The suggestion that a ball carrier has to stand bolt upright in the tackle is so... let's call it silly, I've sworn enough haha...

I think we all get that this is an issue for the AFL to work on. But they've botched it so badly. It'd be funny if it didn't involve a kid getting whacked about the head.
That's the part that gets me with all this. I'm not even trying to suggest that Jack has never done anything to "draw" the contact but... under the new interpretation, it's almost suggesting that players can't try to evade or accelerate. Your height is going to be slightly reduced if you are evading or running.
Or are they meant to run like this?

You have to run like Robocop…upright & in a straight line

Draper is such a flog.

I think I might hate him more than Stringer.

Perfect analogy.

The more you think about it (which they obviously didn't do) the worse their logic becomes.

Where's the line between evasion of the tackle and drawing high contact? Easy answer: there's no discernable line and asking umpires to try and adjudicate on it in the heat of the moment is ridiculous. So instead the umpires pick players that they think are drawing the contact and have a guess, usually to the detriment of the ball carrier.

It’s quite simple, as described by Chris Scott when defending Selwood on AFL 360. Selwood is ducking to evade the tackle. As long as the player is ducking to evade the tackle and not ducking to get a free he will get a free.

It's not f**king hurdles.

The AFL, in their efforts to "clarify" the rule, just muddied the waters instead.
It makes it bloody difficult for umpires, too.
It should just be high tackle = free kick.
If players like Jack & Selwood are good at drawing frees for high tackles, just live with it, and go for the hips, as was always the way it was taught.
Try and pin an arm as well.
Be better at tackling.

I worked in Essendon for a number of years.
It's like a country town full of bogans.
Many of the bogans have ample money.
Now now Junior , you must have been in Jacana or Broady , Essendon is a great place to live , their supporters however are self entitled flogs , I love been here when we do the number on them , how sweet it is to walk down Puckle st , Fletcher st and Mount rd with my Pies polo top on , warms the cockles of the heart , oh the look in their eyes , very bitter and angry. 😀

Good on you Matrix… flying the flag. I grew up in Niddrie and went to school in Essendon. Boy oh boy, I copped it over the years.
I’ve still got mates from those days, some still living in Essendon. They’re struggling this week.
I don’t live in Melbourne any more, but if I did I’d be doing exactly what you’ve described — putting on the colours and CIRCULATING.

An alternate view: the AFL are not specifically interested in one particular tackle and whether it is high or not. Their biggest concern is trying not to encourage players trying to draw this free. Because that trickles down to juniors.

In hindsight Jack was in strife as soon as he (innocently) talked about trying to draw this free.

Talk of AFL bias against Collingwood is lunacy.

🤪 The AFL are out to get us! 🤪🤪🤪

Check this out. AFL evasive skills drills with Cyril Rioli where he lowers the body in all examples.

Question. How do you evade a tackler? Buggered if i know. But I know what the tacklers will do on all occasions. Just try to knock the players head off.

Great example of AFL hypocrisy.

I'd go further and say, it's impossible for any player to brace for contact, or change direction, without lowering their centre of gravity.
Unless of course, you have a supply of helium balloons up your butt (I'm looking at you Brad Scott).

No, it was Essendon - in Mt Rd.

If anyone wants to see how to improve Jack's situation with the umpires, they should have a look at AFL tonight. They went down to geelong and asked all the past and present players about joel selwood before his 350. Lots of tributes....what a man.... what a player ....what a human being...

if the pies can start a narrative about jack giving to the poor ....or saving the ukraine.... or similar things... it would be sure to improve his status with the umpires and he'd get more frees.....well its worked for geelong

it's his hair and mustacho.. should be illegal

He looks like a gigantic bogan pawhn actor. Bailey Smith but with the caravan park factor amped to 11.
