Jaguars announce 2022 coaching staff

Posted by Myles Simmons on February 17, 2022, 12:34 PM EST

As the Jaguars continue to move on from the short-lived Urban Meyer era, they announced on Thursday that they’ve finalized the first coaching staff under new head coach Doug Pederson.

Jacksonville has 22 coaches for 2022. Many of the coaches have been previously reported, including offensive coordinator Press Taylor, defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell, and special teams coordinator Heath Farwell.

Taylor — Bengals head coach Zac Taylor’s brother — worked with Pederson from 2016-2020 on the Eagles. He was the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Pederson’s final season in Philadelphia.

Caldwell was previously the Buccaneers’ inside linebackers coach. But he and Pederson worked together on Andy Reid’s Eagles staff from 2009-2012.

Pederson has kept six members of the 2021 coaching staff: running backs coach Bernie Parmalee, inside linebackers coach Tony Gilbert, senior defensive assistant Bob Sutton, assistant receivers coach Will Harriger, defensive quality control coach Patrick Reily, and assistant offensive line coach Todd Washington.

On offense, the Jaguars also have Jim Bob Cooter as passing game coordinator, Mike McCoy as quarterbacks coach, Phil Rauscher as offensive line coach, Chris Jackson as receivers coach, Richard Angulo as tight ends coach, Andrew Breiner as assistant QBs coach, and Nick Williams as offensive quality control.

On defense, Jacksonville hired Deshea Townsend as defensive pass game coordinator/secondary coach, Brenton Buckner as defensive line coach, Bill Shuey as outside linebackers coach, Cody Grimm as safeties coach, and Rory Segrest as assistant defensive line coach.

Farwell was most recently the Bills special teams coordinator from 2019-2021. The club also hired Luke Thompson as assistant special teams coach.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson will call plays on offense.

Pederson will have a much more hands-on approach to the Jaguars offense than departing head coach Urban Meyer. For example, he is expected to know which of his players are on the field in a given game. He is also expected to call plays. Pederson was the Eagles' play-caller for most of his tenure, handing off some of the responsibility in 2020, as the wheels came off the Carson Wentz-era Eagles. Much of Pederson's appeal as a head coaching candidate was his ability to build an offense that will suit Trevor Lawrence. It makes sense that he will be calling the plays for that offense as well.

Doug Pederson on Trent Baalke: We’ve connected, I want to get to know him

Posted by Josh Alper on February 21, 2022, 9:57 AM EST

The Jaguars’ decision to keep Trent Baalke as their General Manager after firing head coach Urban Meyer during the 2021 season was met with criticism in some corners.

Baalke’s presence was believed to be a negative for some head coaching candidates who didn’t want to work with him because of how things played out with the 49ers when Baalke was their G.M. in the early 2010s. While that might have been an issue for some potential coaches, it didn’t stop Doug Pederson from taking the job.

Pederson told Albert Breer of SI.com that he isn’t letting the opinions of others color his view of someone he’ll be working closely with in Jacksonville.

“A lot of these reports that are out there are from a lot of unnamed sources,” Pederson said. “I can remember my time in Philly, back in ’16, there were a lot of unnamed sources that thought I wasn’t very good as a head coach. But they never put their name to it. And I’m like, ‘Well, what good is that? If you’re gonna say something, at least own up to it.’’And so my philosophy with things like that is I want to get to know the person. I want to get to know Trent Baalke, what makes him tick, his family, his likes, his dislikes and his history as a GM. All those things. He’s had a lot of success in this league. And I’ll tell you something — we’ve connected from day one, all the way back to my first interview with the Jaguars. . . . I can go sit in his office, he can come sit in mine and we don’t even have to talk ball. We just tell stories and that’s how you get to know people.”

Pederson’s said that he doesn’t see the Jaguars as an overnight fix and that will likely mean some tough sledding at points early in his tenure with the team. Staying on the same page with Baalke during that sledding will be essential to the working relationship being a positive one for both men.

Jaguars hire Ryan Paganetti as director of coaching analytics

Posted by Josh Alper on February 25, 2022, 3:38 PM EST

A member of Doug Pederson‘s coaching staff with the Eagles will be joining him in Jacksonville.

Seth Walder of ESPN reports that Paganetti will be joining the Jaguars as their director of coaching analytics. He was most recently an assistant linebackers and game management coach under Pederson with the Eagles.

Paganetti joined the Eagles as an analyst in 2015 and worked with Pederson on making decisions about things like two-point conversions and going for it on fourth down in his game management role. Pederson’s success in those situations helped the Eagles to a Super Bowl title before he was dismissed at the end of the 2020 season.

Paganetti’s brother T.J. was also an Eagles assistant under Pederson and he remained on the team’s staff as an offensive quality control coach under Nick Sirianni.

Report: Jaguars putting search for executive VP on hold

Posted by Myles Simmons on March 1, 2022, 11:27 AM EST

After the Jaguars hired Doug Pederson to be their head coach, Jacksonville planned to hire an executive vice president to help run the team’s football operations along with General Manager Trent Baalke.
Former Vikings G.M. Rick Spielman even interviewed for the role and was presumably the frontrunner for the job.

But now, the Jaguars have changed their plans.

Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Jaguars owner Shad Khan is putting the search for an executive VP on hold. According to the report, Khan doesn’t want to impede the significant progress made under Pederson with a new voice after the coaching and planning meetings of the last two weeks.

Rapoport adds that Jacksonville would still like to hire an assistant General Manager under Baalke and may still hire other personnel jobs.

Before the Jaguars hired Pederson, word was that Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich was close to landing Jacksonville’s head coaching job. But one significant area of contention was whether Baalke would remain the G.M. or if the Jags would instead hire Cardinals executive Adrian Wilson to take over the role.

PFT also reported that there were multiple candidates who declined an interview with Jacksonville and Baakle’s presence was a significant part of why that was the case.

But at least for now, Khan is opting to go with Pederson and Baalke to lead the Jaguars’ football operation.

Jaguars exercised DE Josh Allen's fifth-year team option for 2023.

The "other" Josh Allen has 20.5 sacks through three seasons after being taken with the No. 7 overall selection of the 2019 Draft. He is coming off his strongest overall campaign. Allen is a rare unambiguously good first-round pick from the Jags even if he is not quite yet a true star. Still only 25 in July, Allen is headed into his prime.

The Florida Times-Union's John Reid writes that Jaguars RB James Robinson (Achilles) is "not likely to be ready for next month's training camp."

It was written in part of a roundtable of Jaguars writers, and it didn't exactly go challenged by the other couple of writers in the piece. Robinson had resumed running in early June, but that doesn't exactly mean that he's a lock to be ready for the start of the season. Travis Etienne's stock will continue to climb until Robinson plays. At this point, Robinson may be a candidate to start camp on the PUP list.
