Increasingly 1st round picks are coming in ready to play. As I said, go and have a look at 1st round small forwards 2018 onwards. Which player is he better than? Weightman, Pickett, Rachelle, Rozee, Butters. Pick 5 gets any one of those. KPPs remain a dark art but players that go top 10 and are 6ft or thereabouts are failing less and less. Pick 5 this year will almost certainly be a gun.
All of the players you named except Rozee played more games than Rankine this season, and received coaches votes in less games.

If the Swans could draft in any of them into the team for finals, it'd be a toss-up between Rozee and Ramkine for me.

I would take Rankine over all those players you mentioned bar Pickett and Rozee.

Not sure what point you are getting at here tbh

Your average full time AFL club employed draft expert should back themselves in to find someone better than Rankine at pick 5. Thats a very good pick. Maybe aroundpick 15 it becomes more iffy

In theory, maybe. In practice, Rankine appears to have a higher ceiling than the vast majority of recent, and not so recent, pick 5s.

Adelaide don't seem to think so given they're willing to pay him more than one of the greatest small forwards in history in Eddie betts.

You'd pay pick 5 for a player of betts calibre in a heartbeat. Hawthorn paid pick 7 for Cyril and I doubt they're looking back disappointed.

Crows fans really have no idea on anything. Ever been to a Cows game all they can do is shout ball and clap. No wonder only ones they can recruit are SA locals who want to go home.
That’s literally every football crowd

Congratulations on finally getting a stadium to hold 40,000 of these wonderful supporters

It's the same contract as Charlie Cameron, who was contracted when he left the crows. For Pick 12.

Nah that's not how draft picks work. They're inherently uncertain.

Pick 5 since 2000 (National Draft Pick #5 - Draftguru):

Andrew McDougall - C grade
Xavier Clarke - B grade
Jarrad McVeigh - A grade
Brock McLean - B grade
Lance Franklin - A+ grade
Scott Pendlebury - A+ grade
Travis Boak - A+ grade
Jarrad Grant - C grade
Michael Hurley - A grade
Ben Cunnington - B grade
Jared Polec - B grade
Matt Buntine - C grade
Jake Stringer - A grade
Kade Kolodjashnij - C grade
Jordan De Goey - B grade
Darcy Parish - A grade
Will Setterfield - C grade
Adam Cerra - B grade
Connor Rozee - A grade
Dylan Stephens - ?
Braeden Campbell - ?
Mac Andrew - ?

So that's:

A+ grade: 3
A grade: 5
B grade: 6
C grade: 5

You're as likely to get a B/C grader as an A grader, maybe more so.

IMO Rankine from this point projects as a high B/low A grader, without too much uncertainty. He should be about as good as a De Goey or Stringer on that list, most likely.

So the choice is either pick 5 which is 50% likely to be a good player, or Rankine who's 90% likely to be a good player.

Seems like an easy choice to me.

I’m sure Izak would be stoked to donate $594,000 to the Australian government in year 1 of his contract…

On iPhone using BigFooty.com mobile app

really no difference, those $ are going to be taxed in the highest bracket if earned in subsequent years anyway. So he still gets the benefit of the after tax $ being pushed forward.

That's the worst attempt at disparaging a fanbase I think I've ever heard or read.

You've just described every crowd that's ever been at an AFL game. Well done.

GWS paid pick 4 for Jarrod Pickett, are they looking back in disappointed?

Personally I think Rankine is overrated.
The hype around him pre draft, he just hasn't delivered on that.

Maybe it's a mental issue/homesickness that has been holding him back from playing his best football, I don't know.

He showed some glimpses this year but I personally would want a pick back if im giving up pick 5.

Problem Adelaide have is, if the money is as good as reported it's going to be a hard sell to convince GC he isn't worth pick 5 alone.

And on cue the stupidity of Victorian media bubbles away.
So Barrett sat there for 5 minutes saying he wasnt convinced that Rankine is going to be a superstar and even compared him to Stengle to say how he isn't that good. He then asks about what he is worth and says that Adelaide have pick 5 bu that's too lopsided Adelaide's way and they might need to get another first rounder for it.
What a ****.
They couldn't hide their biases if they tried.

To be fair, all the footy media are idiots but Barrett is generally worse than the rest

Parish isn’t fit to carry Ben Cunnington’s bags.

One thing to keep in mind is that pick 5 wont be pick 5.

A north PP (I hope it wont be this early, but...), and Ashcroft would easily push it back to at least 7.
