Jon Ralph:
Gold Coast is confident Port Adelaide will hand over its future first-rounder for top five pick Jack Lukosius given the club has committed to him on a six-year deal.
The Power and Suns have had constructive dialogue on Lukosius’ future and those discussions are expected to advance in coming days.
Lukosius chose the Power over Adelaide on a deal of up to a million dollars a season.
Suns list boss Craig Cameron said on Monday he expected smooth progress on the trade.

The thing with Lukosius is that it’s gone past being able to talk about potential. He’s completed six years in an AFL system and is not a top-10 player at Gold Coast, moreover being dropped more than once in 2024. The suggestion of a F1R is based on the fact he is contracted but that is counterbalanced by the amount of money keeping him on GC’s list will cost them.

We gave up pick 30ish for Watts (and it has continued to hurt us watching Fritsch be a darn good player). Lukosius is not worth a lot more than Watts was. Probably pick 20-25 given that we will be offloading some or a lot of his salary from GC’s books.

No-one here seriously expects Lukosius to dominate for us. He’ll be handy and play some nice games. Maybe he’ll have 1-2 cracking seasons. But he’s not going to produce consistent top 5 on our list level football over several years the way Houston will.
Today I learned my name is "No-one Here"

A late first (or our future 1st) is the right price. Even a year ago his price would’ve been 2 x 1sts.

People are seriously underestimating how good Lukosius will be for Port.

Has always looked like he has real talent but is very lazy.

The huge red flag with him is Harddick not wanting him. That is a red flag the size of the Titanic.

The odds of Stinkers getting more out of him are astronomical.

If the price is too high, then forget it.

Better off bringing Gary Rohan in for a year or two for a packet of twisties and a chomp.

Think there’s going to be some egg on some faces on 12 months time looking back on this thread.

Think he’s being very under rated.

Most likely going to be a minimum 40 goal a year forward and will be head to head with Georgiades as our leading goal kicker.

He’s a great kick and if he’s getting as many shots on goal as Finlayson has been then he will be kicking 50+ goals next year.

The team who is infamous for struggling in finals should bring in Gary Rohan is certainly a take

The odds of Hinkley getting more out of him are zero. Hinkley is just a time suck on our club, burning opportunities and seasons.

The odds we need to look at is whether Carr can get more out of him in 2026.

There were 20 players in the entire AFL who kicked 40 goals this year and 10 of them only just did so kicking between 41-44. Ridiculous call to say this guy is a "minimum 40 goal a year forward".

Wot, if we pay more than we can get him for? Why on earth would we not trade with the Suns in a nearly abusive manner like, well, almost every other club seems to do? Put another way, if Carlton or Collingwood land Houston for unders the egg won't be on the faces of that arrogant subset of their posters who go about wantonly underrating him. They do that to a large extent because we let trading with us be almost as 'easy' as trading with the Suns. Not just because of the old Vic bias-ery - that is real but is given too much credit by us here.

No, that just means Hardwick thinks he and that list can get better value for money spending on other trade targets.

Being dropped & pushed out by Hardwick is a red flag, that’s why we offer an early 2nd.
It felt like he was being made an example out of to the rest of the team for their poor performances, that one of their highest paid could be dropped. His response to that was a 5 goal 20+ game in the seconds. Admittedly I don't pay enough attention to the suns to see what sort of effort he was giving prior to being dropped.

Don’t be fooled. Luko is a fringe tall forward or defender, in a side that couldn’t make finals. Even with key forward tax, his “potential” and GC covering part of his salary, his value is probably around pick 25.
Yeah bit of an over-exaggeration. He's only ever been dropped for two individual games, and the suns offered him a massive contract - what part of that screams "fringe player"? He's kicked 62 goals in the last 2 years which puts him only 2 goals behind Rioli for goals kicked at Port during this time, and significantly ahead any other Port players - and that's despite the fact he played significant minutes on the wing in the early parts of this season.

His weak contested game is fair to raise as a negative, but I genuinely think he will thrive in a better environment. Gold Coast has been horrendous at developing and utilising talent. Noah Anderson and Touk Miller are probably the only players who have lived up to their potential at the suns.

In 2023 he kicked 39 goals playing for GC, a team that finished 15th and had over 200 less inside 50s than us.

This year, he spent the first half of the year down back again before going forward in the second half. Again he was on track for 38 goals in he played the full year up forward going by his averages.

In 2023 we had Fin with 76 shots on goal for a pissy 38 goals. Convert that to Lukos accuracy and that’s a 50 goal year. Again this year Fin had 29 shots on goal for 12 goals. Rubbish accuracy again but still ave nearly 2.5 shots on goal a game.

If Luko is getting that much forward ball and shots, he will absolutely be kicking 40+ and pushing our leading goal kicker.

Even Dixon on one leg managed 42 shots on goal this year.

The funny thing is that Finlayson came with the reputation as a dead-eye in front of goal.

Think unfortunately for Finlayson, his personal circumstances have significantly impacted his performance.

Which is totally understandable as well.

However Luko won’t be carrying that weight on his shoulders.

He’s a beautiful kick of the ball and if our midfield continues to supply him as they have Finlayson, he will be a very handy forward I think.

We all know he has talent. But his attitude has severely limited his ability to use his talent.

Yeah - so it's a red flag for Port!

Harddick looks for character number 1. This bloke is talented but weak in mind and ticker. Harddick tests for this. And Lukosius failed and cut and ran.

He's played off Port and the Crows to up his $$$, so his gf can hang out with Rozee's wife.
There is zero evidence that he is a serious footballer so far.
It reeks of Port being suckers.

Even if that’s the case, Finlayson has been limited in his impact on the game and laconic/disinterested and still managed 72 shots on goal last year.

Dixon again who can hardly move is managing plenty of shots.

He won’t become peak Nick Riewoldt however if he receives the same amount of ball as those two have been, he will easily knock out 40+.

That’s all we need from him is to kick it through the sticks when presented with those opportunities. Something most of our forwards have struggled with for a while.

I have great faith in Jason Crisps, remeber his team created a miracle when bringing in JHF & Rioli two year ago

I'm not sure Luko's attitude is the issue I think what you have is a highly skilled, laconic floater of a player he'll do some great stuff and other times he'll loaf around like Westhoff on shrooms. He's not reaching his draft hype that's a long time ago now.

If we modestly overpay for Luko in terms of draft and leave GC with some portion of his remaining contract salary, might there be enough space in our cap to help the Houston situation simply go away with a mid term contract adjustment (assuming that is even a thing)? And if no dollar shifting, that 13 for F1 sounds... reasonable, if we keep Houston.

I for one would like to see Houston-to-Luko as someone's BF username.
Clearly we are happy to push Houston out. Dan may have triggered this convo, but make no mistake that the club is seeing the opportunity to get early picks now and put their time and investment into Sinn at half back.

I think Evans coming on as he has, has made a difference to our strategy too. Evans IMO is the most like-for-like Houston replacement.
