41% of all Australians and 53% of Australians between 18 and 34 (you know - the generation that’s about to start calling the shots) is a significant minority. Dismissiveness may bite you on the bum.
Link please? The SMH survey says 62% of all Australians prefer 26 January as Australia Day and 15% are undecided

There seems to have been a massive amount of people jump on this thread today who didn’t post before loudly proclaiming they are proud to celebrate Australia Day and f**k anyone who doesn’t.

Strange because you should be all out having fun and not worrying about “leftie scum” right?
Probably best you stay inside least you see an Australian flag and have Cronulla riot flashbacks.

There is no way the public would be convinced a day would somehow become significant over time with no particular reason or meaning behind it. Fantasy stuff.
Yeah good on ya, I am trying to make some positive suggestions, what have you got?
I go back to my original post and suggest a date could be chosen by indigenous people. I doubt most people care that much about what day it is, probably just people don't like being told they need to change it.

There are all these dates as suggested

A rememberence of sacrifice for those served and those who still do including... wait for it INDIGENOUS soldiers.

Jan 26th no Indigenous died on this day, in fact the first deaths were 2 white convicts working the land speared by the local tribe.

Do we say sorry we stole you from your homelands, families and forced you into working a harsh dry foreign often rocky country side only for you to survive scurvey and a long boat trip in piss and ahit to then be speared to death?

Paradox indeed.

Indigenous have plenty of days of mourning to choose from as well as to celebrate :

13 February – Anniversary of National Apology Day

On 13 February 2008, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd delivered the National Apology to Australia's Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples for the injustices of past government policies, particularly to the Stolen Generations.

20 March – National Close the Gap Day

National Close the Gap Day, observed on the third Thursday in March, raises awareness and seeks to close the gap with respect to life expectancy, child mortality, educational and employment outcomes between Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and non-Indigenous Australians.

26 May – National Sorry Day

National Sorry Day provides an opportunity for people to come together and share the journey towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities.

27 May – 1967 Referendum

The 1967 Referendum was a landmark achievement following decades of activism by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous people, where more than 90 percent of Australians voted in favour of amending two sections of the Australian Constitution.

27 May to 3 June – National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week celebrations commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey-the anniversaries of the successful 1967 Referendum and the High Court Mabo Decision.

3 June – Mabo Day
On 3 June 1992, the High Court of Australia overturned the principle of "terra nullius" or "nobody's land" as claimed by the British when they first arrived in this country. The decision has paved the way for Native Title legislation.

1 July – Coming of the Light
The Coming of the Light is celebrated annually by Torres Strait Islander peoples. It marks the adoption of Christianity through island communities during the late nineteenth century.

7 July to 14 July – NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia to celebrate history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

4 August – National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day
National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about the crucial impact that community, culture and family play in the life of every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child.

9 August – International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples
On this day, people from around the world are encouraged to spread the United Nation's message on the protection and promotion of the rights of Indigenous peoples.

4 September – Indigenous Literacy Day
Indigenous Literacy Day is a national celebration of culture, stories, language and literacy. This day raises awareness of the disadvantages experienced in remote communities and advocates for more access to literacy resources.

13 September – Anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People
The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) was adopted by the General Assembly on Thursday, 13 September 2007.

Some of us have worked commitments or travel commitments for work...
some are having a quick look and post... literally takes 1 minute.

Unfortunately I am stuck in an airport getting sent videos and pictures but hey still a great day to be alive...celebrate our country and people who made it as it is.

Lol the funniest part of it all is the Nationalist Socialist Party aka Nazi party was based on left authoritarian socialism.

Hitler was a leftist. Have a look at the evidence the communist propaganda post war tried it best to disassociate him with it and said he aligned with Western society values and the then Marxist in the west bought in and taught in unis. Revised history, lol funny fair bit of that going around Australia atm too.

Like Stalin, the Kim dynasty, and the CCP, the Nazis just pretended to be socialist to gain and consolidate power and then reverted to dictatorships with little pretence of working for the people.

