Is there a better club than Carlton at selecting number 1 draft picks?

You think with Carlton's wooden spoon experience over the last 10 years that they would be good at it. I guess theres always 2011 spoon to have another go......oh wait GWS get the first few picks. 2012?

To stay in context, Is there a better club than Carlton at attaining no1 draft picks, or in laymans terms, have there been any teams in recent times to finish last more often than Carlton?

I dont even think we need to go to the books to answer that one.

Our players will lead us to a flag, yours can't lead you past a Prelim. Plus ours are younger therefore more scope for improvement.

Apart from eveyone else laughing at this statement, this can only be possible if yours are any good to begin with.

End of discussion.

Start of alienation, as Marx so cleverly put it...

LOL Sydney, I think you guys would 'pass' if ever faced with a number 1 pick again. Darren Gaspar, spud who moved to Richmond after 2 years and won their b&f:eek: Sydney - league's worst drafters.
Haha just saw this. You're bringing up a pick in the 93 draft, we all know that's a shit argument - AFL drafting didn't even start becoming important to clubs until the late 90s.

Let's have a look at Carlton's top 3 picks from then onwards...

* = Less than 3 picks in the top 60

1997
Pick 7 - Kris Massie
Could've had Chris Tarrant, Chad Cornes, Shane O'Bree
Pick 23 - Adam Chatfield
Could've had Simon Black, Adam Goodes, Nick Stevens (got him anyway when he was shit).
Pick 55 - Craig Black
Could've had Nathan Brown, Phil Read, Andrew Kellaway

1998*
Pick 6 - Murray Vance :p
Could've had Josh Carr, Jude Bolton, Mark McVeigh, Brady Rawlings, Brett Burton, David Wojcinski, Steven Baker, Tyson Stenglein, Craig Bolton or Andrew Embley.
Pick 38 - Brendan Fevola (I'll give you that one, he served you guys well)

1999*
Traded your top 3 picks (16, 31, 46) for Michael Mansfield & Stephen O'Reilly
Could've had Brad Green, Daniel Giansiracusa, Paul Chapman, Cameron Ling, Corey Enright, Lindsay Gilbee, Chance Bateman, Ryan O'Keefe, Leon Davis, David Hille, Jason Blake, Paul Wheatley, Matthew Whelan, Scott Stevens or Mitch Hahn.
Pick 60 - Richard Kelly
Could've had Cameron Bruce, Ben Johnson, Matthew Burton or Robert Shirley.

2000
Traded Aaron Hamill for Sam Cranage & pick 4 (Luke Livingston)
Pick 11 - Trent Sporn :p
Pick 15 - Simon Wiggins
Pick 46 - Sean O'Keefe
In a draft (after pick 4) boasting Shaun Burgoyne, Scott Thompson, Kane Cornes, Daniel Kerr, Drew Petrie, Dom Cassisi, Daniel Cross & Graham Johncock.

2001*
Traded your top 3 draft picks (14, 23, 30) for Corey McKernan & Justin Murphy (again)
Could've had James Kelly, Jason Gram, Leigh Montagna, Sam Mitchell, Campbell Brown, David Rodan, Dane Swan, Adam Schneider, Brian Lake, Mark Seaby or Andrew Welsh.

2002*
After Jack Elliot was found out and you lost both Wells and Goddard, you then traded your only pick in the top 60 (pick 16 - Stephen Gilham) for Barnaby French.

2003*
Traded Justin Murphy & Simon Beaumont for David Clarke & Cory McGrath
Traded Corey McKernan back to North for Digby Morrell.
Pick 2 - Andrew Walker
Could've had Colin Sylvia, Beau Waters, Brent Stanton, Troy Chaplin, David Mundy or Jed Adcock.

2004
Pick 9 - Jordan Russell (he's finally come good)
Pick 25 - Adam Hartlett
Pick 41 - Luke Blackwell
Could've had Nathan Van Berlo, Mark LeCras, Angus Monfries, Jarred Moore, Matthew Bate, Chris Knights or Justin Sherman.

2005
Pick 1 - Marc Murphy
Could've had Scott Pendlebury.
Pick 4 - Josh Kennedy (GAAAAWN. Did nothing for you lot, now doing wonders in the West)
Could've had Scott Pendlebury, Paddy Ryder, Shaun Higgins or Trav Varcoe.
Pick 20 - Paul Bower (Gets monstered every week)
Could've had Bernie Vince, Sam Gilbert, Andrew Swallow, Mathew Stokes or Alipate Carlile.

2006
Pick 1 - Bryce Gibbs
Could've had Joel Selwood or Jack Riewoldt.
Pick 17 - Shaun Hampson (your fifth ruckman)
Pick 19 - Shaun Grigg (GAAAAWN)
Could've had Kurt Tippett, Ricky Petterd, Alwyn Davey, Chris Dawes, Colin Garland or Tyson Goldsack.

2007*
Traded your best young player and picks 3 & 20 for a money-hunting mincehead.
Traded your 3rd rounder for Richard Hadley.
Pick 1 - Matthew Kruezer (will be a gun, good pick)

2008*
Traded picks 24, 56 and 72 for Rob Warnock
Pick 6 - Chris Yarran :p
Could've had Daniel Rich, Jack Ziebell, Steele Sidebotton, Hayden Ballantyne, Nic Suban, David Zaharakis or Dayne Beams.

