Oppo Camp Jack Ginnivan (Traded to Hawks 2023)

I don't think any of us like to see it but as I keep saying that is beside the point.

There is officially sanctioned bias being perpetrated and that is far, far uglier for the game.

I'm enjoying it but they need to pay them otherwise it's pointless.

He has to be willing to take the hit which he does. There was one against North melb that tackled him well, they got low with him and was a fair tackle which he got wrapped up.

So it can be done.

I didn't like it when Selwood did it, I didn't like it when Shuey was doing it, I didn't like seeing Pendles adopt it and I don't like seeing Ginnivan doing it.

I dont blame the kid though, he was watching Selwood get 3 of these style frees a game for years. Why wouldn't he adopt it? If they'd stopped paying Selwood frees for it 20 years ago we wouldn't have this problem. If the player with the ball raise their arms as a way to cause the tacklers arm to go high, I think it should be called play on. The initial tackle is on the biceps and fair and should be called that way.

Selwood is still top 5 in AFL for frees for.

But he also puts his head over the pill everytime and cops his whacks. Like Ginnivan I hope they don't change the way he plays or change the ruling, the umps need a kick up the ass for how they umpire him specifically.

One aspect of AFL interpretaion that hasn't sat entirely comfortable with me for a while is the intention or need to reward the tackler. How often do players hold back trying to win a free rather than attacking the footy.

Protect and reward guys like Ginnivan and Selwood who actually go get the footy. The easiest way for the opposition to deny them frees is to actually win the ball themselves.

Rant over.

The NBA no longer judges intent for flagrant fouls.
I don't follow it anymore. Do they still have intentional fouls as well flagrant. And with flagrant, do they just assume intent on the action rather than judging it and giving the get out of jail card, might have been accidental that produces inconsistency in decisions? Which I suppose is jonbes point.

He is first to the footy and stays low. The way every junior is taught to get the footy.

Do you know what else juniors are taught? To tackle at the HIPS. you don’t tackle high if you tackle at the hips.

if he ducks into a tackle, fair enough. Pay holding the ball, but I have never seen him duck into a tackle or try to evade a tackle by ducking.

And the bs about tackles slipping high after hitting the shoulder/ top of arm Is also rubbish. That is a high tackle.

when you chase someone down from behind, you still need to tackle correctly by turning them on their side. You can’t drive their back into the ground Otherwise it is called a push in the back And not holding the ball (Fwiw I think it still should be holding the ball).

when a tackle slips from above the knees to below the knees, it is still called a trip.

Ginni has a target on him. Players seem to tackle him a little more vigorously than others I’ve noticed.

All the talk of him raising his arm like Selwood has me confused.
He seems to raise his arm after the initial contact.
Even the LDU one was seemingly at the same time as the contact.
This link provided by Chrispiesssss shows them.
I’d be telling Jack to keep his arms down to remove the doubt.

He’s good at that too. Can’t recall him giving away a 50m for dissent.

The prohibition against dissent has extended the range of facial expression. It's the biggest positive of the rule change.

Did anyone notice Mitchell’s reply and body language to Slobbo last night when discussing this topic at the end of the coaches segment?

Yep, was Buckleyesque in his dismissal of Robbo.

They don't really have intentional fouls. Flagrant 1, Flagrant 2 and technical fouls.

They've made intent irrelevant. F1 is unnecessary contact committed by a player against an opponent, whereas an F2 is unnecessary and excessive contact committed by a player against an opponent.

Those are all great points, and all true for my money. Onus is on the tackler to tackle the man with the ball correctly, not trip him, land on his back, or take him above the shoulder.
Robbo getting put in his place by Sam was so good to watch; he looked like a little kid being told "end of story" by his dad.

They are taught to tackle arms these days to prevent the handball.