They don't reflect socialist ideals and in many cases are the opposite of socialism

Well don't!

No one's forcing you.

But enough with trying to force your CHANGES on the majority.

Go out and enjoy the day or wallow and self flagellate on your own, dont drag the reat down while you drown in your own tears...Get it?
Does putting “majority” in caps make it a bigger majority does it?

The really dumb thing about your posts is that you’ve yet to grasp that people like me do love Australia Day.

It’s clear it’s really important to you that no-one chooses to mark Australia Day differently to how you do.

Gee now what sort of political system does that sound like.

What have I got? I don't have any suggestions for a feasible and meaningful change of date because I don't believe there are any. It's probably a reason why the date hasn't changed yet.

This is my opinion:

1. I am an Aboriginal person. This of course doesn't make me any better or worse than anyone here, we are all equal.

2. We need to have an Australia Day, its important we come together as a country and as a community and celebrate what makes Australia great. However, in my opinion, have Australia Day on another date. Have Australia Day on the second last Friday of January each year. However, if the second last Friday lands on 26 January (example - year 2029) then move Australia Day to the next available week day, in 2029's case it would be on Monday 29 January. That way the 26 January is completely avoided and ruled out. We also get to have Australia Day every year.

3. I understand that some (maybe all people) on this forum may disagree with me, and that's fine, I get it and I understand. We aren't all going to agree, we aren't all going to sing from the same song sheet. I just thought I'd have my opinion on this matter, because I am entitled to have an opinion, just like the rest of us are entitled to have an opinion. We are all allowed to have our say/opinion. Thats the only fair and reasonable way.

Whatever you choose to do today, be nice to each other and the broader community and treat everyone with respect. Plus, stay safe too.

Cheers.

Good to hear from you, nice post. Do you think maybe moving it a bit further from the 26th Jan would be a good plan?

Would you be in favour of changing it if there was a meaningful date for it?

Didn't think I'd see someone taking a race riot and playing it for laughs, but that just goes to show how disgusting some people are.

The underlying sentiment that sparked the Cronulla riots is still prevalent in some sections of Australian society, they just need an excuse to set off and a leader/the media to give them cover

Oh but one to add to the collection of “ridiculous shit that has come out of the mouths of Liberal MPs on January 26th”

She joins Michaelia Cash and Bridget McKenzie in the nonsense stakes, I think Ley might actually win the prize for dumbest take.

Opposition deputy leader Sussan Ley has given an Australia Day speech in Albury comparing the First Fleet to Elon Musk’s dream of building a colony on Mars.

“All those years ago, those ships did not arrive, as some would have you believe, as invaders. They did not come to destroy or to pillage,” she said at an address in St Matthew’s Anglican Church in the border city in her electorate of Farrer.

“In what could be compared to Elon Musk’s SpaceX’s efforts to build a new colony on Mars, men in boats arrived on the edge of the known world to embark on that new experiment. A new experiment and a new society.

I don’t think the majority at the rallies are mask wearers.

We have a poster here who said they were going to go to a rally today, hopefully they report back first hand wasn’t really went on.
I went to a rally today. Very few wearing masks, and I assume those who did were either sick or immunocompromised.

I didn't think everything being said in the speeches at the rally was going to win people to the cause of supporting First Nations peoples' demands if they were on the fence previously. I could see why some would turn away from that. But I also recognised that the words were coming from a place of pain and trauma over cultural destruction and racism, so I chose not to fuss about the wording and listen to the broader point instead.

Neo Nazis in Adelaide were arrested trying to disrupt the Invasion Day rally with a banner labelled “Mass Deportations Now”

Neo Nazis are abhorrent, its a pity they have hijacked the Australian flag. Neo Nazis and left wing nutters, they're all out and about today.
I wonder what they did to get arrested - holding up a banner that reads “Mass Deportations Now” is no worse than brandishing a Hamas flag.