The 2009 & 2010 drafts are far too recent to judge.

TBH IMO you guys are on par with Freo in regards to your drafting & trading.

Oh and FWIW, here are some of Sydney's monumental f***ups on draft day.....

1997
Pick 43 - Adam Goodes

1998
Rookie Draft - Brett Kirk

1999
Pick 56 - Ryan O'Keefe

2001
Pick 60 - Adam Schneider

2002
Pick 64 - Nick Malceski

2004
Rookie Draft pick 41 - Paul Bevan

2005
Rookie Draft pick 57 - Kieren Jack

2006
Pick 79 - Jesse White
Rookie Draft pick 15 - Nick Smith

2008
Pick 30 - Dan Hannebery
Rookie Draft pick 57 - Mike Pyke

Also, like you guys, we put more of an emphasis on trading our picks, but unlike you, we do it well and churn out Josh Kennedy, Shane Mumford & Ben McGlynn types whereas you guys end up with Digby Morrell, Callum Chambers & Troy Longmuir types.

SS ;)

Top post sad but true for Carlton. Every player we have traded to Sydney in the last 15 years has been a very good player including:
Andrew Schauble B&F
Paul Williams B&F
Nick Davis got them into the GF they won
Rhys Shaw playing good football

Probabaly the best team around for recognizing recycled talent and developing it. Unlike Carlton.

LOL drafting wasn't important until the late 90s? Bizarre comment, you'd think that selecting the group of guys who play for your club would be extremely important. lol...speaking of shit arguments:eek:

Let's have a look at Carlton's top 3 picks from then onwards...

lets not, thread is about #1 picks. don't try and deflect by broadening the horizons.

2005
Pick 1 - Marc Murphy
Could've had Scott Pendlebury.
Pick 4 - Josh Kennedy (GAAAAWN. Did nothing for you lot, now doing wonders in the West)
Could've had Scott Pendlebury, Paddy Ryder, Shaun Higgins or Trav Varcoe.
Pick 20 - Paul Bower (Gets monstered every week)
Could've had Bernie Vince, Sam Gilbert, Andrew Swallow, Mathew Stokes or Alipate Carlile.

Murphy > Ryder, Huggins & Varcoe. laughable that you'd even bring them up. Pendlebury is a fair comparison but is only made to look good because he's in a premiership side. He's a Overrated ball butcher TBH.

2006
Pick 1 - Bryce Gibbs
Could've had Joel Selwood or Jack Riewoldt.
Pick 17 - Shaun Hampson (your fifth ruckman)
Pick 19 - Shaun Grigg (GAAAAWN)
Could've had Kurt Tippett, Ricky Petterd, Alwyn Davey, Chris Dawes, Colin Garland or Tyson Goldsack.

LOL jack riewoldt? the guy who only won a coleman because of lack of other genuine forwards ala Fevola in 2009? Jack is good for taking a decent mark but thats about it. shines in a shit team, would struggle to break into a top 8 side. Joel Selwood is a serial head-ducker who like Pendlebury is made to look more impressive by those around him. Gibbs has the cleanest disposal out of anyone in that draft and is also slick in traffic. great pick up:thumbsu:

2007*
Traded your best young player and picks 3 & 20 for a money-hunting mincehead.
Traded your 3rd rounder for Richard Hadley.
Pick 1 - Matthew Kruezer (will be a gun, good pick)

money hunting mincehead OR reigning brownlow medallist & best midfielder in the league? We call him different things. Good to see you agree on Kreuzer, maybe you aren't a toolbox after all.

We didn't have number 1 picks from 08-10, not even a top 3 pick. bizarre you would even include this years in your post.

Also, like you guys, we put more of an emphasis on trading our picks, but unlike you, we do it well and churn out Josh Kennedy, Shane Mumford & Ben McGlynn types whereas you guys end up with Digby Morrell, Callum Chambers & Troy Longmuir types.

Chris Judd & Brock McLean say hey.

Ones in bold, still can't believe they all got passed up. All, bar Kirk, are established first-team players.
And had to have a lulz at 2006 PS Draft- Pick 1, Carlton- Cain Ackland. :p
Swans = masters of rookie listing players and turning them into starting 22 players (Grundy, Jack, Bevan, Kirk, Smith and Pyke), and of course the masters of Trade Week.

Unlike Lolton, Andrew Walker at pick 2!!! You could have easily have had Rischitelli, Ben Hudson, Sam Fisher, Buchanan, Adcock, Mundy, Waters, Sylvia or Surjan. But took Crapkar instead who turned out to be a spud.

Carlton have had more practice at it than most.

Thats really funny, almost as funny as when someone already said that same shit on page 3 you repetetive scum.

After reading all the posts in this thread i have come to the conclusion that Brownlow-Judd needs to join Ricky Nixon in rehab serious what DRUGS are you on.Carlton have drafted 1 good(great)player in the past 10 years and thats Judd even then you payed 5 mill for his signature........

Except they didn't draft Judd, they traded for him.

So I guess that makes it zero, zilch, nada.

Thing is, they had the perfect opportunity to make up for their midfield drafting blunders on Murphy and Squibbs, but then they went and picked Kreuzer over Cotchin. Ouch
