We both did! Shit. I got home last night. Flew out of Tokyo the night before it dumped. Apparently a man died in Nagano too near the train station, I got the bullet train to there. Heavy days. I still had an awesome time though!

Crazy Snow. On Friday when we got to Hiroshima it was cloudy and cold but about 1pm it started snowing a little but within 20 mins it was 20 meteres visibility. We hightailed it to the train and got out of there.Gotta say, I'm not a massive fan of snow.

We got a solid foot in Nozawa which was great for snowboarding. It was similar there too, at the top of the mountain you couldn't see a thing and my goggles were frozen. It was -25 or something. Lucky you got the train in time. I take it you don't snowboard/ski?

nope. Only experienced snow a few times, and this time in Japan has confirmed my love for sand.;). Have mates that do but I've never been that interested. I like watching the Winter Olympics, but not for me. It still amazes me how quickly it go from clear to a few inches.

Fair enough. If you get a nice day when it's not snowing but there is snow on the ground it's great. The Winter Olympics are awesome. To be honest I prefer snowboarding to surfing, more enjoyable and probably slightly safer.

Hey all, I am in Tokyo right now - wanna catch the Hawks vs GC game hopefully at a bar somewhere. Does anyone know any bars in maybe Roppongi that might show AFL? First time in years Hawks come up to QLD and i'm out of the bloody country!

I went to the Tokyo Sports Bar in Roppongi when I was over there a few months back...not sure if they have AFL.

Went to Nagoya to watch the Dragons v Giants one year. Bored me senseless. Actually don't mind sitting at the inlaws watching it whilst knocking back cans though. Bought our tickets from Family Mart from memory. I also recall scalpers being everywhere.

Head to Hobgoblin in Roppongi, it's where the Goannas are on weekends to watch the games.

I was posted to Yokohama (part of the Greater Tokyo conurbation) for just under 4 years, back in the early years of this century, living in Kannai near the baseball stadium there (caught a few games, but not really into baseball). I can recommend a nice day-trip return train ride from Yokohama down the Izu Peninsula to Shimoda, which is the place where Commodore Matthew Perry of the U.S. Navy arrived with his "black ships" in 1853, leading to the signing of the Convention of Kanagawa, which effectively ended Japan's 200-year era of isolation from the outside world. You can de-train at various little villages en-route, a number of which have natural hot springs in which you can luxuriate - sometimes nude as is the Japanese custom. I was in Shimoda once when they celebrated the arrival of the Black Fleet, with a parade of Japanese in traditional garb, followed by a detail, and band, from the US Navy, probably from Yokasuka, just south of Yoko, where the US Navy has a base.

You can also drive there along the coast, which imo is one of the great coastal drives (and I have done a few).

Another pleasant day trip is the ferry from Kurihama, on the Yokohama side, to Kanaya, across Tokyo Bay. Kanaya is on the Bozo Peninsula (I mean, hey, I was just a bozo day tripping), and then you can catch a local train further south, and return. If you are into 1930-style old trains, the Bozo Peninsula trains are for you (and me).

At a street level, Japanese is quite easy to pick up, if you go about it like a child learns a language - just focus on words and phrases for different activities (e.g. supermarket; restaurant; transport; shopping, etc), and you go from there. The internet has aural pronunciations for Japanese words you see in Latin script, which is a great help, and the Japanese enunciate very clearly. The grammar, for getting by in street Japanese, is not difficult (unlike Arabic, which fried my brain, grammar-wise, but that is another story).

actually, has anyone here been to hong Kong? Going there 26th AUG and want to catch the Swans Richmond game. Any Aussie bars there?

any of the bars in Wanchai or Lan Kwai Fong will have it on if there isn't any major event clashing with it.

Try Delaneys or the Dog House in Wanchai, or Bulldogs or Stormies in Lan Kwai Fong

Always wanted to go to Japan... Now might be the time.
