Hardly anyone has 'lived experience' given most of the horrors that happened occurred more than a century ago give or take some exceptions.
I'll pass on the brain-washing training thanks.
**** right off. I had a foster brother, born in the 70s. His elder brother was stolen from his mother a few years earlier, she ‘gave him up’ because she thought they were coming for him anyway. So technically not part of the stolen generations but stolen nonetheless. He later returned to his community but was always stuck between two cultures, never quite fitting in. Took his own life at a sadly young age. Don’t try to pretend the horrors are ancient history and not part of people’s lives right now.

He was asked, because he was not using the flags. The issue began with his actions, not a question.

If you had lived experience of the horrors that First Peoples were subjected to, you'd understand the importance. Educate yourself and do some cultural capability training.

Were being the key word here..

These things all happened over a century ago with some exceptions up until the 1970s which basically is half a century ago now.

The “aboriginals should just get over what happened in the past” argument has always struck me as silly given we are told to worship a date from 237 years ago when the people of that time period are long dead from smallpox or typhoid fever.

Also being told “lest we forget” the actions of some guys running up some sand dunes in Turkey 110 years ago and they’re all long dead and buried by now.

So what is it? “Lest we forget” or “just forget about it”?

I never said they weren't - only that they happened a long time ago give or take some exceptions.

Nobody is using that argument. You are projecting again.

So, what, people in their 50s should have gotten over being stolen? The children of these people, who would have suffered greatly and not been able to raise their children in the way we all hope we could, should have pulled themselves up by their bootstraps by now?

I’m not Aboriginal and I’ve felt the effects of our history. And I wouldn’t even pretend to grasp the effects it would have on Aboriginal people. Dig deep and see if you can locate an ounce of empathy for other human beings who have been so poorly treated in such recent history.

Patriotism is the conviction that you country is superior to other countries because you were born in it.

It’s odd to be ‘proud’ of your country, as if you were somehow responsible for it. I’m pleased to live in a relatively safe and secure country, I feel fortunate to have the life I have, but I also recognise that it’s not the same for everyone and we should always strive to be better. Anything else seems silly.

So what was your point in mentioning it? Canada didn't really have a official national flag before 1965.

Canada had the red ensign (Union Jack in the corner) as the de facto flag, recognised as the flag of Canada.

Exactly the same as the Union Jack which, believe it or not, is not officially in UK law as their official national flag.

So not only do we have another nation’s flag as our national flag that flag isn’t even the official flag of that nation!

Just get rid of that crap and get an Aussie flag please

British colony chooses not to use British Ensign flag. World doesn't end.

Well yes. Canada didn't have an existing official national flag though. So it was relatively easy to adopt one for the first time in 1965. Australia's national flag was officially recognised through legislation in 1954.

Solomon Islands, Jamaica, Papua New Guinea, The Bahamas, Belize, Granada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines also have flags that aren't based on a British ensign flag.

So many wonderful examples for coming up with our very own flag here
