got drunk and got into a fight and led Sydney Stack astray.
Keep him away from Horne-Smith and the other rookies.

KPP players are a lot more valuable BUT are more hit & miss in the draft.

Injury aside, you are guaranteed a gun midfield player in the top three. The safe move was Phillips but the player with the more upside is McDonald.
Also, as OP stated, Phillips is player you can find easier through trade/mid draft if required later on down the track if needed.

All things considered, you should go the KPP instead of the mid.
You should go the bloke most likely to be a top player. Both tracked okay without really exciting last year.

But in terms of going with the KPP ahead of the mid, if you look at the really early picks in retrospective drafts, how often would you have been better off with the KPP? - not that often I think. I think Buddy is the last time a KPP was the best player drafted in their year.

If you look at the abundance that North have drafted outside Phillips, this decision is still puzzling.

I was at the intra club today and without Cunners and Anderson it was completley obvious why we drafted him.

He's matured now he's away from the Real Housewives of Richmond reality TV show drama culture at Punt Road.

He's 22. He is one of the younger players.

He was very good in the intra club today, its an intra club at the bottom side I know, but he and Comben really change and improve our structure.

I understand we didn't know we'd get him when we took WP (who was very classy today) over McDonald, but Jacob Edwards falling in our lap really means this thread is redundant.

Only behind Darcy as a true fwd/ruck type if he went in the 2021 draft imo.

Always go the best player available in with a top 10 pick.

McDonald showed great promise in his first season. Breaking into a top eight teams lineup especially as a tall in your first year is a great effort. Hard to say he will be a gun from his first year but the signs have been promising.

Hopefully Philips lives up to his ranking by North as the third best player in the draft. Mids generally take less time to impact than talls, but the Roos obviously thought that he had immense talent when they overlooked the talls at this pick.

He's such a disruptive influence and of bad character that of all people, Noble picked CCJ to be JHF's housemate.

Richmond's once vaunted culture died when Dimma did the dirty on Mrs Hardwick.

CCJ wise to escape

There's certainly been alot of non-reproducable situations in recent years then and I'm not even including ruckman:

Jake Lever
Stephen May
Jesse Hogan x2
Brian Lake
Josh Gibson
Alex Keath
Joe Danniher
James Frawley
Lance Franklin
Adam Tomlinson
Tom Lynch
Tom Boyd
Charlie Dixon
Lachie Henderson
Jeremy Howe
Jake Carlisle
Jarrad Waite
Josh Kennedy
Ben Brown
Robbie Tarrant
Chris Tarrant
Troy Chaplin
Mitch Clark
Barry Hall
Brendan Fevola

As you said, we have 23 year old book ends that aren't exactly mugs and Comben may be better than both of them. I think people easily overlook the fact we picked up a tall kid who was touted to have slipped into around pick 6-15 in the draft had he been there and we hadn't selected him in midseason draft also.

Our rebuild isn't over and our recruiters have specifically nominated this year as having some talls they like.

The above list is an indication, in most cases, key position players are gettable on the market, especially for contending sides.

This is my point, there's so many non-reproducile events it is obvious these situations will keep emerging.

Says a lot of about the ego driven toxic cesspit Richmond has become.

You can see why Tarryn Thomas knocked you back too.

I can't agree with that, plus we never tank for the draft

You didn't needed to try to be crap for a long time.

Smartarsery aside, I'm amazed Richmond let CCJ go.

Watching him today, he's going to be a good AFL player, our set up will work well for him and get gets to learn from Goldy.

But jeez, there has to be a backstory.

You only got him because we are a triple premiership team with salary cap pressure and you are a perennial cellar dweller with cash to spare.
You also had to promise to play him in his choice of position which is unheard of.
