Jacinta Allan - Leading a zombie government

You reckon there are any ALP state pollies capable (or willing) of standing up to the Unions?

It's always the biggest problem with the ALP. The parliamentary politicians have less power than it appears on the face of it.

Ben Carroll was Minister for Industry and Employment under Andrews, so he's going to be in this up to his eyeballs already.

I think there are definitely some that would feel morally compelled to stand up to some of these union leaders. However, the ALP as a whole probably regards these deals as the price of politics.

Can't think of anyone else. McKenzie is a fearless, patient, "leave no stones unturned" investigative journalist.
You wonder how long before there is a genuine attempt on his life. Bikies, Gatto and the outing of the gravy train they were on. If it does ever get cleaned up he would have to be a target

A bit of recent history for context - this why the current government will have to go down screaming and kicking before turning on the CFMEU:

"Unions contributed more than $5 million to Labor in (2022-2023) with the CFMEU and its allied construction shops becoming the biggest donors to the Victorian branch in the months leading up to the 2022 state election,

The left-wing construction union’s $336,739 in Victorian ALP donations in 2022-23, revealed by electoral disclosures on Thursday, follow the Andrews government backing the Construction Forestry Maritime Employees Union to take coverage of the state’s civil construction sector at the expense of the traditional construction union the Australian Workers Union."

This has been going on for decades in Victoria, and it won’t be ending anytime soon. Organised crime has well & truly infiltrated politics, and they have that much dirt on politicians - they’re forced to fall in-line or get publicly exposed.

Sad part, tax payers are being fleeced sideways … and it’s happening right in front of us for all to see. It is as bad, if not worse, than what happened in New York in the 70’s & 80’s.

Jacinta Allen can't believe her good fortune. Just when she was into major trouble with the media over the CFMEU and crime crisis, her opposite number Brad Battin made an unforgiveable mistake by going up to Qld during Cyclone Alfred and then spending 4 hours on a luxury cruise and missing a crucial sitting of parliament where Allen annouced new bail laws-the exact laws Battin had been calling for ever since he was elected opposition leader last December. What are the odds of a leadership challenge against Battin happening?

She can believe her luck. Why would she think the people who leaked about O'Brien and Guy and Pesutto wouldn't leak about Battin?

Neither will be in the radar of floating voters though. The CMFEU thing is just background noise, even if serious

The 'Battin in QLD' story is nothing more than a cheap beat-up by Labor to deflect and take the spotlight of the government over the CFMEU saga. It is nothing like Morrison going to Hawaii. Battin is not the premier and the bail law problem was of the government's making.

As I understand it, the government is due to release the reforms to parliament today. So exactly why was Battin supposed to have been in Melbourne last week? In anticipation of a bill that might be tabled but wasn't? Sure Battin could and should have been upfront about what he was up to, but why is it that we put the spotlight on politicians taking leave when everyone in the country does?

Meanwhile, more lies from Jacinta, telling reporters she was introducing new measures to combat underworld infiltration of the CFMEU, only to be corrected by VicPol who reminded her that what she was announcing had been in operation since July 2024.

1. what makes you think this is a labor beat-up - and not lnp enemies leaking against him

2. the herald $cum has written inspector plods own colleagues have 'dubbed' the qld vacation his 'scott morrison moment'

for the sake of your health and wellbeing, remove the conservative msm IV drip

So we just accept it?

CFMEU corruption on The Big Build has conceivably cost taxpayers billions of dollars, and it is continuing unabated, despite Allan's assurances 8 months ago the problem would be addressed. And that's okay with you?

I understand defenders of Labor will have the attitude, "who cares, we just have to accept standards have dropped". I don't. And I object to this state falling apart at the seams and the fact I have to pay taxes that I never had to pay because this corrupt government is kowtowing to the CFMEU like there is no tomorrow.

no one is saying “who cares”. just lower the diarrhea-style sensationalism. remember the infrastructure was needed cos the reactionaries always sit on their hands and do sfa. and that it’s not only labor that has cost blowouts and stuff-ups - remember scummos reign,

The CFMEU weren't involved in civil construction before Andrews became Premier. The issues being reported by Nick McKenzie et al are, as far as government contracts go, uniquely Andrews/Allan Government problems. Any other issue is merely related to the ALP being the political wing of the union movement.

