Yes he tapped well but he had no presence around the ground whatsoever. Teams cannot afford to carry a ruckman that offers nothing else. He was outmarked by both Josh Kelly and Dylan Shiel this afternoon. He had six disposals (3 kicks & 3 HBs) for 50% efficiency. Mumford has a presence around the ground until he went off.
He nullified mummys presence. Bodied him in marking contests and stopped him from dominating the game like he has been doing all year. Witts was all over him

What would Essendon/Carlton give to have a ruckman like Witts and here some people are looking to find fault. LOL

If Essendon had Witts, they'd be playing him in the VFL for all eternity. They have a very capable backup ruckman in Giles and they send Daniher and Carlisle to the centre bounces. Makes you shake your head in disbelief. Hird even had the gall to complain that he didn't have any real ruckman in the team.

Well,, Hird that is another story, like 'who said he can coach?'

I was worried at the start of the game with Grundy out and coming up against the big Mummy, however Wittsy rucked the best I have seen him. We were able to get first use of the ball. With him and Grundy I am just ticking off each game they play. I am always looking at the big picture with these 2 guys. We will continue to see the good and the bad but on days like today it was the good ruck work and not so good play around the ground. The reality is that they are both on 32 games. I look forward to when they are on 82 games.

Great also to finally have depth at the Ruck Postion:eek:

If we did what some on here think we should do, it would be Carlton and Sam Jacobs all over again. And when Sydney put Mumford on the table for trade, a lot on here and other boards said NO WAY, TOO SLOW. I am just glad that Collingwood is not run by the fans. Plenty of sides play with two ruckman, and they do well. Hale and McEvoy won a flag last year and they were not much chop. Hale got 10 taps and only 7 possessions, McEvoy got 14 taps and 15 possessions. 8 marks between them yes, but no where near 37 taps against the one of, if not THE best ruck this year.

Gotta admit, I feel for Giles. He requested to be traded to Essendon on the promise he would be given more opportunity than he would at GWS with Mumford, and instead of playing him they use Carlisle? Wtf?

It boggles the mind, given Giles did a really good job at GWS before Mumford came along...

For those who have been suggesting (on other threads) that we trade Witts... I'm still not sure what your plans would be in a situation like that which is current, wherein Grundy is unable to play! Pretty big hole in the old "trade Witts" plan I think!

Need to keep both.

Spot On IF we did not have Witts as Back-Up we would of Really Struggled against Mumford with Gault(Though was Injured) or Cox

Witts was comprehensively beaten in a number of marking contests against Mummy. His tap work was good though and our centre clearances improved. Overall he did quite well but still has a lot to work on.

I thought it saw that Mumford took two marks for the day. IMO, that's not comprehensively beaten.

But yes, not taking a mark himself is not good.

Still, people calling for him to be traded mustn't remember Collingwood's rucks prior to Jolly.

There were a couple of contested marking contests in the first half in which Witts was pretty poor. I didn't notice too many marking situations in the second half. Perhaps Witt's teammates avoided kicking it to him. It is definitely an area for improvement.

To be honest, I thought he was pretty good in this area last year. I saw him at VFL and I'm certain he kicked a few goals from marks last year. I was sure it was Grundy who was not taking the marks around the ground last year.

Certainly not suggesting that he can't do it. Just didn't do it today. His ruck work was very good though and he gave first use to our mids on a number of occasions.

A 22 year old ruckman getting out-marked by a 28 year old premiership veteran and potential 2015 AA ruckman....

Who would have thought, ey.

Was the circumstance in which he was outmarked (I'm thinking of that play early in the game where Witts let an outbalanced Mumford casually pluck the ball out of thin air rather than use his body and positioning to take an easy grab).

It's the one glaring downside of the game which I'm sure the club will be emphatically trying to improve over the coming years. Has to become a reliable link around the ground ala Sandilands.

Yeah he was feeding Swannie like a mumma bird with a worm in Q3. Witta's always been a lumbering type, I can't see him getting to be more mobile for another 2-3 years with a body like his. Happy for him to take throw-ins and run defensively, or just to park his arse in goalsquare until then. Let Grundy be the wildebeest.
