The five mid-sized playmakers taken ahead of James Aish - Josh Kelly, Jack Billings, Marcus Bontompelli, Matthew Sharenberg and Kade Kolodjashnij - would want to be good. In two appearances Aish has shown he is all class in the middle. He has poise, awareness and more importantly the time to execute his skills.

Claye Beams returns after a knee reconstruction wiped out his 2013, while the club's past two first-round picks (South Australians Sam Mayes and James Aish) will also see plenty of game time.

Moloney had plenty of praise for both, saying they weren't just the "outside" players that many may have thought.

He said Aish was like a "sponge", always asking questions and absorbing more information.

"He'll play bits inside, he'll play bits on the wing. He's very clean inside. Everyone keeps saying he's an outside player, but I can see him being both."

Midfielder James Aish caused excitement when the Lions picked him up with their first 2013 draft selection.

The 18-year-old has been working closely with club legend and assistant coach Simon Black in pre-season.

"A Brownlow (medal) would be nice," the captain joked.

"You want him to contribute in a way and be able to buy in to the game plan.

"That's all it is in your first couple of years, being able to get your role done and let the more experienced players worry about the structures and the game plans."

Brisbane Lions look to extend James Aish contract before he plays a game

Brisbane general manager of football operations Dean Warren said Aish was an “outstanding young man” who had impressed club officials on and off the field over summer.

Warren said the club was not putting any pressure on Aish to sign and had just “let it be known” to his management that Brisbane were keen to lock in his services for at least another year.

Stopped reading after I saw Brisbane for the spoon.
Yeah that first one would be because Holmesby is a big Saints fan. No room on the bottom for anyone's team.

Will be between Aish and Martin for the rising star. Just depends on how much impact each can have on their teams. Aish I think is more ready for senior footy, and might a but more consistent, but Martin has that x factor. Should be interesting to see how both go.

Martin dislocated shoulder pretty much rules him out of rising star this year.

Aish will have to play very well to get the nomination ahead of Jonathan Patton for this week.