No doubt you'd label Nick McKenzie's report as "diarrhea-style sensationalism"?

"The Victorian government covered up rampant and ongoing CFMEU-linked organised crime infiltration and corruption on its multibillion-dollar Big Build infrastructure scheme by failing to ensure scrutiny of “senior bureaucrats and ministerial offices”, according to the top investigator appointed to clean up the construction sector.

The accusation that Victorian Labor has in effect run a protection racket comes amid new revelations of wrongdoing including the employment of “baseball bat-wielding violent people” on the Big Build, where women have been bashed and then black-banned after they complained."

It would be a fair bet the story has come from LNP circles.
How often do you see an ex-leader of a political party who is still seething over his/her removal by several of his so-called cabinet colleagues apparently leaking out highly sensitive info to select journalists whether it's in Spring Street or Canberra to undermine the new leader's creditability within the party and the electorate as a whole. Think Kevin Rudd v Julia Gillard in 2010-13, or Tony Abbott v Malcolm Turnbull 2015-18.

Whatever 'ipa' is? How about using proper grammar? Heard of Capitals, spell-check? Reading your posts is incredibly challenging. Did you finish school in grade 6?

I doubt you will get anything on the right side that comes close to what the CFMEU has been up to and with full impunity from the government. As someone posted, this is reminiscent of New York City in the 1970's when the Mafia ran the joint.

Going back to your first post. Who is saying it is not only Labor that has cost blowouts and stuff-ups? You raised that. I was posting about criminal corruption; standover tactics; assault of H&S officials; fictitious salary payments; and a premier who pretends it isn't happening until forced to say something - "I'm shocked"

Premier Jacinta Allan and Police Minister Anthony Carbines have been accused of “corruption and misconduct in public office” over the axing of the state’s two top cops.
Ousted deputy commissioner Neil Patersonhas filed an explosive complaint to the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission, alleging he and dumped chief commissioner Shane Patton were victims of an “unlawful” conspiracy.

In the complaint to IBAC and the State Ombudsman, Mr Paterson calls for an investigation into whether the Allan government approached Rick Nugent to take over the police chief commissioner role before moving to ditch Mr Patton.

Interesting

But kalex6251 swears ‘black and blue’ that Patton and Patterson voluntarily resigned

Huh? the Construction Union have been doing this kind of crap since the Grollo days, CityLink and before.

The Battin thing is definitely a beat-up, but it's almost certainly from within the Liberal Party rather than the ALP. I don't think Pollies should be taking leave for cruises during sitting days, but it's not a big deal since he's opposition leader and they're proposing legislation he doesn't disagree with and also that his parents live up there.

Pretty sure he wasn't on leave during a sitting week. Wasn't it over the Labour Day long weekend? The source would not have been ALP. I would be suspicious of the forces that elected Battin, considering they did the same thing to Guy when they rolled O'Brien for him, then got buyer's remorse very quickly.

Civil construction were AWU sites before Andrews. The CFMEU primarily worked on commercial sites.

Tunneling, earthworks and roads were typically AWU, cranes, scaffold and concreting have mostly been CFMEU. The recent change since 2016 has been the CFMEU muscling out the AWU from earrhworks although they've had mixed luck with tunnels.

Seems like the CFMEU like to muscle in on any civil project large enough for them, or perhaps the ones which include enough cranes. In my mind, anything with a crane has been CFMEU ( I don't recall crane crews without CFMEU stickers, and I can't remember any AWU stickers at all and I've been on dozens (maybe a hundred) civil construction sites over the last 20 years. (I just googled it to see if it was a symbol I'd seen 100 times but hadn't registered, but no, never seen any of their emblems before).
