Hasn't he been a good runner since drafted? This was a pleasant surprise. Hopefully he has a better go of it than the other enduro lad which our culture and club ruined him

Yup I believe soHasn't he been a good runner since drafted?
What about if they haven't given him that feedback & he still did it?If the coaches have given him feedback that this upcoming season may be make or break for Jakob, then he is off to a good start by coming back in shape and winning the time trial.
That's good to see.
Just looked it up. He ran 6.16 at the draft combine, so expected really.Yup I believe so
In his first pre-season, he almost beat IQ in the yoyo test.
He looks a bit stronger now. Just needs to be injury free and start strong.
Yeah, I think his multiple injuries this year dating back to that concussion in 2023 stunted his confidence, everytime he got going, something would happen. But felt he was regaining some good in those final few vfl games.Just looked it up. He ran 6.16 at the draft combine, so expected really.
I really liked him early, seemed to lose confidence after the concussion, but got better by the end of the year.
One or two of Allan, HDM, Ryan, Parker, Smit, Steene, coming through would be great. I think Jiath will need time still to build up core strength.Yeah, I think his multiple injuries this year dating back to that concussion in 2023 stunted his confidence, everytime he got going, something would happen. Hopefully he can get a good run at it this pre-season and take the next step forward.
Yeah I think Jiath is a couple years away, but the others hopefully can come on in the next 12-18 months especially given our retirees soonOne or two of Allan, HDM, Ryan, Parker, Smit, Steene, coming through would be great. I think Jiath will need time still to build up core strength.
Ash johnston plays and trains line a bloke who had a rub before a date..Won the 2km time trial
Needs a big year imo
A position change over summer might help
Yes, positions are tight.
But with the hard running capacity Ryan might be better served on a wing at VFL level in order to realise his full footballing potential
Still training down back from what I can see, But Id like to see a trial on the wing, but guess Harry is gunning for that position too.
Of course.Probably no surprise that this thread gets a spike in activity on day 2 of pre-season when he wins a 2km time trial against about eight other blokes.
I think we need to temper expectations until we see that he puts up a solid performance in one of the match sims early next year (preferably a scratch match against opposition, not the intraclub).
Everyone seems to get sucked into 2km results every year, or other largely irrelevant pre-season showings. I think the past two years there's been a collective frenzy over Fin and Reef during pre-season.
Can we try him as a defensive wingman (similar to Jarrod Berry)? Play a few lockdown roles on players like Gulden and see how he goes.
Just need to get some games into him regardless of position almost.

Precisely. To use a TdF analogy, you can't win it in the first week, but you can certainly lose it. It's infinitely better to start the season in good shape than like a sack of buttered potatoes!Of course.
But it's nice to see him start off well. Hopefully he can continue it through pre-season and take the next step. Hopefully gets a good run with injury and we can see some good continuity playing wise.
Hopefully Jakob Ryan has a similar trajectory to Nathan Murphy where after his 2nd and even 3rd year on the list I had absolutely zero expectations that he would make it as an AFL player, and then bam! Incredible improvement in a short span of time.
People tend to forget that Nathan Murphy played 2 AFL games in his first year on the list, but zero AFL games in years 2 and 3 on the list. He had basically done nothing of note until all of sudden, in 2022 he walks into the side as a full back out of nowhere, and we win 11 straight games with him in the side.
I'm bullish on Smit starting to build a good body of work in the VFL this year, perhaps getting exposure to senior footy and setting him up for senior opportunities in 2026. I think he's got the tools to be a good ruck forward. Fingers crossed! One or two of Allan, HDM, Ryan, Parker, Smit, Steene, coming through would be great. I think Jiath will need time still to build up core strength.
That's ridiculous. Murphy looked almost nothing but awkward in those early years and was a man without a position, not having the running capacity for the wing or the forward craft to play forward. All the traits that were in Murphy’s repertoire were on display even in his first few years. Desperation, reading the play, good skills, ridiculous bravery. Not seeing that in Ryan.

You're looking back with the power of hindsight and seeing things that were not obvious at the time.
