News Jarrad Schofield departs for West Coast

Anyone decent will be pinched by other clubs. It's no accident Nathen Bassett seems to have bedded himself down at Port Adelaide as Hinkley's right hand man. The two are all in on this and virtually joined at the hip. Bassett is still here because no one else wants him. If they did he'd be gone by now too.

TBF Adelaide did put an offer out to him

Is it the fact Schofield is a former premiership player that people have gone easy on him? People here ripped the **** out of Voss for years when he was in charge of what was considered an under performing midfield. We ripped into Lade when our forward line under performed under his watch. People still rip into Bassett. And here we are, watching our midfield get slaughtered in big games/against good opposition and Schofield gets a free pass for it. Why?

Baffling.

Bloody hell, we're not Centrelink, we're not his wage safety net. Our forward lines is a shambles and has been for years.

It’s not about giving him a free pass, it’s about recognising this has been a consistent theme for the entire time Hinkley has been senior coach.

It’s obvious the problem is bigger than the midfield coach and there’s only so much the midfield coach can do with both hands tied behind their back and a pig headed senior coach who doesn’t work well with others.

What’s Schofield, the 4th or 5th midfield coach under Hinkley and we are still plagued by the same issues.

I believe Schofield gets the free pass because everyone believes he's limited by Hinkley, and has to fight tooth and nail to get anything he wants over Ken. People look back at Schofield's success in the WAFL, and decide that the reason his charges are failing is because of "outside" interference. If Ken would just **** off and leave Jarrad alone, he'd set up our midfield to be successful.

The big factor in this thinking being that Schofield's appointment to midfield coach also coincided with Travis Boak's return to the midfield.

Its just the same as when we have some good coaching occur. Its always because one of the assistants managed to yell louder than Ken, and get something done inspite of Ken's wishes.

Bad things = Ken's fault.
Good things = assistants ideas.

When the reality is, we have no idea who is the driving force behind each decision.

Also Sack Hinkley.

Collingwood emptied out their coaches box and have brought in McRae, Leppitsch and Bolton and their supporters are up and about again.

I don't think I would be as disappointed in Schofield leaving if it was as a result of a comprehensive review into the coaches. But it's clear there are members of the panel that are untouchable, beyond criticism, while everyone around them is fair game. That's a toxic culture, creative of mediocrity, with no exit in sight.

Seems everyone is in love with Schofield and view him as the saviour as he won some state league GFs.

Instead of chasing proven and successful coaches at AFL level, success at state level is seen as the best we could want.

As I said earlier in the week, it’s an absolute disgrace that over our whole coaching board, we have 1 coach who has been involved in a team on GF day at AFL level in the past 12 years (Montgomery). This is why he’s seen as some kind of saviour for us, as our expectations are so low based on what else we currently have.

Just have too look how low our coaching bar is set (by finals I mean just season reached finals not finals played);

Cornes: 13-15 GWS - 0 finals
Bassett: 13-15 Ess - 1 final
Montgomery: 08-10 Carl - 2 finals; 11-18 Bulldogs - 2 finals and 1 GF (premiership)
Hentschel: No other experience
Voss: 09-13 - 1 final

So out of all our assistant coaching ranks, they came too port with 21 years coaching experience from other AFL environments for a combined total of only 6 finals series experience and 1 GF day and premiership

Then along comes Schofield having won multiple state league GFs and when compared to the above non-success, he’s the messiah and is destined for greatness post Hinkley.

When in reality, our midfield has certainly gone backwards particularly this year. Who knows how much of that is Hinkley V Schofield but can only judge on the results.

In saying that, I would have preferred too keep him still as we have bigger issues with our forward and defensive lines.

There are three certainties moving forward.

Hinks won’t win us a flag.

and

We will be up and about when he leaves.

… lastly, they will carry on in 2022 as a last roll of the dice - curtains after that.

Signing a two year contract extension not long ago and then suddenly doing an about face and leaving was bound to raise eyebrows.
He signed the contract before he was offered the job at Wet Toast. Are we saying that had he not been offered a promotion at WC that he would have left anyway? Coaches all year have been talking about cost cutting in the AFL and how hard it's making it for them. Covid has meant longer hours for less money. We've said the same for Voss, if you get offered a promotion with more cash take it. He has.

Why are people talking like this was our decision?

Clearly the club wanted him as we gave him a 1 year extension 2 months ago.
It was his decision to leave for a better opportunity.
It’s got nothing to do with a clean out.

I think Boaky's renaissance, Amon's turn around from list clogger to first choice midfielder, and Ollie going from good to brownlow-level all happening while Schofield was here really points to his ability to get the best out of the players. Also though we know what Ken's like, we've had 9 years of the same shit. We all remember 2015-2019 and we don't want that to happen again.

This whole "I cant believe what he said/did" is so played on this board.
I'm gonna keep doing it every time someone makes a post giving next to no info on what they are actually talking about.

Because the actual advance statistics back up the fact that Port don't have many elite (ie 1) or above average players (ie 1) going through the midfield.
