So we play like trash and kick a billion behinds against the Pies (who will win the flag) and lose by only 7 points yet apparently our flag window is shut?

We've got a great draft hand this year which will replenish the list a lot.
If the Pies game was a one off with poor kicking then you’d have a point but it’s an endemic issue in the team.

Again, hope you’re correct but this side continues to be good enough to beat everyone and dumb enough to lose to anyone.

That's the competition though. It's tight. I'd rather be a team with high upside. I rate us at the 2nd best team in the comp behind the pies. And they're extremely beatable.

We always "just lose" , thats the game plan, turn every game into a 50/50.... Just losing to the Pies means nothing until we show we can kick scores and put good teams to the sword when we have momentum.. We have zero fear factor as it stands.

Guys, let's be honest, we're a top 4 team and there's 4 clear stand outs (Us, pies, bris and port). It will be the same next season. Dees have a competitive advantage over the other teams because we have a great draft hand with picks 5, 14, 24, and 34. Nail those picks picks and it breaths so much fresh air into the team. Let's go to the draft with all 4 picks and hope that Jefferson can put on 10kg in the off-season :)

If Grundy goes to Sydney do you guys want to get a player from them or draft picks

Still being in the window (I dont think its a question of whether you are or not) with one of the most talented midfields in the competition would you want to use it for a ready to go forward. Might not be a Sydney player as it could be done with 3 way trade.

We'll take Shai Bolton then.

I think it's pretty evident to everyone that a ready made key forward would be a god send, but realistically we're not prying any of Sydneys out for Grundy. Even if we sweeten the deal with picks they'd be crazy to give up one of Amartey, McDonald, Mclean as far as I'm concerned.

We absolutely need to look to move some of our picks for one if we wish to compete next year, really not sure who is gettable that could do a job for us.

the problem is we cant failing in the same way and are tethered to the same loser coach for the next two years.

Doesnt matter who you draft or trade when you have a perennial loser of a coach

We'll just have to see it out to its logical endpoint now, where we start to completely bottom out like the Bulldogs.

I have no doubt that if we keep losing finals the board will happily keep extending him

If May drops off even slightly next year this group is completely ****ed. He single handedly dominated Curnow and kept us in the game. He drops away and we are losing those games by 20-30 points. The only bloke who can fill in for his job is our saviour KF next season.

We need to hope May can play another 2 good years, hold onto Tomlinson in case, and find a replacement ASAP.

Because if May falls away and Tomo goes, we're completely ****ed.

Imagine having to move Petty back and putting Lever on the second KPF. Yikes.

Fix our dogshit, stodgy, move it slow and bomb it in boring game style and we might be able to retool.

Yep.

We need a coach willing to be maybe more adventurous with the mids and forwards. We have most of the pieces. The trading Oliver suggestion is quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Hey, let's trade our best player so we can bring in picks which might get us good young players to help us in 5 years time! Wtf!? Our window is now. Petty and Melksham stay fit we'd be sitting waiting in a prelim.

It's also a case of just being unlucky. Hitting posts. Giving away 50s at important moments. Injuries to Petty and Melk. 32 more inside 50s in the QF then 9.17 in the SF. Still should have won both. Did we try Salem forward? Riv as a permanent mid? Koz out of the goalsquare? Bowey more forward? Woey as a running defender? Maybe we should have rested our stars more throughout the year. There's lots of things we could have tried but really didn't because the coach is too rigid. Get a couple of pieces, a change of forward coach and a couple of high end kids and off we go again.

I'd love McLean or Amartey. Both would be ideal. We'd probably have to throw in a decent pick to go along with Grundy though and I doubt both are even gettable. But I hope we're having a crack. Even Stephens who seems available could be a good option.

Think Amartey and McLean both resigned this year so aren't going anywhere.

Tell me the last time we kicked a goal like this, when that ball gets to 50 we just bomb it to the square.
Its why we kick 4 goals a bloody game
Vid is time coded to the moment

Reminds me of 2018 so fitting Hogan was the one getting on the end of it. Giants are basically 2018 us with a backline, that's pretty scary.

Yeah and we are like Sydney 2006 Trying to play in 2023 with shitter players

These two plays one after the other are almost identical:

If Tomo is gone or banished I think we should play Petty back. I don't think Petty is our saviour forward at all.

Grundy was a big unconventional endeavour that didn’t pay off. Could have been unbeatable if it worked out but clearly it didn’t.

We will get compensated for his departure and McAdam added to the forward line. Nailing the plethora of early draft picks will be crucial for what’s next.

A top 4 team getting knocked out in straight sets back to back? Surely that gets rectified next season.

I thought we were a chance of a Bradbury-type flag this year, papering over obvious cracks. There hasn't been a true stand-out team in the competition, and at our best we're as good as Collingwood or Brisbane have been.

But clearly there are some serious issues here which make me think the window is shut as I reflect on the season.

1. List depth - With TMac, BBB, Harmes falling off a cliff, Grundy & Jordon (and Harmes) likely leaving, Pig retiring, Melky either delisted or out til July, Dunstan gone, Tomo apparently wanting out, we have very little AFL-ready depth running around at Casey. We are relying on minimum 3 of DTurner, Woey, Laurie, Howes, Sestan et al developing to be up to the level. Jury's out.
2. Execution & Fortitude - Hard to know how much of the reverting to poor habits is direction and how much is lack of skill and ability. Goalkicking in the last fortnight highlights a lack of ability to step up and retain composure in the big moments. What's happening between the ears ont he big stage?
3. Leadership & Direction - Clearly there are some issues with the gameplan and the communications from Goody, regardless as to whether the execution is letting us down. We can all see it and we are also all sick of his message and the way he delivers it. I have some concerns about the load Max is carrying and his ability to bring his teammates along with him too. I always resented him releasig the Premiership Diary so quickly after 21 and thought he divulged too much. Listening to the podcast, he clearly has a tonne of self-belief and while it is tongue-in-cheek, he rates himself. He's also happy to pot others even in jest. I just wonder whether he is the leader who will bring the next level out of the group. Maybe he needs more aroudn him. Is it asking too much for Trac to step up into a formal leadership role, and/or Lever? I've also always hated the "we haven't won at the MCG so 21 didn't mean as much" narrative, which is admirable coming from the players but IMO misguided. I have never been happier about a game of footy as the 21 flag, watching from home. We finally ****ing won one and we were finally ****ing relevant.

To keep our window open, we need to see a creative draft & trade period with a minimum of 3 players added to the list who can have an impact in Round 1, 2024. And I'd like to see some variance to our coaching and leadership structures.

Reading back over the Grundy situation, it really is quite extraordinary that we went and got Grundy on Max’s self-declaration he was going to play full forward 70%.

He declared himself our forward saviour so the real cost wasn’t getting Grundy and not using him effectively it was assuming we didn’t need to trade for other forwards because Max was going to do it.
