Don’t want to get bogged down by simplistic things like “ sack the coach , Kochie and Kieth “
That’s what we’ve got . What do we need to do to go the next level .
Personally I think we’ve been a little short on class in the midfield for a while .
Also I think because we have a major fear of bottoming right out so in our haste to be a contender every year , we’ve panic bought a bit and only last year really went back to the draft . It’s a fine balance the trades or the drafts. But I think we suffer a bit in attracting players to S.A and we’ve grabbed who could rather than who we should .
Also as much as the aboriginal academy is great for the kids our aboriginal players haven’t thrived here of late so some thought needs to go into something there . I’d be looking at offering Shaun B a job as soon as he’s finished playing .
We seem to change the game plan a lot so I’d be trying to get it right and keep it tight.
A team like Richmond and all premiership teams for that matter you can see they move as one , especially from defence .
Also big nowadays is having marking defenders , . Clurey is pretty good . Howard needs to be the other if he stays otherwise it’ll have to be Watts because Jonas is more of a spoiler.
Westhoff is the other one I guess .
A KPD in the draft is probably a good idea.
Anyway I’d just like a thread where we can offer tactical or cultural ideas and thoughts

Every area has the potential to improve and be better. Do one thing better. Then do one more. Don't post dumb shit on social media. Don't say dumb shit in interviews. Stick with 1 captain and back him in 100%. Select the best players available for games. Play the percentages. Live the creed.

I keep saying this but get a genuine forward coach who can work with the midfield coaches in transitioning the ball into the F50.

Agree with the need for some more class around the ball and also some additional pace forward and around the ground.

A fit Watts in defence to distribute the ball will be handy.

Lock key forwards into positions and build some continuity.

Give some players the key to the weights room, coughMarshallcough.

Keep working on the across the ground defence which was a focus last year.

Put trust in the young guys in the Magpies who showed development this season past. Conversely don't be too hung up on older players who aren't at the level and never will be.

A simple forward structure which includes a couple key forwards who actually lead too the ball and improvement in footskills and composure across the park and suddenly we could resemble something of a decent side

Seems so simple, yet for basically a decade we haven’t managed to achieve it

I think if one of Duursma/Butters can become that classy 20/25 disposals a game midfielder we need that’d go a huge way towards improving us as a team. We need Marshall to have a huge preseason and show us what he’s made of next year. They also really need to nail Doogs down to one position (hopefully back cause Clurey is crying out for quality support) and have him master it.

We need some higher IQ types in the front half. A key forward who leads up at the ball would transform our side. With a prime Jay Schulz our skill level wouldn’t look half as bad.

We also need to get some more leg speed into our best 22. Our best players a slow which isn’t ideal. Adding more slow fringe players in S. Gray, Broadbent and Ryder clearly doesn’t work. Reassuringly the list management team seem to see this even if the coach doesn’t.

Fantasia?

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy(a)?

He’s yet to kick 40 goals in a season, or average 2 goals per game for that matter. He might be capable but it’s really just a gamble at this point.

We had someone who has done it on multiple occasions but we killed that man.

Sorting the forward line is obvious, but ultimately we just need to be capable as a club of making difficult decisions.

Accountability is everything and we're terrible at it.

I think Kochie genuinely believes his warm and fuzzy cuddles for everyone (except Wingard) leadership style will result in a happy workplace and happy workers are hard workers. Unfortunately, unlike most workplaces, a football club has enormous external pressure to succeed. Imagine every shareholder of a large private company sitting and watching people work every day.

I think he's generally achieved the first part. Our players are happy, and our coaches are happy. What has finally made life a bit difficult for them is the external public pressure.

We operate like a government department, where there are plenty of competent hardworking individuals but there are also plenty of rusted on potatoes that should have been moved on years ago, but it's too difficult to properly performance manage anyone so a huge portion of the workforce is well past their used by date. We're in a cutthroat industry where other clubs are simply better than us at running a football club, and better than us at getting rid of the no-hopers. We're the worst team at it in the league.

Koch is probably capable of being a lot more of a ruthless bastard than he is. I'm hoping he realises that letting people get away with weak, lazy work is destroying his legacy as a football administrator. If he could flick that switch and start to really crack some skulls behind closed doors, we might start to see some of that accountability flow through to the team on field.

We get enough of the ball but the midfield balance is wrong. Needs to be at least 1 more player in the rotation (on match day) who can kick and probably 2 who can break lines with either or both of leg speed and evasion. Without improved delivery I'm not convinced Bassett & Hinkley have the nous to make the forward line work.

Good news is Rozee can probably fill one of those slots but he's only in year 2.

We need to stick with a gameplan whatever it is. I agree with Paul Roos over the last 5 years we have chopped and changed our gameplan and have just confused our players.

You look at Richmond on the weekend their players all run as hard as they can to and away from the contest cause they know their gameplan relies on them doing that, and they will get rewarded by a teammate for their hard work, maybe not the first, second, third, fourth or 100th time but eventually they'll be rewarded.

We have chopped and changed ours to many times now. And on Richmond again, leave Dixon in the forward 50 like Lynch to do what he does best. Not lead up 150 metres from goal all day and wear himself out. Seems obvious to me.

We were all excited when Wingard was going to be the next big thing. Polec, Ryder, Dixon, Rockliff were going to ensure Port makes finals and even top 4, Howard was a revelation across half back. Then the strange recruiting of Eddy, Harvey, Toumpas, Trengove & Sutcliff.

What happen Port.
Sack Hinkley.

Why doesnt Lynch lead up to the half back flank while the ball gets kicked over his head to George constagna in a 3 on 1?

I don't get it

Pinning hopes on Jack Watts to be the missing link in defense is laughable being a letdown is in his DNA.

Yeah I’m really not sure why people are creaming over him. Guess we all love false hope

Played 1 game this season before going down injured. Was ok, but that 1 game is barely representative of his form across 173 others

You’d think he’s Matthew Scarlett with some of the comments

We need natural goalkickers. There are few, if any, players on our list capable of putting up a 40 goal season (ie 2 goal a game type forwards). All good teams have at least a couple of these players.

We're trying to do this and 90% of the board is shitting all over the idea.
