Is there one loss that hurts more than any other?

I never re-watch any of our losses - have recorded this year's EF on IQ but am about to delete it unwatched. I try to blot out 97 and 98 from my memory bank, 97 overwhelmingly the worst. This year's game v Aints when Clay went down was fairly painful.

97 by a country mile, however 98 has a special place in my hate bank due to the F%*^&^ Crows supporters chanting "we're in the final", clap, clap, clap, we're in the final" over and over again in the last quarter when the game was in the bag. I hate you Adelaide!.

I haven't seen this years final at all either. Was out on the night and recorded it. Deleted it as soon as I got home.

I despise their club song ever since that day, every time I hear it I'm taken back to 97.

As a 9yo I cried after 97

Looking back on 97 as a whole though, we were inconsistent at the best of times and were flogged by finalists like Adelaide and Sydney for etc and blew an 8 goal lead to Port and lost (we had a horrible percentage that year) and it was no surprise Adelaide won the flag that season as they were among the best teams statistically that season even though they went in September finishing 4th from 13-9, pretty sure they had the best defence that year also.

09 I walked out of the G absolutely raging, another missed opportunity. Kicking 2.6 in the first quarter was the main reason why we lost that night, not Divewoldt or the umpires. Probably 09 for me.

Must get our recruiting and development spot on the next couple of years so we don't waste another opportunity if we make another prelim in that time.

98 got me good.
I thought it was our shot at revenge and we capitulated.
Sitting dejected in the stands for 4 quarters hurt more than the last quarter of 97.

97 stands out for me, partly because it was the first final series for my kids who were 8, 12 and 14. Plus the factors that we pissed away a huge lead and would have been in with a good show against the Saints.

the loss this year against st kilda

because it's been brought up 1000 times already & most of those by Nathan Schmuck
I'm going to be looking forward to analysing the rubbish he spouts next year :p

We stopped running in the last 10-15 minutes of that game, they had so much drive out of their back half and they had an open forward line to work with. I've watched the last quarter once or twice, plus Grant and Hudson making a meal of it 5 metres out in the dying stages.

If only Wallace had invented flooding 3 years earlier then perhaps we may have hung on

1. 1997...gut wrenching. I have watched it back and re-lived the pain. God we had some chances in that last quarter. Missed goals, dropped marks (even Grant dropped a chest mark)....so so painful.

2. 2009...distraught in '97 but enraged in 2009. Walked out of the gorund to be confronted by Matt Thompson from SEN with a microphone. Really struggled to control my rage but managed to asy something remotely articulate. So many disgraceful umpiring decisions that night.....mostly by McInerney. I detest him to this day.

3. 1998...the Robran v Bubba and McLeod v Libba match. We just never looked like it after beating Westcoast convincingly in the first final.

4. 1994...we didn't have a great team but to hit the front with seconds to spare only to see Brownless kick the winning goal after the siren was horrific. I hate him so much every time that goal is replayed.

1997 was the worst easily.

A while back I was on YouTube and found the game. Having never watched the game, I thought to myself, "It's done, buried, ancient history, nothing you can do can change the result" and began to watch it.

I lasted about a minute. Just felt sick remembering all those missed chances in the last (Mark West, Libba's point, James Cook missing a sitter after kicking 6-7), the dread every time Adelaide went forward, Jarman seemingly unstoppable, Chris Grant squeezing through that last point

This is 18 years later.

2009.. Blew it in the 1st qtr kicking 2.5 and then had 6 of their 9 goals coming directly or indirectly from free kicks... I don't think i'll get over this one.

1997 was a hard one as Adelaide were extremely wasteful early on and just kept on coming.. We made some terrible decisions late in the match and the lack of adjustment from the coaching team was extremely frustrating... But if Libba goals, or Mark West goals, or if one of Grant & Huddo shephard we win.. Simple.

For those who say we were never in the 1998 game are incorrect, if Grant kicks the goal from 30m straight in front early in the 3rd (instead of fluffing a handball to Huddo) we get to with 2 goals and have all the momentum.. It blew out from that point on.

I also forgot how good Quinlan was for the Lions that year. Imagine how good we would have been if we hadn't had to sell him to cover our debts.
Grew an extra leg after he left us

The 1997 prelim by a mile.

I can still remember sitting in the grandstand at three quarter time worrying about how hard it was going to be to get GF tickets for the whole family. Then sitting in the grandstand at full time thinking "oh the humanity" (historical reference - you had to be there)

It was so painful because we were clearly good enough to win and should have won.

I remember my best best friend at the time crying after the game (yes, grown men do cry). I remember being abused by Adelaide fans while leaving and I remember the silence for the ride back on the Dandenong line on the train. I also remember the incredibly hollow and devastating feeling of being so very close.

For me 1997 is a fire that still burns and is the reason I hate Adelaide (and their fans) with a passion.

DITTO !

One difference is I genuinely believe we were robbed in 2009. 1997 we blew it of our own accord :( 1997 was a worse loss because of the lead but 2009 was just as painful, partially because it was another 12 years without getting past the prelims.

I agree and disagree with this.

Agree in that the umpiring was patently rubbish. Every neutral observer of that game that I have spoken to agrees that we were very harshly treated.

But at the same time, if we'd kicked straight we would have won and the rubbish umpiring would have been irrelevant. We could have been 5 goals up at quarter time. Gilbee had an easy shot in the last that would have put us a couple of goals in front - given it was a low scoring game that would have been huge.
