5th in the league for goal assists.

Makes things happen in the forward line.

Even if it doesn't result in a score for him.
I think the hope at our end is that he obviously comes in and kicks on but that there are other players in that forward line that will take some pressure off him in the form of Rachele, Fogarty and fingers crossed, Thilthorpe. Of course there will be pressure on him to perform, but he has all the tools and if he becomes the focus of the oppo, others have the ability to step up and kick scores now

$800k for a small forward is not too much. Betts commanded close to that in his peak, Cameron is being paid $700k and a number of clubs would offer that to Papley. Then you have players who start as small forwards but become full time midfielders like Ablett and Akermanis.

Rankine has talent, he'll play plenty of midfield time soon enough. The only part which surprises me is the Crows have offered so much to a player who hasn't shown a tone of consistency.

We've been safe for too long. I've got no issues with us making some big plays in the hope of getting to the top of the table.

Sell the farm for Rankine and JHF, combined with Thilthorpe and Rachele, and see where we are in 5-6 years.

Lol zero chance of that happening.
Reckon you’re going to be sitting through two weeks of pain in trade week waiting for this one to get done if Rankine says he wants to be a Crow.

Zero chance Suns bend over, considering what Crows have offered.

Let's compare some of the best small forwards to Izak Rankine at a similar age:

Izak Rankine: Disposals: 13.6 Goals: 1.7 Goal Assists: 1.1

Tom Papley: Disposals: 13.7 Goals: 1.2 Goal Assists: 0.6
Charlie Cameron: Disposals: 13.4 Goals: 1.0 Goal Assists: 0.8
Luke Breust: Disposals: 14.6 Goals: 1.6 Goal Assists: 1.2

Now let's say you were to trade pick 4 for any of the other three players above at a similar age. Would you be satisfied with how they've played? Would it have been worth it? Would an 800k contract have been worth it?

The contract would have been worth it but the main issue here is that Adelaide already have an elite small in development (Rachele) so I don't think it'd be a good idea to use two top 6 picks in a row on small forwards.

I don't think Rankine leaving the Suns is the end of the world for them either. They have other players similar to Rankine (albeit not as good) in development such as Rosas, Jeffrey and Ainsworth who's starting to come on.

Lets have a look at another highly talented OOC player and what he garnered for the club he left. Jake Lever - picks 10 & 16 with a 2nd rounder (mid 30's pick) coming back the other way

On the draft points calculator that is equivalent to pick 5

I mean, it was still "two firsts"....you just happened to only have later firsts.

Personally I think Pick 4 on its own is reasonable...but I reckon the Suns might end up squeezing more out of you given your apparent desperation for him.

We did it with Dawson last year, no reason why this year will be any different.

Feels like Fools Gold for Crows fans if Rankine goes to Adelaide with notorious Fun/Energy sapping sad sack coach in Matthew Nicks.

Pretty big gamble to pay a player who is more likely to bust than boom under Nicks

This has so much potential to blow up I the Crows faces.

It will never be as bad as Carlton though

Have a look at who has been taken at 4 or 5 recently.

Ash, McDonald, LDU, Ainsworth, Andrew, Stephens, Campbell, Rozee, Daicos, MKing

Unless there is a Rozee, Daicos or M King in the draft this year, it's an easy yes, regardless of who we have a small forward in the team,.

Compare him with Rioli at the same age, and considering the two team these players have been in, he's doing alright.

time will tell. I think it might be a bit back the other way where pick 4 goes but we might get a 2nd back but that's just me. Who knows, could GC ask for pick 4 and a player like Crouch and we then get some later pick points back for a Michalanney bid? I suppose there are dozens of permutations that will roll in and out

Ultimately what is the fall back position of GC? - they don't like the offer and threaten to allow him to go to the draft? Seems Rankine does not want that from one of the reports so maybe he stays?

What is the fall back for Adelaide if GC won't agree to their offer. They could look to really front end any contract and entice Rankine to nominate for the national draft or they walk away and go to the draft, but the optics won't be great on that from the clubs perspective. Maybe a bit like the Dunkley Essendon trade saga more recently

Lots to play out and until a deal is done, its not done and Rankine could still stay on the Coast

Got to love all these salty fans from other clubs...

"He's not worth $800k, fools gold"
"You need to give up pick 4, you shouldn't be doing that"
"As if he wants to join Adelaide"
"Crows already have Rachelle, they don't need another small forward"

Gee we're going to enjoy watching the guy play for us next year.

Playing devil's advocate Adelaide are pretty desperate as a lot of their drafted talent have not developed very good.

Not the worst contract offered he is 22 at worst he becomes a 650-700k player by the end of it and they lose a little value.

I would say all are fair assumptions. I would expect Crows would have to guarantee Izak that they will do the deal. If that includes pick 4 so be it. Especially if reports are true that Izak would not agree to PSD. I am pretty sure Suns would ask for pick 4 and possibly more.

What are all those reports today that Izak wants to stay with Suns but is under extreme pressure from family, his agent advising him against moving back to Adelaide due to family issues, bad influence mates. It's getting crazy.

Yes it is and there is still 2 months and counting for trade period - so lots of time for us to all sit and ponder whats going to happen. But whatever the case, it seems that Rankine if he goes is the only one of the more recent crop of yours to do so and the longer term signings of King, Hollands, Lukosius etc are setting a better longer term trend. As long as Rowell and Anderson can stay on for a few more years at least, your team will be in good shape.

For us, it represents a time where we are tending to draft local and are seeking quality SA players to come back to SA so if we get Rankine, great news. If not, then it may well be that we draft in Phillipou (assuming he is on the board at our pick) and he is another top end projected SA mid..so we will be ok
