Traded Izak Rankine traded to Adelaide with #46 & F4 (Freo) for #5, F3 & F4

Then perhaps he should stop playing AFL or just sign his contract with the Suns.

How is it a potential disaster for Adelaide 😂😂😂

These big long term contracts are always a huge risk even for players with far more runs on the board than Ranks. Could work famously but odds are against you. Also him back home with his vagabond mates could spell trouble.

If you guys think he's good enough to throw 5 x 800k at, then he's good enough for you to cough up Pick 4....
The question was posed how it might be possible to aquire both rankine and JHF. It was a scenario that came to.mind

I am fine with pick 4 being in play but i would suspect GC might put one of their 2nd rounders up coming back

Sometimes a massive offer comes along and you just can't do anything about it...
We've done everything we can for him. He was more than happy to stay he loves it here and loves the club.

Money talks.

$800k a year for a small forward pocket that hasn't completely proven himself seems like an awful lot. You're talking gun mid/ tall forward for at that level.

Not sure it's a good offer for the Crows, I don't think he moves the needle that much for them at this point but they'll be giving up a lot/paying a lot for him.

Keep hearing $800k for a small forward is too much, you’d have to question Gold Coast using such a high pick on a small forward then, or is the intention for him to play elsewhere eventually?

Time under Burgess is sure to help his fitness

The rumoured money on offer is simply outrageous. They must think he is the next Stephen Millner. If Adelaide offer a first round pick for a forward pocket, I'd be like, where do I sign?
Everyone thought that Adelaide paying Eddie Betts 550k a year on a four year contract was crazy at the time. Infact Carlton thought it was so crazy they wouldn't even up their offer to 475k a year even with Eddie begging them to. How did that turn out?
With player wage increases since Eddie went to Adelaide Rankine would be on a similar level to what Eddie was payed.
800k a year is nothing compared to what it takes to find a player of his skillet, have the draft pick to get them, years to develop them, and he is a hometown product that will bring people to game in the same way Eddie did. Except he is 22 years old.

Yeah this is different, this isn't Lynch and May leaving as the club is in a shambles, this is a bloke who seemingly enjoys the club and enjoys the GC going for a massive payday, which is almost irresponsible for him to turn down.

And even if the $800k is accurate

Feels like Fools Gold for Crows fans if Rankine goes to Adelaide with notorious Fun/Energy sapping sad sack coach in Matthew Nicks.

Pretty big gamble to pay a player who is more likely to bust than boom under Nicks

This has so much potential to blow up I the Crows faces.
I thought Crows did relatively well this year, trying to play high pressure game but can't sustain it for 4 quarters in most games, played mostly very young line-ups, still not enough talent and major issues in midfield.

To be honest, I am a bit more worried about Rankine than who is Crows coach. I think he could turn out elite. I guess, we will find out next year. He definitely is a player for big moments and will entertain big crowds but when things will not go well I am not sure how he will handle the pressure in Adelaide. He is quite shy and private person, uncomfortable in public eye.

FWIW, some interesting comments by Ralph in Herald today.
“Rankine has a complicated relationship with family members back in Adelaide, and has thrived this past year without some of the distractions that would be present back in SA.

People close to him have advised him that returning to Adelaide — with the spotlight and family dynamics — would not be in his best interests.

His management company W Sports represents both Eddie Betts and Tyson Stengle, with both players’ experience with the Adelaide football club decidedly mixed.

Rankine’s manager Dimi Parhas recently told senior Suns staff including coach Stuart Dew he would not move another indigenous player back to Adelaide given his recent experiences”.

You'll be paying up the big bucks for him on potential....basically that the latter part of 2022 isn't a fluke and he really will become the next Eddie Betts or Stevie Johnson.

Which is fine....but people are going to talk about the risk of paying up so much for potential that's never fulfilled.

$800k for a small forward is not too much. Betts commanded close to that in his peak, Cameron is being paid $700k and a number of clubs would offer that to Papley. Then you have players who start as small forwards but become full time midfielders like Ablett and Akermanis.

Rankine has talent, he'll play plenty of midfield time soon enough. The only part which surprises me is the Crows have offered so much to a player who hasn't shown a tone of consistency.

If ever the club is in a position to try it, its now as our list is so young and we have very few players on big coin

Potential?
Let's see. Youngest ever SANFL player.
Very good performances at SANFL level.
Stunning performances at the National Carnival.
Preforming at a high level for his age at AFL level.
I think we have all seen enough to know its not just potential but actual performances over a long period of time.

True. Conversely, how many times do we see players given huge contracts when they are at the peak of their powers, only then to really struggle at the back end of that deal.

Dustin Martin deal was great for the first couple of years, but he's not really a $1.2m player now and won't be again IMO.
Brodie Grundy, Mitch McGovern, Franklin not currently worth $1m, Steven Motlop, Dale Thomas, Rory Sloane for example.

So if you are giving out a long term contract, at some point along the path, the player will be getting over or underpaid, and thus you need to look at it in this context.

I think the AFC has very different experiences of both players too.

It's still better than paying Zac Williams 800k per year.
