Hasn't that always been the truth:p

Actually as a ruck man, I do prefer Witt's, but as a ruck/forward I think Grundy is the man, or at least thats how I hope they develop in the next few years.

I think Grundy and Witts at the Moment are about the same as Ruckman but I think Grundy Competes better then Witts in Ruck Contests. With his Multiple Efforts after the Ruck Contest and he is Top 5 in the League for Ruckman in Clearnces.

Though out of Grundy and Witts, Grundy has the Better Chance of Being a Forward. Just Moves Better and not slow like Witts

Did really well early in the game but was worn down by a bigger more mature body the longer the game went on.

How good was that massive 60mtr pass that hit Cloke laces out.
The1 pAss was all he did all night ,209cm and cost us the game he has no mungral in him .. Sandi smashed Witts like he was playing online a midget ..

Witts is a super star he smashed Sandilands easerly ..,need to rest Grundy for the rest of the year to get Grundy and Reid right for next year ..

Witts is a smart footballer when he has the ball and wants to dispose of it. I feel he is better than Grundy at that particular aspect of the game.

But I feel he is dumb without the footy in his positioning around the ground. He never runs to the best positions and he is hardly ever in the correct spot to take a mark. Also despite him having a 'reputation as being aggressive' unless he is on his knees in a clearance tackling someone most of the time he is a bit of a pussy. Im not saying he lacks courage but rather that he lacks aggression (most of the time). He is capable of being aggressive but for whatever reason rarely uses it. Thats why Bucks got stuck into him that time to rev him up (and Bucks was correct to do so).

He has a lot of potential if he puts it all together but he has a lot to work on before I'd call him a very good player.

I agree with your points, i just think that hes still young and we have a lot to be confident about.

The thing is at that size it is very hard to be an aggressive tackler without giving away free kicks.
I think the issue about positioning also includes the difficulty with lateral movement when you're that big. You cant correct your run or turn your man easily, so more than most other players you have to make your decisions early and get to the right spots... Not easy for a position that doesnt have the best reputation for "football IQ".

I'm a west aussie and have a brother who's a Dockers member. I have seen plenty of Sandilands over the years, and i have confidence in Witts being able to be at least 90% the player Sandi is.

For most of his career Sandi was being bemoaned by Freo fans because he was great tap ruckman but struggled everywhere else around the field. Then he slowly started getting into the right positions in attack and defence, then he slowly built the ability to take the marks when they come to him and then developed a semi-reliable kick. None of that happened overnight, it happened through years of development and years of criticism at those elements of his game... And a lot of it is probably just through maturity and experience. (and lets be honest, none of those individual attributes would be considered anywhere close to elite, but he does them well enough that, given his size, he will more often than not have much more impact on the game than his opponent.)

I think Witts is going to surprise a few. I'm in the minority here but I rate his selling ahead of Grundy (nothing against Grundy). I see him being really dominant in the future. People forget that he was in batter form the Grundy in 2014 and arguably for a period mid 2015, he had a few setbacks this year, but I have high hopes for him. I could be wrong but I still think him and Grundy can play together.

Love ya Wittsy, can't wait for you to become a 200 game, one club, multi premiership player.

Everyone at Collingwood can take a leaf out of his book, great attitude, great clubman, great to have around.

Good on you big fella. I was one pushing for the club to look at trading him this year as I thought he would have some currency with clubs chasing rucks but good on him for standing his ground and wanting to make the position his in the years to come.

I think he will have his work cut out for him taking the #1 ruck mantle from Grundy but he obviously loves the club (as he said) and I only wish him luck from here if he continues to work hard.

Witts and Grundy
The new deal (with apologies to Franklin Roosevelt)

Let the rucks begin.

And the big cox as a back up - how can we go wrong

Not a lot said in the video really. Only that he wanted to stay, and that he was able to hit the weights better and harder this preseason.
I hope he and Grundy can play in the same team effectively.
Wouldn't be surprised if he pulls a Bradshaw and pisses of somewhere else, a club of his own choosing, next year though.

Nah, doesn't seem like a Bradshaw scenario at all to me. If he was bitter about it he could have just put himself on the market this year. The club wouldn't have stopped him imo, as it would have meant that they could have traded back in to the first round.

I reckon he genuinely want to be at the Pies long term.

People need to remember that Grundy comes from an Aussies rules background when Witts was for most of his junior career a Rugby player. He was playing his third game of Aussie rules when he was spotted him in the weak western Sydney junior comp and picked him as a nsw academy player. He is a project player that has a huge upside and potential to him.

I think Witts at his best offers a bit more than Grundy, but at the moment Grundy is ahead of him in terms of development and consistency. The trick of having them work together in the same team is to improve the mobility of both players and to improve their marking in the forward line. If they do that there's a place for both in the same team. Unfortunately with fewer interchanges in 2016 there won't be anywhere to hide on a football field, especially for slow, unfit players who aren't prepared to run and cover space.

Grundy probably had an earlier grounding in the game, but he was essentially a basketballer until he was about 16, which is when he genuinely started to take footy seriously. If you want to go down that path, both had a delayed start to their development as football players.

Good on you, Wittsy.

Despite the talk about him being 'excess to requirements' in certain sections of the media, i liked bits of what i've seen from the big fella in 2014, and i liked his keeness to stick to his guns at Collingwood even more.

With a strong preseason and healthy body, he can hopefully become more agile, mobile and be that contested mark/marking option that is so key in today's ruck. He has a good kick on him too, better than quite a few other tall blokes.
