Opinion I've lost my faith in Ken Hinkley

I grew up following Sturt and took great pleasure beating Port because you knew they were the hardest team to beat. The 60s and 70s were just an amazing period in SA footy. What saddens me is the club I had a healthy respect for is now more a brand name, a corporate entity full of small town celebrities and empty cliches. All that's missing is the chardonnay. Prove me wrong Port Adelaide, grow a pair and make the tough calls.

Well, I finally wholeheartedly agree with this thread. I've defended Hinkley semi-regularly over the past couple of years, but there's no point anymore.

I don't (and won't) hate Hinkley like some do, because I really believe that he's doing the best that he can. Unfortunately his best isn't good enough, and he needs to go. Now.

As heartbreaking as yesterdays performance was we wont sack a coach whilst in the running for a finals berth, but I suspect his papers may already be stamped unless a finals miracle happens.

I also like Ken and think he is a great person, but he is a country level coach, not AFL quality unfortunately. He hasnt found the balance between team defense whilst still having an effective midfield/defence to forward line transition. It is beyond frustration watching out style of football, reminds me of Choco's last few years.

Yep Choco boundary tactics + no-one wanting the ball. Potent poo combination

The only 'brave' corridor kick I can recall was Robbie Gray in the 3rd quarter (i think). Every other kick was down the line. I don't really feel this is that great of an exaggeration?

I'd say we as a team haven't taken the game across 4 quarters on since ~rd 11

Many stages we wouldn't even take the safe kick, just handpass around in circles, turnover, straight down the other end for a shot at goal.

I wonder, should we make finals, our boys will be given time to go fishing or whatnot in the bye week. Will be an absolute fail if they are but it wouldn't surprise me...

Why would anyone ahead of the play want the ball? They're all outnumbered and outsized. If I was 3 on 1 with a couple blokes that have six inches on me I wouldn't be game to call for it either...

Ken was asked in the post match presser in the St Kilda game how he'd attempt to bring the players down from the high of that victory to prepare them mentally for the showdown.
Said something like "I'm not going to. I'm going to let them carry that feeling into next week and remain on that high for as long as possible".

So basically, 5 seconds of good, freakish football by two players was the foundation upon which he built yesterday's performance.

From memory Williams used the same build-up strategy going from the '07 prelim into the grand final....

I agree with the comments that Kern is a good bloke, I also agree that he is a country standard coach, and I'm getting horribly close to agreeing with suggestions that he needs to be sacked regardless of the fact the club is still in 5th position on the ladder, but we know that won't happen.

Posted in the changes thread, but posting here so there is less chance of it getting lost:

I agree but we've played this weird setup all season. I'm not talking about the forward line - I'm talking about from the kick out onwards. We're actually not too bad forward of halfway with wanting the ball.

"They will never expect us to try it 12 times in a row."

I'm pretty sure the wind was pushing slightly in that direction.

So in other words, "Don't worry boys, if you don't mark it we can get an easy stoppage with a boundary throw in where the Bash Brothers can go to work....."

Something that isn't piping hot bullshit? It's not hard.

Edit: actually, scratch that. it is. we are port adelaide.

This. Saying something like we're 5th so it's still rosy is Iraq tier PR.

It really is ****ing simple:
1. Acknowledge the ratshit performance
2. Say we're angry and we're going to fix it (i.e. make an emotional equilibrium with members and supporters)

The hardcore, rusted on types are losing interest. That's far scarier than losing the wagoners. We need to engage with members and supporters on an emotional level that goes well beyond fidget spinners and "he bac" bullshit Facebook memes.
