Oppo Camp Jack Ginnivan (Traded to Hawks 2023)

While Taylor Adams and McStay are cursing their injuries, Ginnivan is at the horse races.
Ginnivan was lucky to start and didn’t appreciate it.
Eating carbs, drinking water and sleeping is the way to prepare running 14 km and playing the best game of your life. Not being at Moonee Valley.
Was the worst on ground.
Luck for him we won.
Please keep telling AFL players what they need to do. It is clear that they have no clue, given they just won a premiership

I don’t really care about him going to the valley last night for an hour.

I care about his on-field performances throughout the finals series, and he’s borderline for our best 23 and needs to improve to become an auto-selection in 2024. I’m hoping there will be significant pressure applied by Reef, Harrison, even Allan and shuffle the magnets, maybe Tay forward to provide the pressure that Ginni mostly doesn’t… but the team that stands still gets bypassed quickly.

He'll be a fringe player going forward. When the heat was on in finals he was a non contributor.

Jack Ginnivan thought he’d cry when he won an AFL premiership, but the tears never came.
Maybe there had already been enough after a gruelling year fighting tooth and nail to get back into Collingwood’s senior team.

The 20-year-old revealed what he described as “challenging times” as he all but conceded his dream of returning to senior football this year had been over, before he was sensationally recalled to the Magpies’ starting 22 for the premiership decider after two months dedicated to determination in a bit to reinvigorate his young career.

“There was definitely some challenging times,” Ginnivan told this masthead.

“I remember halfway through the year, I definitely wasn’t going to get back into the side. Then there was all the trade rumours, because you’re not in the side and all that thing.

“I thought, stuff that.

“I went to the right people – the high performance, the dietitian, everyone around me, the coaches. I got better. And I came out a premiership player, so I can’t complain.”

Ginnivan didn’t play until Round 5 of this season, his first two rounds curtailed by an illicit drugs ban after an off-season incident before he was forced to fight his way back through the VFL as the Magpies lost just one game from their first 12.

He revealed he went “all-in on myself”.

“(It was) for probably two months there where I wasn’t in the side,” he said.

“Maybe that was the impact of why I’m in the side (now), I don’t know.”

There’d been an Under 14s flag and a reserves premiership before Saturday’s glory. They hardly compared.

“I wasn’t sad – I thought I’d be sad. Sometimes (I’m a crier) … I was in the prelim last year. But just pure happiness and it’s an overwhelming feeling,” he said.

But, as “the most talked about player”, as he put it, grand final day didn’t come without a headline or two as eyebrows were raised with Ginnivan’s brief attendance to watch a mate’s horse run at Friday night Group 1 racing at Moonee Valley the night before the big day.

It will be yet another learning curve for the young playmaker, his coach Craig McRae said.

“It’s the resilience that (Hill) has shown that Jack’s starting to live,” he said.

“You’ve got to make mistakes and learn from it and grow and get better. There’s so many stories.

“Jack’s growing up. He’s the (second) youngest player in our team. There’s going to be so much he learns from today.

“Don’t go to the races the day before would be the lesson (there), I would say.”

Didn’t like it, coach?

“Read the room, Jack,” McRae said.

“But you’ve got to grow up. You’ve got to make mistakes to learn from them. And Ginni is the youngest player in the room.

“He’s got great role models in resilience … we’ll keep trying to educate. We’re not finished. We are nowhere near finished. We’ll grow and make more mistakes and then try to get better.”

Ginnivan finds the attention on him a bit “ridiculous” at times, crediting his passionate family for their endless support.
“I’m 20 and not an absolute star like Nick (Daicos) or someone. But it’s all fun,” he laughed.

“When you have a dad like mine who’s super proud and loves me to bits and mum that loves me to bits and family members as best friends that look after me … it makes it so special.

“I’m so grateful I get to do it for them.”

Jack is a favorite of mine, but I can't say the last 24 hours fills me with confidence.

Of course going to the races for an hour to watch your mates horse race is fine. But it's also the day before the grand final, you are a collingwood player, and you are jack ginnivan.

It adds an extra unnecessary layer of scrutiny to the grand final. It doesn't matter how fair or logical it is to go, this is collingwood, and this is the media we are talking about. Here we are, 24 hours after a premiership win and we are talking about it. I think that's what Fly means by "reading the room" and just don't go.

And it would all be moot if Jack played a decent game with a few tackles, or a number of possessions, or a couple of goals... but I was quite disappointed by his game especially all the excitement of him finally starting in the 22. This also has no bearing that I had some money on Jack picking up 15 disposals and kicking 2 goals 😂 like I said... he's s favorite of mine.

In terms of next season, let's see how Jack steps up. He's had a controversial preseason this one and let's hope that doesn't repeat itself. I do agree that the main issue with Jack is he simply needs to mature, learn and grow up. My goodness, just googled his age, he's only 20 years old! But, AFL is a fast moving industry and I hope he's able to learn the right things before it's too late.

I think the “read the room” comment was a nod to McStay, Noble, Adams etc. You don’t want to take the opportunity for granted, because they don’t come around every year.

No, Jack was very poor. Had a few chances that he tried to be the hero instead of playing the percentages, defensively I don't think he even got close to laying a tackle... very bad and play won't much next year without massive improvements.
agree. has footy smarts but a very slow player when in space or trying to chase down an opponent.

Had an almost game with some kicks that didn't quite hit the target. But his set shot was plain dumb.
Yeah, he was being too cute with his shots on goal. Kids these days try the snap, but 40 out, just go for the drop punt.
But yeah, wasn't his day. It happens.

He went to his sister's Grand Final in Bendigo a night before a final last year, which I don't think anyone cared about.

It was just his performance that let him a bit down yesterday unfortunately.
A family member’s grand final is streets different to the races though.

The set shot wasn't dumb. He'd know his stats from that sort of distance.

The thing with across the body is that it's distance more than accuracy that is affected when you don't flush it. Not flushing it was the issue - a not flushed drop punt would have made the distance but missed.

If he doesn’t show major improvement in 2024 he’s likely to be traded or delisted I’d wager.

Has gone nowhere for 2 years.
Nonsense, he is firmly in our 25 best. Delisting someone from that group for no reason is just nonsense.

Gee whiz

Could of easily had 2 goals and we won a flag

His 20!!

Wish he kicked one but he didn't

How good

Go pies

Almost sent a decent long kick to Elliot and another to hill…. Both two one one one contests and unlucky they didn’t land our way. Was also was out in the open when mccreery was forced to bomb from 70, unfortunately beau didn’t see him.

An almost game as I said.

The kick to Hill was to his disadvantage and was as dumb as his set shot.
